Last minute decision to head to Rizal's Dapitan. Jose Rizal is the Philippines' national hero and was exiled here during the Spanish era for rebellion against the Spanish rule. It was about 2 hours by bus from Oroquieta and the deluxe bus is slow, waiting for passengers everytime. it rained on and off and I fell asleep again waking up as we got dropped off at a junction. Trike touts fight for our fare, we took one to the Rizal Park near the waterfront. This is a quiet town, I think I will like it. we arrived at the park and it is huge, and it's free! The museum is to the right and we checked out all those Rizal memorabilias, normally I am not into museums but this one is cool, Rizal was a civil ... read more

My former co worker in Boston hails from Iligan and her brother Rik contacted me and was nice enough to show me around town and for this weekend he agreed to come with me for a short trip to Misamis and Zamboanga, his kind wife giving a go signal we are off. At the bus terminal we took a deluxe bus to Ozamis, it stopped a lot and in some places wait for passengers, good thing we had a quick breakfast at the terminal. At Makas port there is a long vehicle queue for the ferry across the channel to Ozamis so we got off and decided to take the ferry that's leaving now, paid our fare and got on, we have to wait for vehicles to load. Apparently you can also get to Ozamis by ... read more

There are 2 bus terminals in Cagayan de Oro and if I wanted to go to Iligan I have to get to Bulua terminal, jeepneys heading to "Patag" in the corner of Jollibee is where I waited, I hesitated at first taking jeepney as I have a big backpack and don't want to be an inconvenience to the other passengers, but they actually help me pull the pack all the way in and it's cheap, only 15 pesos I think. We made it there and found a deluxe bus to Pagadian stopping in Iligan, I saw an a/c bus but I know it's more expensive and you can't open the windows, 85 pesos to Iligan, bargain! It was a sunny day and we followed the coastline it got cloudy when we approached Iligan but quickly turned ... read more

Woke up to a drizzly morning but still decided to head out to Bukidnon, from the Parkview Inn I took a jeepney ride to Agora market where at the bus terminal I found a Valencia, Bukidnon bound bus stopping at Malaybalay, the capital of Bukidnon. it was raining on and off on the 2 hour trip passing through lush greenery, pineapple plantations and i think a banana plantation owned by Dole. Arriving at the bus terminal at Malaybalay I hired a reela to take me to Haus Malibu, cost me 20 pesos. I was shocked to find out the cheapest room they have is 600 pesos and its their basic fan room, with toilet but no tv. I asked the receptionist for recommendations of other places to stay, cheap but clean, she told me to walk back ... read more

Sea cat is a fast craft that now has a regular scheduling plying from Cagayan de Oro City to Benoni in Camiguin everyday at 8:30am, cheapest ticket at Main and View deck for 400 pesos. I got there early to buy my ticket, as in Pinoy time of course it did not leave on time as there are late comers. It was smooth sailing, the day started hazy but cleared up and the sea was generally calm until we got out into the open sea and I got wet with sprays from the front as the wind picked up considerably, this did not bother so much as the pesky people smoking in the deck and 2nd hand smoke blows in every direction, then they throw out the butts in the sea! even the gringos do the ... read more

Took a Bachelors bus out from a simple bus terminal next to the main road, it goes to Butuan then i connected to Cagayan de Oro. It is still raining but started to ease up as we approach Cagayan and was relieved to finally see bits of sun as i find a taxi in the chaotic bus terminal. I was dropped off at Wilshire Hotel the cheapest room is 450 with tv and a/c. There is a musty smell in the room, turned the a/c right away. I asked for info from the front desk about travels to ... read more

At the bus terminal in Davao, touts told me just tell the security checkpoint you came from the airport and they won't check your backpack thoroughly and so I went past without a hitch and looked for the Bachelors bus line, the a/c bus does not stop in Bunawan, I have to take the slow deluxe bus which stops at every town, took us 5 hours to get to Bunawan, along the way 2 checkpoints one of which the men have to step down the bus while the bus is being searched, we went through almost every province in the area, Compostela, Bukidnon, Davao del Norte even Surigao del Sur, I was dropped off at the new bus terminal, I was told there that the tourism office is in town at the municipal hall so have ... read more

The bus took an hour for Marbel from GenSan and cost me 50 pesos,I fell asleep in the bus then woke up at the bus terminal, I asked the security people where to take the bus to Surallah another small town, he pointed me to the buses out back, I hopped on, this bus is a chicken bus but a bit more comfy than the ones in Latin America, about 30 minutes and 22 pesos later I am at the Surallah bus station, someone pointed me to the jeepneys that will take me to Lake Sebu for 30 pesos a 45 minute ride. At the end of the ride, I took a motorbike to Punta Isla resort near the lake, I can see a lot of fish pen on both side of the road, I take ... read more

Left my big backpack at the My Hotel reception, they promise to keep an eye on it while I am away for couple days, there's a jeepney that takes you to Ecoland bus terminal outside the hotel, the tip coming from the security guard, took maybe 20 minutes to get there. At the main entrance I waited for Maricar, Olan's friend, she is from Gen San and is willing to show me around her town. We agreed to meet up at 12noon but i have waited for over an hour and no sign of her! I told one of the baggage security guys if anyone asks (assuming it would be her) I am already gone. Some touts guided me to the Yellow bus terminal, then as I was about to get in the bus there was ... read more

flight from Manila to Davao took a good hour and a half and I slept right away. Arriving just before 6pm as we stepped out of the tube gate the 1st thing I notice is the strong smell of durian, welcoming me to Mindanao!! The terminal is nice and clean, after picking up my backpack I came out and waited for Olan outside, not 10 minutes later he showed up, 1st time meeting is always awkward but he right away made me feel at home, he is my 2nd Couch Surfing host. he has his own car and he immediately showed me around the city by night going through neighborhoods, the main drag, the bar area, what i noticed is they have their own version of jeepney, its much smaller and I thought immediately, my backpack ... read more
