Leave me alone South America » Ecuador » North » Quito
- FOOD: Pizza with a grey crust, Indian that took ages to arrive so many cuba libras were our starter, banana and nut pancakes that didn't cure the hangover, Thai food which was just ok. Typical Ecuadorian dish of sausage, mash and cheese and avocado. - AREA: New Town Quito has small streets similar to Soho but they don't feel too safe at night. Old Town Quito reached by tram is nicer with plazas, many more people and a fantastic high cathedral with views of the whole city after climbing the steep dodgy stairs. Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World) [View Full Entry]

- FOOD: My bad diet was broken by 'ceviche' - a Peruvian/Ecuadorian dish of fish marinated in chilis and lime juice and served with chopped tomatoes and raw onion, served with pop corn! Sadly the desert of tinned peaches and squirty cream let the meal down. - AREA: Cuenca is classed as Ecuador's most beautiful colonial city with it's narrow, cobbled streets and colourful houses with balconies. Sadly my accommodation did not live up to this pretty picture! - PEOPLE: Locals that stare. Not many tourists. - WEATHER: Am I back in the UK? Thur 30th June: The moment I arrived [View Full Entry]

Bus boredom South America » Peru » La Libertad » Trujillo
- FOOD: Junk food and more junk food - what else is there to buy when you're stuck on a bus all day and night. At least my choc covered nuts and Sublime bar addictions are being fed well. - AREA: The inside of a bus or a bus terminal. Or a depressing town (I'm sure both Trujillo and Piura are much nicer in the day and away from the bus terminals - I hope so anyway). - PEOPLE: More people fascinated by Olly but at a time when I did not want the attention. A border man that SMILED amongst [View Full Entry]

Boarding on the dunes South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina
- FOOD: Breakfast at the HI (yes, I set foot in the place). - AREA: So pretty set in the middle of sand dunes the height of mountains (as steep as mountains too I discovered when climbing up them to go sand boarding). Speeding down the sand dunes on your bum and looking like a sand monster at the end of it. 2 hours in Lima - my impressions were BIG city, lots of neon lights and busy. - PEOPLE: Gringo city. But nice Gringos who let me hang out with them. Sucker hostel man who is taken in by a [View Full Entry]

- FOOD: Potato dish thing that woman on stall was having for her lunch - she let me try a bit as I was looking so longingly at it after having bought yet more choc and crisps (all they have on sale on these stalls - where are the packaged sandwiches?!) Cheer up chocolate cake - AREA: Depressing Nazca town but very interesting Nazca lines which can only be seen by air (in a tiny bumpy plane). Very clear and all sorts of shapes and sizes. Huacachina - Oasis paradise village in the middle of massive sand dunes. - PEOPLE: Not [View Full Entry]

Party time (or not) South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco
- FOOD: Rehydration salts, an ok Chinese, the best hot chocolate in Jack's cafe, the best bacon and egg roll in Jack's cafe. - AREA: Party time at 'Sexy Woman' for Inti Raymi (Inca festival) - been to better parties but not many as colourful as this one.... or as crowded. BINGO on the bus to Nazca (at last!) - PEOPLE: Many in colourful costumes pretending to be Inca people. MANY on the hill watching these people. Sad goodbyes to my friends. Excitable locals playing bingo on the bus. Fri 24th June: I certainly wasn't feeling great but armed with rehydration [View Full Entry]

- FOOD: Excellent food on the tour, especially the soups and supplies of popcorn. Live termites that taste of mint. Animal shaped biscuits (so yummy) and Sublime bars - we're addicted. - AREA: In the jungle, the mighty jungle.... WOW. A must experience. Everything is huge - including the spiders. Such a variety of plant and animal life, but didn't see any anacondas still. Mountain biking, white water rafting, canopy sliding and staying in wooden lodges in the middle of the jungle. - PEOPLE: Fantastic tour group. Apart from them, we didn't see many others except for the lucky few that [View Full Entry]

- FOOD: The best hot chocolate in the world in Jack's Cafe. After a lovely crackling and alpaca starter in a posh restaurant, the Peruvian delicacy, guinea pig, was ordered. Luckily arrived not in it's usual form of legs sticking up and head attached. Strong meat, but picky and fatty. A once only experience. - AREA: Big market selling lots of food and crafts. Easy to barter! Amazing Inca ruins through relatively unused routes, with so many terraces. Stonework better than Machu Picchu dare I say it. Very impressive cathedral back in Cuzco - with NICE statues but a Tiger Lily [View Full Entry]

All that and more South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu
- FOOD: Well deserved huge pizza after walking for hours. Coffee and cake on the first class train back. - AREA: WOW, worth it's status as a prime tourist site. Amazing, smooth rocked architecture, cool acoustics, stunning forested mountained backdrop, spiritual rocks. Climb up the famous Waynapicchu mountain and down to the Temple of the Moon through jungle scenery. - PEOPLE: Not too many to begin with but a mass of American tourists by the end. Excitable adults on the first class train back when the 'entertainment' came on - an alpaca fashion show! - WEATHER: Glorious sunrise over [View Full Entry]

- FOOD: Nothing much to report here for once. - AREA: High season and fully booked up. Not used to this. Ollantaytambo is a small village with a relazed feel with a fantastic Inca fortress, old Inca plaza and hills to climb (steep and hard work though). Cheap, nice hostel. - PEOPLE: Chatty locals. Wish I could chat more than the basics with them. Old man begging for money and crying. Heartbreaking. Cute local boy who decided to be my guide for climbing the hill. Other cute locals who demand money! - WEATHER: Burning sun. Thur 16th: I left my backpack [View Full Entry]
