We rose at 4:30 to batten down Vanita, shower, and make our ferry connection to Prince Rupert. The day dawned grey and the sun remained hidden for the entire journey. By the middle of the afternoon, the clouds started to give off a steady drizzle, which lasted until the end of the day. It took them over an hour to load the ferry - a far cry from what we are used to on the southern routes. But they pack them in like sardines. The ferry was completely full; we figured it held about 150 vehicles, a few of which were RVs. Fortunately we were one of the first ones aboard, so we were able to get out of the car and start exploring the ship. The ferry journey lasts a full 16 hours. We made ... read more

After breakfasting with Maureen and Marcel, we left Parksville around 10 am, headed northward. We chose to take highway 19A almost as far as Campbell River, and really enjoyed meandering through tourist country along the water. The traffic was light, and we drove leisurely, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the oceanside communities between Parksville and Campbell River. While this is a prime tourist destination, it hasn’t been developed to the nth degree as so many places have these days. There is room for wildflowers to grow between the well-groomed gardens, and there is a casual friendliness in this area that makes me feel guilty when I lock the car door behind me before going into a café or shop. I imagine it must make me look like someone from a big city, and that ... read more

La vida in retirement-ville July 4, we arose an at obscenely early hour to bid farewell to Pacific Rim National Park - went to Long Beach and watched it rain for 15 minutes, basically, as the tide began to come back in, then took off for Parksville. Leaving early enabled us to avoid heavy traffic during the snakey bits of Highway 4, always a clever tactic. We arrived in Coombs in time to enjoy second breakfast (as Frodo would say) at Goats on the Roof - delicious chorizo quiche for Kath and teriyaki pork chops for Roberta. Then we went to hang out at the Parksville Beach (where the tide was way out) for an hour or so (Roberta walked the beach, Kath napped) before heading for Maureen and Marcel’s place. And what a place it ... read more

Canada Day, take 2 It’s been overcast much of today, and at 5:00 pm it seems to be turning cold. We are parked again at Long Beach, amongst the surfers, who are here in force. When we first got here, around 8:30, all the best view spots were already taken. We settled for one of the lesser view spots, made and ate our breakfast of oatmeal, Buck grapefruit, and mocha, and then headed for Tofino, where we aspired to use the Internet and take showers. We succeeded at the first, but failed at the second, so I think tonight it’s going to be sponge bath in the camper time. Or maybe we should fill the black plastic shower bag and put it on the roof for a few hours to see if it works in this ... read more

Long Beach, July 1, 2005 Hello everyone, Roberta here. Happy Canada Day Yesterday we spent a glorious day at a part of Long Beach where we can park the van just 20 or 25 feet from the beach. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner in our van, facing the beach. We walked along the beach, the sun was in and out from behind the clouds. Katherine flew her kite. We sat outside and read intermittently while watching the waves roll in and out. It was a perfect day. Today we are in the same area, and had breakfast here, but it is raining off and on. I’m so glad we took full advantage of yesterday’s sunshine. There are several Canada Day celebrations starting in an hour or two. We plan to go to one of them. ... read more

Pacific Rim Monday, June 27 we left Victoria around 1 pm, heading for Pacific Rim National Park, where we planned to camp for seven nights. We made the almost obligatory stop at Coombs to visit Goats on the Roof, but we didn’t do much shopping - we’ll be coming back this way again in a week. The ice cream cones were a bit too much to resist, however. If you love ice cream, this is the place to get it. Dozens of flavors and their single dip cone is enormous enough to feed us both. (Unfortunately we were greedy, though, and we each had our own, for which Roberta paid dearly a bit later that day.) We arrived at our destination about 6 pm, and had our first glimpse of wildlife almost the moment we entered ... read more

Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo Getting up at the crack of dawn is always easier when it’s to set off on an adventure. Our alarm went off at 4:30 Saturday morning, June 25. It was an especially short night because the previous night we had been out to see the Diana Krall concert, and didn’t hit the hay until after 1:30. We were aiming for the 6:30 ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, with the intention of putting down the bed and sleeping on the ferry, but we ended up on one of those sloped ramps, so sleeping was out of the question. Victoria We arrived at our friend Orleen’s house in Victoria almost the same moment she did, around 11 am, having stopped for a leisurely breakfast in Nanaimo. Saturday afternoon we went down to Wharf ... read more

Final preparations to the camper To our great delight, the new poptop canvas we ordered at the end of May arrived Friday, so we will have it in place for the trip. We’re having it installed tomorrow at Go West. They will also replace our incandescent light fixture with a fluorescent one - hopefully keeping the camper cooler on hot nights, and saving the battery as well. We are hoping the used Bentley manual Kath ordered last week will also arrive before we leave. This is the official Westy repair manual, which many Westy owners like to keep in the vehicle, in case they run into mechanical problems far away from the nearest good VW mechanic. We have also packed the list of reputable VW mechanics in BC and Alberta, which we downloaded from Roadhaus Website ... read more

Yeah, well, we kind of chickened out on that Route 20 drive from Bella Coola to Williams Lake thing! The next door neighbor told us this morning he punctured two tires the last time he drove that stretch. He was, until recently, a wilderness guilde. We've been waffling on this part of our plan for a week now, and this convinced us to change our plans. So we went back to the drawing board and booked the Inside Passage instead, from Port Hardy all the way up to Prince Rupert. For a virtual tour of the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, go to Queen of The North. So now we still leave Port Hardy July 7, but heading for Prince Rupert -- an 18 hour journey. While we're in the neighborhood, we figured we ... read more
