I traveled from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station aboard a large coach bus, and am glad I did. The greenery and landscape along the way more than made up for the six hour bus ride. Since my bus disembarked at the main transportation hub, finding my way to the subway service that I needed took very little effort. Finding and checking into Suzie’s Guesthouse where I spent four nights was also easy. Suzie’s is a safe, comfortable, no frills sort of place with a very friendly staff. To me Kuala Lumpur is the sort of place where it takes a while to know what you are dealing with, or whether or not you will like it. When I first arrived I thought the city had certain hardness about it. People seemed serious, maybe even indifferent ... read more

Most descriptions I have read of Singapore begin with its strict penal code and end with its economic prosperity and meticulously clean environment. These descriptions imply a tightly run, highly controlled society, with an intelligently managed economy. To me, it also suggests by and large, a consistent set of values that most foreigners cannot immediately understand nor fully appreciate during their typical 3-5 day stay. Touching ground in a new country is electrifying. Although I enjoy the whole experience--my curiosity, sometimes apprehension, about the person sitting next to me, the low rumbling sound when the captain starts the engine, and the aerial view of the land below--something about touching ground really excites me. Such is the case for touching ground in Panama. Like past times, I was ready to assume my role as (humor me here) the savvy traveler, but more importantly, as a temporary resident of Panama. With a college semester’s worth of Spanish and two immersion weekends behind me, I was ready. Well, well, well… I had to tweak my readiness a bit. So now there is a new readiness about me. It comes with a new favorite statement, “habla mas despasio por favor.” Yep, you said it right. ... read more
