Vicky313 - Vicky Powell
Hi Everyone. As some of you already know I'm travelling to Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana West Africa for 3 weeks on May 12th, as an International Volunteer with CCS (Cross Cultural Solutions). I'm not sure what awaits me but I'm hoping to rise to the challenge of being thrown in the deep-end, and helping in some small way, the people of Ghana. I'm still awaiting details of my actual placement so I could end up anywhere! As the time approaches I am becoming more nervous about how I deal with whatever may be thrown at me, but then that is part of the challenge / adventure :o)
I am 41 years old, married with two children aged 18 and 11 and am currently working in an administrative role back here in England.
I hope with my 'blog'entries that I may help inspire some more of you 'would-be' volunteers to take the plunge and do something out of the ordinary, and life changing. Looking forward to all of your comments. x x

I've been home now for just over 24 hours and am wondering just that - was it all a dream? To take in all that has happened in 3 weeks is difficult. So much has been seen, experienced, felt, that there was little time to actually sit back and reflect on it all. I guess that will happen over the next few days, weeks or even months. I knew this day would come - but it's come so soon. My 3 weeks is almost at an end. It's definately not long enough, but it's all I was able to give realistically. To come away feeling as if you've made 'a difference' I think you do need longer. We went to our placements for the last time this morning as we have to leave for the airport at 1.30pm Friday 1st June. Well I said I'd fill you all in on the mountain climbling.............. We left the homebase at 6am for what the CCS described as a demanding hike up a local mountain. Now having completed the Inca Trail in Peru a couple of years back I felt this wouldn't be too much of a problem. The mountain is Adaklu which lies about 10km from the Homebase and its exact height is unknown but guessed at about 580m's - not too high I hear you all saying. Week 2 over and this volunteer work isn't half bad.....

I apologise in advance that this again will be a long entry. No internet access whilst visitng Accra and Cape Coast over the weekend meant I couldn't make updates, but hopefully you'll enjoy the entry over a cup of coffee or tea made with nice pasteurised milk, and a nice biscuit or two.................... sorry just salivating at what I'm missing :o) A few things I forgot to tell you all when I typed last week. Hi again, Well it's been a busy first week. Lots to take in and adjust to but I think I'm doing pretty well. The only thing I have struggled with towards the end of this week was the humidity. In this first week we've had two short torrential downpoors but nothing else and it's supposed to be the rainy season. As the week has gone on, it's got hotter and hotter and the humidity levels unbearable. You are constantly sweating, and everything you wear sticks to you. I apologsie to those reading, but this may be a long one as I've got some catching up to do. My placement has been secured at the Paradise Nursery and Kindergarten. There was at first some doubt as to whether I would be going here as I'm not a teacher, but our program officer Phillip assured them that I'd be ok for the little ones as it's bascially number work, alphabet work, a small amount of English, simple sums, stories, songs etc. I have completed my first two days - well - I say days. Hi everyone Well - it took a while, but I'm here. Got to the Homebase around 12.30pm Sunday 13th May. We had an 1.5hour delay at Heathrow due to the weather, cargo problems and also the vehicle pulling the plane out of our tight parking spot broke down - so just about any excuse really. The flight was really amazing especially as it was during daylight hours. We took an almost direct line down from the UK to Ghana and so flew right across France, Majorca and Ibiza (as clear as day). I've just finished packing and am over by 2kg's - it was a lot more. I've never been over on my luggage weight before. My hand luggage looks like I'm going on a mini-break. I've been given my placement details for the Paradise Nursery and have been frantically collecting, buying and printing off a few 'things' for the children :o) over the last week. But it's pushed my weight over, so I've been busy condensing for the last hour. My stomach is churning at what lies ahead but I'm excited at the prospect of the unknown.
