Today I amazingly woke up at 8 am feeling fully rested! I went downstairs to start my day with the standard homemade bread with honey and a small yogurt and found my host mom in the kitchen in the middle of making a new batch of bread for the week. We chatted for a bit, and then I went back to my room to attempt to write my paper on the French environmental policies. After being less than productive, I met Allison for lunch at our favorite pasta place—Francesca’s—in Place Plume. We mapped out today to see Tours a little better—we went to the Museum of Natural History, the Wine Museum, and the Chateau in Tours—all of which were hilarious in their own way. The first floor of the Museum of Natural History seemed like a ... read more

The week after April break we had great weather in Tours. Monday and Tuesday I met up with the “cool” side of town (obviously my side) and we went to Monoprix (our favorite one stop shop for all our French needs) and got bagettes, ham, cheese, and chocolate—perfect components for the perfect picnic. We met the rest of the BEFers at the Prebends park (close to where everyone else lives) and enjoyed the sunlight and being completely reunited after such a long time apart in April. We were just sitting in the grass, chatting, when an old man came up to us and starting speaking to us in English. I don’t know if he wanted to practice his English or what, but he enlightened us about how that park is the most beautiful one in all ... read more

Finding BEF

Allison, Denise, and I didn’t want to miss our last excursion with the whole BEF gang, so we tried to catch up with them in the Perigord region of France. The excursion was Friday through Sunday, and while we were flying Friday, we still thought it was possible to make it to most of the excursion. We landed at Charles DeGaulle and took a TGV straight to Bordeaux, getting there about midnight. We stayed in a hotel with the most comfortable beds ever (or maybe that’s just compared to Hotel Rachel in Aegina—I think I forgot to mention that all three beds there were so horrible in their different ways that each night we rotated beds, so each morning we would wake up sore in a different way. But alas, we were only in this new ... read more

The Dream Comes Crashing Down

Going to Aegina could have been a low point, or just the most hilarious point of our travels. It started out like a great adventure—Greek yogurt and honey for breakfast, then metro to the taxi to the port. When the taxi driver asked us which gate at the port we wanted to go to, we all enjoyed replying “anywhere…” We found tickets pretty easily—10 euro tickets on a boat that left in half an hour to Aegina, the island that was closest to Athens. We had spent about 2.5 minutes looking it up the night before and Denise had scrawled the name of a Hotel that looked really cheap but had really great reviews on the island, and was right next to the supposedly best beach on the island, although we didn’t know if we’d really ... read more

We got back to Athens Sunday night, met up with Michael and Mackenzie at an Athens hotel, and played cards to pass the time since the next flight they could find out was Thursday and our flight for Tuesday was most likely going to be canceled due to the volcano. Allison, Denise, and I still had to see the acropolis, so Monday we got up and checked it out—pretty cool…we climbed up, took a few pictures, attempted to take pictures without massive amounts of the no-doubt original 400 BC scaffolding, failed, then climbed back down. We went in a bunch of little gift shops around there just to kill the time, but it was kind of annoying because every store-owner in Greece talks to you in broken English for the entire time you’re in their store, ... read more

Enjoying the Sun

The second half of our stay in Ios was just as enjoyable as the first. Mackenzie, Michael, and I went four-wheeling again (we got a few more hours free because one of the four-wheelers had kind of stopped going up hills the day before and we couldn’t go where we wanted to, so the owner let us take them out again with no extra charge). We found one of Ios’ “hidden beaches” which was beautiful, and also ran into some cows while driving. As in they were in the lane right next to us. Seemed like kind of a hazard to me, but we survived. We returned later that day to play cards—our new favorite pass time. We all strived for the perfect game (it’s a bidding game, so a perfect game would be if we ... read more

Thursday, we decided to make a quick day trip to Santorini—the island where they filmed Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants! The ferry schedule didn’t actually give us that much time there—only about four and a half hours—but this was long enough for us to do what we had come for…riding donkeys! We took the cable car ride down from the main town to the water (Allison and Denise were terrified) and then we rode some donkeys back up some 700 steps! It was fabbbbbbbbulous, although far less organized than we had been expecting. Basically we walked by all these donkeys that were just chillin’, then the guy helped me climb on one, and then my donkey just started going. I was a little concerned (should there be someone in front of me? Shouldn’t my donkey wait ... read more

We woke up Monday morning psyched and ready to head to Ios—our little Greek paradise! After a 4 hour ferry ride, we arrived in Ios a little before noon. A man who looked about 35-40 wearing a Brazil jacket met us as we came got off the ferry, holding a sign for “Far Out” the name of our resort. We found out about this resort because last year’s BEF group had come here and had told us that it fabulous and cheap. So, without really researching other places, we booked it. The five of us piled into Brazil man’s van (his jacket had given him this name for the duration of our trip) and drove through the island’s largest town (which was tiny) on the way to Far Out. It was beautiful—right on the beach, a ... read more

Saturday morning, as hinted at in the end of my last entry, we woke up after a less than peaceful night’s sleep at met Mackenzie and her boyfriend Michael outside our hostel at 5 am to split a cab to the airport. After the 30 or so minute ride to the airport, we all get our money to pay the cab driver. Michael pulls out his wallet, opens it, and says “This isn’t my wallet…” Turns out he and a friend of his had bought the same wallet in Florence and Michael unknowingly took his friend’s wallet of the nightstand that morning and had left his own behind. He had his passport with him still, so we could get through security. He tried to leave his friend’s wallet somewhere so that he could come by later ... read more

Right now I'm about halfway through April Break! I have internet in the hostel we're staying at in Rome, but I don't want to spend all my time on the computer so I'll give you a quick update of what I've been up to with more detailed entries to come! Allison and I left last Friday to go to Catania, Sicily where we enjoyed a day walking around the city, then a day with a guided Tour of Mt. Etna--Europe's largest Volcano! It's still active today, and we saw sites of the larger lava flows in 1971, 79, and 2002, which was really cool! We also got to do a little cave diving in a lava cave from a really really really long time ago. Then we moved onto Taormina which was absolutely beautiful, saw the ... read more
