Living in a bubble

This weekend I finally got round to bubble wrapping my house. Most of the big windows are now covered and I hope it adds a bit more insulation to my living room and bedroom. It will also give me something to do during the long winter evenings - when I get bored of Japanese TV I can pop my windows to my hearts content. I had a nice surprise Saturday afternoon. I'd just settled down to lunch when I heard some kid's voices outside my window. I figured it might be the kids who live the other side of the rice paddy as I sometimes give them sweets if I seem them around the village. I ignored them for a bit, but then I heard tapping at my door. It turned out to be four little ... read more

Quaking in my boots!

I was sat at my desk in the teachers room yesterday just after lunch, writing an email, when the whole building started to shake like mad. It is such a weird sensation and it kind of takes your brain a few seconds to realise what is happening. There were only a couple of other teachers in the room and I wasn't sure what to do. When I realised it was lasting more than a few seconds I jumped under my desk (which is what we did during the drill as protection from falling objects). No one else did, so I sheepishly jumped back out again. The quake only lasted a matter of seconds, but at that intensity a few seconds is more than enough. I've only felt two before and they were about a 1 or ... read more

Have a very Kentucky Christmas!

The first snows arrived this week, and although it was exciting to see my car covered in a dusting of snow, and the surrounding mountain peaks all white, I was glad they only lasted the morning - I expect in a few weeks we'll have tons, and I still need to get out marathon training this weekend. Luckily I got my snow tires fitted last week - although they don't look that different to me. I'm not sure what I was expecting - maybe some kind of hard core, range-rover style treads....but I'll trust that whatever they've given me will do the trick on the icy, windy mountain roads when the heavy duty snow sets in. I taught my first Christmas lesson at elementary this week and had great fun with it. I wore a santa ... read more

I got a Christmas package from my family today, which was very exciting and I am trying to resist the temptation to open my presents now. I have put them under the rather mangy looking mini fake Christmas tree I found in my cupboard and put on my shelf in a half arsed attempt at decorations. My Mum, bless her, worrying as Mums do about their children being afflicted by the cold, has also bought me a balaclava. I pray it doesn't actually get so cold here I'm desperate enough to wear it out - for fear of scaring dogs and small children....however, I have heard rumours the guy who lived here before was so cold in the house he slept in one. If nothing else, if I get bored of teaching I can turn to ... read more

Autumn glory

After a gruelling 10 mile marathon training run this morning I took advantage of the unusually sunny weather to visit Tenryukyo valley. This is an area about 30 minutes drive from my house. I go there some Saturdays to help out with a kids club, but I'd not had much chance to explore the national park there. There is a short hike you can follow that takes you to a beautiful suspension bridge, with spectacular views of the river valley. Next spring/summer I hope to take one of the boat trips they run down this river. The trees in this area are looking beautiful in their autumn shades - a feast for my camera!... read more

So one of the questions that westerners often get asked (and I've been asked on a few occasions by the school kids) is whether you like natto. Natto is, rather unappealingly, fermented soybeans. Like marmite, it is one of those things you either love or hate. I had held off trying any, but last Friday evening my friend Jane came over to watch a DVD and we decided to give it a go. Well, I can say I’m probably more of a hate camp, although it wasn't quite as grim as I’d expected. It does smell rank, a bit like a smelly cheese and probably the worst thing about it is the stringy consistency, a bit like melted cheese. It is, well, rotting beans, after all. They have whole rows of supermarket fridges devoted to this ... read more

I've been a bit lax of late in updating my blog, what with teacher conferences and lesson planning, so I will remedy this forthwith. I haven't, you'll be pleased to hear, been abducted by the mad Buddhist cult members I met last month. A call bar on my mobile seems to have done the trick so far. I don't think they know where I live... Anyhow, the first snows have started to hit northern Nagano this week. I'm grateful I live in the southern part of the prefecture, where the snows come a little later. The last couple of weeks the temperature has started to plummet and next week I think it is set to fall below zero. My kitchen and bathroom are like a fridge in the mornings. One of the elementary teachers was chatting ... read more

Ok, so I should trust my instincts more....

So, I learnt a valuable lesson today. Trust my instincts more. I thought the random woman who invited me out tonight was a little odd.....and in fact both her and her friend were a right couple of weirdoes. Sigh....what a waste of an evening. I was tired anyway from my ninja exploits and really didn't want to go out anyway, but I'd agreed to meet them at 7.15 and go to one of their houses for (I assumed and I think it was mentioned), dinner. Ogura-san picked me up in her car (with, oddly, yet another strange old man sat in the back of the car...nit the same as the last time). We drove 15 minutes to Toyoka (the next village along) and went into Noriko-san's house. Noriko was younger than Ogura and spoke a little ... read more

This weekend I headed up to northern Nagano to the Togakushi Ninja village, in a beautiful area up in the mountains (http://www.ninjamura.com/english). I drove up the night before with two other friends from Iida and stayed at a friend's house near to Nagano City. She is an excellent cook, so we had a lovely home cooked meal in the evening, before an early night to prepare for our ninja day. We got to dress up in ninja costumes (The main reason I went!) and competed against other teachers on various ninja assault courses. It was a brilliant day out ....apart from when I got a bit cocky on one of the water courses and managed to make an arse of myself by partly falling in, soaking my ninja costume in front of everyone, wailing rather too ... read more

Accosted by random strangers

On Sunday I attempted my first 10km run. I don't think I mentioned it on the blog before, but I got accepted in the Tokyo marathon lottery, so come the end of February I'll be attempting my second full marathon! I've lost most of my Edinburgh marathon fitness, so I'm trying hard to get back into some longer runs here. So, in an attempt to avoid too much mountain running, I parked part way down the mountain, run/walked back up to my house, then did a big loop back down to the village via another longer road (about 5km), then in the village there is a route on the flat (yay!). Anyway, as I was running down the mountain this car pulls over near me. At first I thought the car was turning into a side ... read more
