I feel like a real university student; not a usual feeling for me as I would not say my life in architecture in Carleton is anything like a typical university student’s experience. Today I had to wake up early and rush to shower and get ready to I could be out the door on time to walk to school and not be late for my first “Logic and Theory of Design” class. This was difficult as now I try to think about what I wear to make a good first impression, I actually care if my hair looks frizzy and some days I even take almost five minutes doing my make up just to come close to comparing to all the European girls on the street. No one leaves their house in sweat pants and runners. ... read more

Familiarity how i missed you

It is not long before you are able to find familiarity amongst all else that persists to be unfamiliar. Even within a new town and new place, if you search hard enough, you are able to find little pieces of home; little pieces of your old life and old self that put the constant shock at ease. The initial shock of the freezing cold water has worn off and now I am learning all I have to do is keep kicking my feet and I’ll swim. All I have to do is take this adventure and experience day by day and soon a new normal; a new familiar will grow. The feeling of homesickness that everyone feels every once and a while is due to being put off routine and regularity and being unable to feel ... read more

Ready for our first day of classes; intimidated by the fact that we will not know anyone, not know where to go or what to do or exactly what is expected of us. We don’t know what to wear, what to say or how to act; I have never been the new kid but I can’t imagine it being that much fun. The other half of me is beyond the intimidation factor of a new place and has become more excited; excited to meet new people and learn new things. I am excited to start studying what I love in a new way and in a new place. So despite the emotions running through my body I got up early this morning ready to embrace it all. First we decided, since our studio class did not ... read more

With the weather temperature averaging around ten degrees today with sunshine and blue skies we decided to explore around our new home and walk fifteen minutes to see the sea. Along our walk we come to discover so many more close amenities such as grocers, little shops and boutiques, restaurants and shisha cafes, and a very large candy store. Of course in Turkey this does not mean your average candy store with Oh Henry bars, lollipops, and jelly beans, this means Turkish delight, and baklava, and other weird things wrapped in other weird sweet things that I still do not know what they are called. Despite the fact that I had no idea of what I was looking at or what I was sampling the store was still a wonderful sight to my eyes as the ... read more

Allah wake up call, morning market, and off to school in preparation for another day of hell in attempt to try to register for courses. Good news is that we successfully locked our door this morning, and more good news is that our dreaded day turned out to be not so bad after all. We went to our new and beautiful architecture school, to the same office and to see the same lady as we had the day before (the one that could hardly speak English), when we were immediately redirected to go straight to the dean of all of architecture. Scared of his high up position and worried we would leave yet again with no courses, but all of these concerns disappeared when we were greeted by a fluent in English old and very cute ... read more

I have a cold; a sniffily, stuffy nose, head ach and a very sore throat. This can only mean one thing…school. I do not know how my body does so well with timing but it seems that whenever I am in school I am sick. I was not even dreading school; I was not scared of it or worried or concerned or stressed. I was excited to meet new people, learn new things and explore more areas. But my body just knows that when in an instituted area, I am weakened. My first intuitive idea to get rid of this cold as soon as possible was to attempt to sweat it out on a morning run, not that I have seen a runner or an appropriate sidewalk to run on since I have arrived in Istanbul, ... read more

The five of us are finally all here in Istanbul, in our flat and starting our new lives. We decided that since school starts tomorrow we should be tourists here before we start to be students here. Today we walked across the bridge to the other side of the river, through the markets, weaved around some side streets, and attempted to follow a map. We arrived at the tourist destinations after an adventure itself and ready to start the next adventure right away. We visited the Istanbul Cistern, the Aga Sofia and the Grand Bazzar. The Cistern is Istanbul’s ancient way of transporting and storing water. Inside this underground water storage were columns of Corinthian, Ionic and Doric styles. The most amazing part here was Medusas two heads. They were located at the bottom of two ... read more

Our first night drinking downtown Istanbul, I could not say that I was expecting anything that I encountered, but to learn to expect the unexpected I have learned guarantee a fun night too. Our night out began the same way a night out anywhere begins for a girl; contemplation of what to wear. Here, the debate was a little more difficult as we had no idea what these girls would be wearing to bars and clubs. We have heard rumors and warnings to not show to much skin but we have seen girls on the street dressing quite nicely during the day, many of which are wearing tights and skirts, or lower cut shirts (nothing too promiscuous, but more than expected still). In the end, we all opted to wear something conservative such as black pants ... read more

Day three; we decided we would try to act more like locals, as in we would try to survive better in the streets and at the market. So we headed out to the square under grey skies and tackled the now wet mountainous hill because it was raining. The streets were still busy with people and street vendors were still lining its edges trying to sell anything to you. Today, because it was raining, there were numerous umbrella sales men alongside all the other street sales products which include (but are not exclusive to) Kleenex, chestnuts, socks, hats, Pringles, chocolate covered things, popcorn, flowers, balloons, cotton candy, etc. We did not buy an umbrella but instead opted to take some cover at a nearby café for a coffee. This time I learned or order filtered coffee ... read more
