Tell us about the kids!
This is great stuff. We'd all like to know more about how all of the kids are handling this adventure (if they are all half as excited as Heather has sounded in her emails home, then you adults have had your hands full.) Anecdotes about any of the Walden kids would be much appreciated. And please guilt Erinn into contacting us and giving us an update!!

SIGH...
It is much too quiet at Walden - even for me! Someone facetiously commented during the year that we could run a really great school if it weren't for the kids getting in the way, but after this week I seriously disagree. I can't tell you how much I miss everyone! And look at your adventures of forest, cave, volcano, coffee plantations (Eric, did you remember your promise to me?) monkeys, drunk drivers and hilly dirt roads. What a great experience, and I am just, plainly, too jealous! Wash DC kids doing great and enjoying their trip. I haven't heard from San Fran for a couple days, so assuming no new is good news. Kids here are doing well too. Geode hunting today, and swimming tomorrow. My love to all.

Can you tell I'm checking every hour for updates? Sorry to hear that Alex is sick--hope he feels better soon and that others don't succumb. Thanks, Diana, for the grant info. My children--your mother's heart is breaking in your absence. XO to all of you!

What fun!
Keep up the great journal entries, Diana and Eric-- I'm sure that everyone loves reading them as much as me!! I sure wish I were there, and hope everyone who isn't feeling well gets better quick! Good luck tomorrow in chimaltanango (sp?) with the performance-- Make Kenzie do both her dances-- she has two and she probably will need to be coaxed to do just one! I have been e-mailing you Kenz, hope you have recieved them!! Love you all---Jennifer

glad you're back online
Hi--this sounds terrific. It's very, very dull here by comparison. I love keeping up with you guys vicariously!

I'm jealous
I suppose wandering around in my rather pregnant state wasn't an option, but I am still jealous of your adventure. Sounds like things are going well. Things here are swimming along...already Tuesday! We miss all of you--school feels emaciated.

What's ALex up to?
Hey, Thanks for the blog. I really appreciate it. Just wondering how Alex is doing. I know noone wants to write, but it would be nice to hear how my boy is.

EXPERIENCE!
Love reading these blogs Eric - thanks. Wow, this takes me back a year! I soooooo wish I were with you. The cuisine sounds a little lackluster, though...How's Kat taking it? When you talk about "the kids", could you name them? I can picture Ingy bargaining with the vendors, and Diana hanging on for dear life in that bus, but it would be nice to hear who's where, etc. Thinking of you and praying for you all. Oh, and keep those kids away from the gallo! PS Ask Diana if she got my email about the property, I can't tell if she has read it or if it even went through. Thanks!

stringy yellow chicken
Is the stringy chicken as tasty as it sounds? The tortillas and homemade cheese sound good, though. Have you any more scary bus trips planned? It's ok, I've got my tranquilizers to get me thought the night. Ingrid said Tikal was amazing, and that she went on the zipline. That's amazing, too. Are the cloths all hand-woven? Is the pre-christian/catholic syncretism wide-spread? Thanks for posting again! I love hearing all the details!

Sounds like Mexico!
Glad to hear that everyone arrived safely! Please take note of all funny signs; I'd like to make a collection from all over the world. Is Cedar scared of the dogs? I hope not. Getting ready to leave for San Fran tomorrow. Wish us luck! Hope things are going well; tell Jenni and Kenzie hi for me.

As if you were having fun without me
Who was sick? Please take loads of pictures for me. And tell everyone 'hi' from me. Everything sounds wonderful over there; San Fran's gonna be way cooler. Ta, Mikele

Sounds like a grand adventure
Sounds like you're having fun. Maybe get some of the kids to chime in with their perspectives once in a while. I'd like to know what their culture shock sounds like...

Monkeys, tucans and lizard tails
Greetings from the crew that went to Tikal. The hostel in Guat City was perfect—lots of large spaces for kids to congregate, play cards, eat greasy pizza, etc. I was awakened at 6:30 by Alex screaming at the top of his lungs (cold shower). Dixon took group after group of students out to a bakery for fresh bread and pastries while we waited for breakfast, then we were off to the airport again (surprising how easy it was with 25 people). It was cool and raining when we left Guat City, but the heat and humidity hit hard as we deplaned in Flores. The jungle is beautiful, much drier than it was 6 years ago when I was here, and fewer animals it seems. There were Jaguar, turkey and snake crossing signs on the road here, but no sign of any of these. We did enjoy howler monkeys swinging from tree to tree and the odd, criket-like call of the tucan, but the Kuadamundis were scarce. Kat stepped on a baby lizard and detached its tail—the kids carried with them for the next 10 minutes or so as it wriggled, independant of a brain—yuk. We did watch a gazzillion leaf-cutter ants scurry up the vines spiraled around a tree trunk, then scurry back down carrying pieces of leaf about 10 times their size. They have a huge network of trails all across the jungle—it's rather amazing. This morning some of us are going on a canopy tour (pricey, but it's not every day we would have the opportunity). They'll harness us in and send us off on a sort-of zip line across the top of the jungle. Our guide is waiting patiently, so I'll check out for not and report in when we're back. Diana

Are we there yet?
Wow, this is exciting. I have sucked all the air out of my bags and I am ready to go. Is is possible to go native. This should be a lot of fun. The last minute worries were about whether the students needed notarized waivers from their parents. On the assurance from Mr. Bee, we were told ok. We look forward to an exciting and adventurous trip. Guatemala or quebrantado!!
