From bush camp we drove ' hours to the capital city of Ouagadougou, bustling and hot, we are staying at the OK Inn and it is fab with a swimming pool and great meal, I immediately oredered steak. This is our cook groups turn so after having a great time at the pool off to shop at the Marina market; when we got back most of the people that stayed in the restaurant since lunch are plastered; we prepared a soup meals as our lunch was quite heavy; those sober enough managed to eat and the rest staggered to the camp site later on the night. Next day spent on the internet, slow connection so took me hours to upload photos, went back to the camp and spent some time on the pool again and had ... read more

From Sevare we drove on 4WD trucks to take us to Timbuktu, 7 hours it took for yus to get there an hour on paved road then the dirt tracks started, quite bumpy, I got bruises on my legs as I was seated at the very back and the space is cramped. There was a lot of checkpoints quite annoying but the drivers are used to it and did not mind it,we got to a point where we need to cross the river to get accross the road to Timbuktu, as soon as we gotto the other side the roads got better again tree lined tarmac next to the river quite pleasant ride until we got to the town where it was hot and dusty. We quickly settled in in the house that was rented for ... read more

After crossing into the Malian side we drove for half an hour or so to a place where we have to go through customs. The people have been very nice so far waving at us as we pass through, I am loving it so far the people are so friendly and polite and have the most genuine smile, though at one checkpoint after the border the border guard was not impressed by the hordes of kids who ran to wave at us and chat while we are stopped and started shooing them away to no avail, finally he gave up and the kids had fun seeing us off. It is our cook group who have to prepare dinner for the night and we ended up with bulk food from the truck as we have no local ... read more

The Moroccan side of the border took us just over 3 hours to get through, lot of bureaucracy we got stopped no less than 3 times within the frontier, police stop, army stop etc. Then after we are through comes 3 km of no mans land full of garbage and abandoned cars, we stopped a moment to help a stranded car in the sands little did we know we will get stuck as well, out the tire mats and we worked hard to dig betsy out and by the time we got to the Mauritanian frontier it was quarter to 3, the border closed from 1pm to 3pm for lunch, but we hadnt had lunch yet so we set up our kitchen right at the border and have to catch up with the truck as it ... read more

We stopped briefly in Layoune to do some food shopping, this is Western Saharas capital, from there we camped out near a beach and had guy with a gun came by to tell us we are camping in land mine area so everyone was a bit careful going to the toilet that night, it was also Di and Tonys 5th Anniversary so we celebrated a bit. Next day we stopped at Boujdour to do some more food shopping, Dave and me finished up our last dirhams by buying bananas and oranges; moving on we found an excellent camp site near the city of Dakhla in the sand dunes, this is our last night in the disputed territory of Western Sahara; there really is nothing fancy about this place just mostly desert and the occasional smell of ... read more

We have to drive up and through the Atlas mountains to make it to Marrakech, it was rainy and cold though we should not be complaining as it was our first rain it is bloody tiring and annoying to set up and put away tents ahen it is soaking wet. Wr got to the Marrakech camp site 15 kms from the city, lots of peacocks in the camp and wakes you up very early in the morning with their honking sound which Cam can imitate to perfection. Wr all hired a taxi to get to the city is is bustling and full of energy Chrissy and I broke away from the group and tried the seafood, it was excellent! We also had henna tattoos, she on her feet and me on the back of my head. ... read more

Monarch Air flight to Gibraltar was smooth, arrived there late afternoon, quite a sight to walk out of the plane with the massive rock in the background, the tarmac also serves as regular road for cars so they have to close the roads when a plane lands, brief intro and off to our first camp in Spain, where we spent two nights, then off to Algeciras to catch a ferry to Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in the African continent. WIKI INFO: Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The territory shares a border with Spain to the north. Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a Royal Navy base.
