Greetings from Thunder Mountain! - From: Return of the Blog
Will! Got to looking at your blog today after talking about you to my officemate. She is thinking about traveling around Lithuania this summer (has a Lith. S.O. which may bring her to those parts). Saw your folks on Saturday and they said you are heading soon to Germany to see your new God-daughter! Nice. I am sure you will fall in love given the pics and video I have seen. Best to those folks there. Art and I did some work in the garden this weekend - it will be spring here before long. The projects around your homestead are coming along - it is looking good. Your mom was working hard on getting organized and I was able to catch the first half of the Davidson bball game with your Dad which was fun. All is well here and we will look forward to seeing you in September. Martha

'a place for you' - From: Return of the Blog
Hey, Bear! I so loved 'returning to your Blog!' and 'picturing your moments of moving from place to place (experience to experience), and your observations of how you 'meet the new, as you reference them to where you just were'. I don't think I'm expressing this as best as I would like, but it touched off something in me from my earlier years. (wow! that sounds 'old'!). I so remember watching my 'perceptions' and how they affected my experience in each new place/experience. I SO especially loved a book I carried around and read alot, and I think, internalized in my heart, called: A Place for You, by Paul Tournier. (he was/is? sort of a spiritual journeyman and psychiatrist or psychologist.) The book may be out of print now, and I think I lent my copy long ago. Anyway, the 'gist' was sort of about being on a spiritual journey and that we can 'search' and 'search' or 'journey' and the 'place is in our spirit, imbedded in us'....It's about how important each place, relationship, experience carves a space in us, a 'point of relativity' (those are my words to describe it) and that wherever we are, whenever we are, we come from/perceive from 'those places/experiences that we relate to'...anyway, YOU say it best! What a beautiful observation! I'll keep my eye out for that book! The other big point he made, was... that it wasn't the 'place' ...but rather the 'spirit' inside you that 'hosted the place/experience' (again my words/memory/ interpretation! Have fun with all your observations of your Life and All you encounter! Love, AnnMama!

I LIKE YOUR REVIEW - From: Port St John's, Transkei, and the Wild Coast
Dear Will, We did a trip last October to South Africa and I too had the same questions what do all these people do out here? The first part of the trip was to Kruger. From Kruger we went back to Joberg to fly to Durban and rented a car for the 4hr drive to Natal and along the way saw many walking on the road. Next we flew to Cape Town and rented a car- went to Knysna then to Hermanas. It looks like a great place but the crime that I read about seemed to go on everyday. My heart goes out to the wonderful people we met and like you I felt It was white dominated everywhere. When I got home I read Mandela's book and am always looking on blogs for what people see. Good job on your trip, Jim Masur Colorado

the stars in umtwalume - From: Work at Thanda Afterschool, Umtwalume, South Africa
Hi carolina!! Unfortunately, we do not live out in the village where we work. There are many reasons we do not live there, but the main is that there is no available housing. So......I don't know what the stars out there are like!! But here in Hibberdene, it is also a small town and so the stars are really beautifu. There is one in particular out over the Indian Ocean that is really bright, we think it is Mars but none of us are experts on stars so are not quite sure. The moon reflection on the water is quite remarkable.....

Small question! - From: Work at Thanda Afterschool, Umtwalume, South Africa
Hi!!! I have a question regarding the nights at Umtwalume. It is well known that in the big cities the pleasure of a clear sky and the rain of stars over your head is not easy to enjoy. That is something I miss a lot here in Japan. How would you describe the sky over there?

Openness:the hand shake - From: Work at Thanda Afterschool, Umtwalume, South Africa
I vaguely remember Dale Herman saying that the hand shake with the elbow touching ,showing respect, comes from earlier times of conflict . That to touch the other elbow/arm is to show you "have nothing up your sleeve" , i.e. no weapons concealed, and that you are trustworthy. It is definitely a sign of respect!! I wish I could hear the singing, it sends chills up and down my spine to hear the beauty of the singing. Might be an interesting way to exchange and share language: English and Zulu songs. When you return you can bring us the gift of Zulu songs, yes? Maybe you could share the Hymn of the Church of Reconciliation...hmmmm! Yes, the ball made of bread wrappings is typical...probably has a stone at the center of it, we made one during a Sunday school class one time. OK, I am off to the Farmers Market, hope all continues well!! Peace. Liz

what we wear without knowing it - From: Baseball on the Beaches of Normandy
Margot, That is really interesting. What a loaded t shirt in terms of messages. Baseball shirt in a place that does not play baseball. Interesting. It makes me think of my first baseball practice in Kaunas, Lithuania, where one of the other players showed up wearing a t shirt that said 'Tultex' on it. Tultex is the company started by my grandfather over 50 years ago, a knitting and sweatshirt company that went out of business almost 10 years ago. I was obviously shocked to find someone wearing one of their shirts in Lithuania(when in the US I rarely see them at all anymore). :)

This morning I was tutoring a high shcool girl from West Africa. SHe was choosing which verb to use in front of different sports: do, go or play. We tripled the number of sports mentioned in the book. I needed to explain cursorily how baseball is played and that it is the so-called national sport of the US. I give info about sport different sports I theoretically play and she guesses the sport. Then we trade roles. After all that I see on her T shirt brown and red bats as stripes and little baseballs as stars in the form of the US flag. She liked the shirt but didn't know what it was about.

Another act of kindness in Lithuania - From: Acts of Kindness
We were travelling through North Western Lithuania with our trusty Landies when one of them lost a wheel - flew right off (probably some undetected rust). Thankfully the car came to a stop and we were left to our own devices when out of nowhere came along a huge truck (I think it was with Russian plates, my wife thinks it was Lithuanian but we don't know which one was the driver) and the driver came out took a serious look at the car, brought his heavy duty jack out and started working on it. "No problem" apparently is a phrase that is understood worldwide. Within twenty minutes we were on our way, still too shocked even to notice that we haven't taken his name, number or anything to thank him except a hushed "thank you so much". So for this wonderful truck driver - THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH.

cheers to them - From: Acts of Kindness
reading this entry reminded me of the living saints i met during my travels through italy. in casale monferato, i met antonio, a bus driver with whom i caught a ride into the city one day. when i asked about return trips, he replied that there were none but that he would take me himself. i thought he would make the extra trip in his bus, but instead he came to pick me up in his own car. then, in ferrarra, i injured my back so badly that i couldn't walk or sit straight. i don't remember how i found her or she found me, but a healer named anna took me into her house, fed me, and massaged me with her miraculous hands. neither antonio nor anna asked for anything in return.

I can think of other things she may have meant such as, five seconds or five people per stall, or maybe use your hand or...good grief!! Makes me grateful to not be traveling to Costa Rica right now and having to carry my own TP wherever I go.

you should have an application made up - From: My First Blind Date
You need to sit dwn and make a detailed application for dating, and give it you your host mother. Tell her that if she is going to pimp you out than she need to have a standerd application process that girls must go through before they can be graced with your time. We miss you don't fall in love, and if you do make sure she is ok with comming back to the US MUCH LOVE Stay Black
