Vagabunda - Lorelei Winters

Lorelei Winters My roommates in Argentina liked to call me "vagabunda" which means vagabond. I guess I truly am. But I blame my family...we are all vagabonds, but, hey, that's okay with me. They and I are always looking for new international adventures. I like to spend months in a country. We'll see if I am able to figure out how to do that in my career.

Monday, April 02, 2007 Argentine Memories I recently found some old pictures from my year in Argentina (hence the reason they are in my picture section and are four years old) and thought that I'd write a few random memories. Another reason being is that while I was down there my video camera and camera were stolen (actually when I was in the Lima Airport) and my computer crashed taking with it my journal of the school year. That pretty much sucked. I am trying to maintain the memories while I can. First trip to Buenos Aires: We went for [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, March 13, 2007 Oh, dumb reality Travel is sort of like a drug for me because I let it be an escape from all the craziness (namely life decisions and General Chemistry) that drowns me when I'm at home. Unfortunately I've unwillingly had to dunk myself back into the madness. In order to maintain some traces of the "drug," here is a short summary of our other adventures: We had a fantastic stay on the Nicoya Peninsula surfing, lounging in hammocks, eating wonderful food, walking on the beach, chilling with the expats, and playing Rook. We also visited some [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, March 06, 2007 Surfing in the Bad Country We had a glorious sunset filled ferry ride over to the peninsula. By the time we arrived it was dark, so we drove straight to the Belgians´ house. They have a great open air porch and hammocks to go along with it. We chatted, then Giles helped us find a place at ¨Surfer´s Paradise." Well, it´s not so much. Kat, Mike, and I are sleeping on the ground, but we are getting a better deal. Oh, and everything keeps falling apart. Today we surfed most of the day except for a [View Full Entry]

Monday, March 05, 2007 Bienvenidos a Monte Verde y Monte Verde y.... Monday, March 5 Howdy Folks. Well, this trip has been bitter sweet so far, mostly sweet, but a little bitter for my little stop over in Houston, Texas. I´ve loved just about all our activities in Costa Rica, but I ended up having to give up probably my most treasured material possession--my passport. Hoarg, it´s a long story I don´t have time to write about, but basically I had to scurry into town, get a new passport, and get on a new flight to Costa Rica by four [View Full Entry]

Sunday, January 07, 2007 Someone Turned on the Kenyan Faucet So, if one were to go back to my meager post about Africa from last year, he or she would find that I basically only mention the drought. Well, this year Kenya made up for all lost rain and then some. Every day life was filled with people lifting up their pants tip-toeing through swamps, stranded vehicles spinning holes deeper and deeper into the soil, mud splattered faces and bodies...all thanks to the endless rain. Quite a change. We probably didn't see the same quantity of animals--safari was a bit [View Full Entry]

Wednesday, August 16, 2006 It was a good summer... Current mood: grateful I remember: basking in cool humid-free mornings and evenings, sleeping on the porch, gazing up at the tall skinny trees, surfing at sunset and in the early morn, scarfing ridiculously too much food then taking a siesta and playing ball tag on days-off, navigating the winding-deer-infested road, watching the World Cup, touting around our mascot Herbert the Stuffed Dragon, scurrying all over the place for supplies, hanging off the side of a cliff in Montana, searching frantically through nasty garbage cans, di [View Full Entry]

To an Unknown God Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Saturday, May 20, 2006 To an Unknown God Becky and I arrived in Athens yesterday afternoon a little pooped from our eight hour ferry from Santorini to Pireus; we had woken up at 5:30AM to make it to the dock. We had been having issues with transportation in the islands, so we were greatly relieved to see Becky's last name held up as we left the ferry. Our driver dropped us off at our hotel, we put things away, and emerged to try and find our way through the enormous city that is Athens. I have to be honest. My [View Full Entry]

Hiking in Samos Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora
Becky and I did our normal morning routine: wake up, clean up, eat breakfast, hoard extraitems from breakfast for the afternoon, and then leave. We had to pack up all of our stuff because we'd be leaving (ALREADY!) that afternoon for Mykonos. In the morning we looked at the massive kore (male youth) statues and scary griffin handles in the Samos Archeological museum. Afterwards, we decided we needed some nature time, so we took a local bus west to a very small town suggested by my guidebook as a great place to go. I told the driver where we wanted to [View Full Entry]

Turkey was amazing, but it was time to say goodbye. The next morning we launched off towards Samos and what we hoped would be some rest and relaxation. Thankfully our wish was soon fulfilled. We tooka peacefulferry ride and after settling into our hotel located 500 meters from the port, we took a local bus to a beach (we had wanted to rent a moped, but none of us had an international driver's licence). I read in my guidebook that the beach was rocky, but that are sandy beaches nearby. Imagining rocky beaches in the US' Northeast, I figured we would probably [View Full Entry]

Our final full day in Kusadasi we were picked up by no other than our Ephesus tour guide. Yea. I tried to keep on a happy face. Thankfully we had a great group of fellow tourists who were passionate about photography and seeing all the sites at a slow pace. The guide also apologized, sort of. He took us to Pergammom. I started sluggishly looking around at the ruins, not completely listening to the historical explanations (which is strange because I LOVE history), and snapping a photo here and there. Finally, at the temple of Zeus I realized that Pergammonis significant [View Full Entry]
