Today we decided to go to Monkey Mia to check it out and also the campsite! There isn't much to do in Denham itself... So we got up really early, 6am, and went to Monkey Mia to watch the first feed of the dolphins at 7.30am. When we arrived they were swimming in the bay, beautifull to watch - they are so gracefull. When we went in the water they would come right up to you or play around you, but without touching you! They only feed 5 adult female dolphins between 8am and 12pm and only a certain amount of fish, a 1/4 of their daily diet - so they don't get too lazy! Depending on their weight, age and size depends how much they get, 900 grams for the younger ones and 2 kg ... read more

Didn't sleep well at all!! Chris had to get up at 1 am to fix the tent pegs back in the ground - after having extreme difficulty getting them in in the first place! - the ground is solid rock! Nightmare! The wind was so strong he couldn't stand up... It was wrapping around the tent making so much noise - we are glad we had a decent tent! As i was very very grumpy Chris suggested to go to the Ocean Park to see some sharks. It's a natural marine exhibition 8km from Denham. We saw live sharks being fed, turtles, snappers, really big fish, sea snakes, rays and some really colourfull fish - can't remember the name, but they were all sorts of blues, greens, yellows and purples... The guided tour was really interesting, ... read more

Today we got to Shark Bay after a really long drive! We stopped off at Hamelin Pool to see the Stromatolites. These are columns, formed by cyanobacteria, which is the earliest form of life on earth and they tell scientists how much life has evolved. They created the majority of oxygen on the planet to allow the first creatures to evolve and breath! So it's thanks to these little things that we are all here today! We also got to see the closed down quarry of shell stone, where rain water fuses limestone and the shells together, creating a hard rock but that can be cut by a saw. It looks like a concrete block but made out of millions of shells. This rock was first used to build in the area, only a couple of ... read more

Went to Kalbarri National Park to do the walks but found that the car we had wasn't able to go off road to get there, the road was way too bumby! ( Even though they said it was accesible for most vehicules, a 4x4 is required). So we ended up doing alternative walks. We went up to Meanarra Hill, a look out point accros the whole of the bay, river and Valley. Then we went for a coastal walk, we walked from Mushroom Rock to Rainbow Valley. We got to see lot's of cool wildlife in the rocks then walked over to Red Bluff. This is a coastal look out point with amazing views. Worth the walk! If you are lucky you might even see some dolphins! It was a really good day...... read more

The plan was to stay in Geraldton tonight but got there and wasn't much to do so we kept going until we got to Kalbarri National Park. Found a lovely campsite across the road from the beach - beautifull coastline! There are a few cafes, restaurants etc so a nice place to spend a couple of days whilst exploring the area. The National Park looks stunning aswell as the coastal walks. Today was Chris's first contact with the "dangerous" wildlife... whilst cleaning the front of the car a very big fat hairy spider decided to crawl up his foot!!! But don't worry i left him there to die... thinking of the money.... only Kidding !!!!!! He was fine and tought the spider to fly... ... read more

December 2nd 2008

Today we have realised how far the distances are going North of Perth - very long and borring roads!! Found the only campsite in the area called "the Pinnacles Caravan park". It is right on the beach - literally! We then went to see The Pinnacles in the Nambung National Park. These are thousands of limestone pillars in amoungst the sand dunes. No-one really knows why there are so many in this one area or what exactly they are. There are a couple of theories but are still being looked into. They have been covered and uncovered many times over the 100 000's of years. The last time they were uncovered was 6 000 years ago, then re-covered, and now re-exposed for about 100 years. We then went back in the evenng around 7 to get ... read more

December 1st 2008

Today we went to Rottnest Island. The name came from a captain who discovered the island. Once landed he thought it was infested with big rats and named it "rat nest island". They aren't rats but "Quokka's", they look like mini kangaroo's! We caught the bus round as it's quite big and we could hop on and off as much as liked. The beaches are all pituresque. We got off at Salmon point, took a really nice walk down and accros Salmon Bay, it was beautifull. The sea is different shades of blue's and green's. Walked up to Wadjemip - the aborginal name for the Island - and jumped on the bus to Strickland Bay and Stark bay. This is where the ship "Mira Flores" sank in 1886 due to reefs. Walked round Geordie Bay and ... read more

Drove up along the coast to Fremantle which is at the river mouth south of Perth. Walked along the seafront and booked our tickets to go to Rottnest Island on the Monday. Walked through town and went in to the Fremantle Markets. Realy nice feel about the place, all sorts of crafts, food etc... Then went up to Fremantle prison ( it's now closed - to inmates - !!! But open to the public - in case any of you were wondering!!! ). It was a prison from 1850 to 1991 and was built by the 75 inmates that arrived from the UK in 1850, it took around 8 years to finish the 3 main areas. There is a 3 meter white band that runs along all of the walls in the prison, so the bright ... read more

Went to see the Boltanic rocks on the west side of Bunbury, the book says they are 150 million years old and the sign on the beach says 40 million - so somewhere in the middle i guess!! They are volcanic rocks. Walked up the hill to the view tower, the old lighthouse, that was moved to this point in the 70's. Spectacular view of Bunbary bay! Had a wonder down "cappucino Street" and baught a new book! Chris starting laughing as he found two books called: "The dude's pregancy guide" and "Oh S**t i'm up the duff" !!!!! Then spent the rest of the afternoon walking round and along the beach... Decided that Bunbury is a really nice place and defeintly worth spending a few days there...... read more

Drove to Bunbury up the coast on the way to Perth. The sun is out for good!! woo hoo and it's hot - first day with no rain!!! Went down to the sandy beach in Koombana Bay. White sand - blue sea - clear sky - heaven! Wild dolphins come up in this bay and swim around you... Headed back to the campsite, spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool. Today was a lazy but nice day enjoying the sun....... read more
