Vanessas journey

Vanessa Magdelyns

In 2009, I decided to participate in a program to work in America.
From August 1st 2010, I worked as an educator for a year on the East Coast.
I worked with children from 9 to 13 years old with mental disabilities and autism at Seven Hills Foundation, Fitchburg, MA.
On my days off and vacation I traveled and discovered the American culture.

Have a nice journey by following me thru this blog

After work I picked up David and Steve at the airport. Chilling evening with lots of french talking. It's nice to speak face to face again in your own language. We went to the Market Basket, store nearby my apartment, so the guys can grab some nice food and have a first taste of the American cuisine. We went 4 days to Boston and each day saw another part of Boston. Wednesday, 13 April As it was raining all day we went to Rockingham Mall in New Hampshire and to Wal Mart. Amazing how some guys can enjoy shopping :-) In the afternoon we went to Boston. We walked through Boston Common to Newbury street, a shopping street. We went to stores that Steve and David looked up on the internet and were interested in as ... read more

Here are some pictures from all the snow I had in Massachusetts. We had our first snow on the 11th of December and as if the weather wanted to fool us we had our last snow on the 1st of April. Since then we had some lightly snow showers but nothing bad :-) The tempartures is still around 50°F (10°C) and it feels like there is no spring here. I can't wait to have summer especially when I see how nice the weather is in Belgium. And just to screw the weather I refuse to wear my winter jacket anymore. BASTA!... read more

Before I left Belgium, my grandsparents told me the story of my great-great-uncle who went to NY in de early twenties. He was a Chaplain at the Cenacle, Lake Ronkonkoma in Long Island, NY. He spent 20 years as a missionary in Mongolia where he taught catechism to the young and old. He got sick and returned to Belgium. In 1926 he went to America where he became a priest of the Diosese of Brooklyn and then a Chaplain of the Religious of the Cenacle. So I decided to visit the convent and his grave in Ronkonkoma. I send an email to the Sisters of Cenacle and Sister Madeline called me back to make an appointment. I took the train at Penn Station and a taxi to the Convent. The Sisters welcomed me and were really ... read more

Four o'clock in the morning, I get up to get dressed to take the express bus to New York. After almost four hours driving I arrive in the city. It's so cold and I'm happy I have my warm jacket and scarf. First stop the hostel, I take the Red line to 103rd. The subway is crowded by New Yorkers going to work and I'm happy to hop off with my big bag. After I drop my things, I'm heading to the centre by foot. After a couple of blocks and a warm 'Pumpkin Spice Latte' at the Starbucks, I decide to take the subway to South Ferry. The ferry to Staten Island passes by the Statue of Liberty. This ferry is free and even from here I have a nice view of New York skyline ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! American Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. The custom of celebrating Thanksgiving, an annual celebration held after the harvest began around 1621 when the Pilgrims fulfilled a successful and bountiful harvest in the New World. The first Thanksgiving Proclamation was made in 1675. In the late 1700's a day of national Thanksgiving was proposed by the Continental Congress. In 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual custom. By the middle of the 19th century many other states also celebrated a Thanksgiving Day. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of thanksgiving. Since then each president has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation, usually designating the fourth Thursday of each November as the holiday. American Traditions....
