Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China February 17th 2010

We woke up early and got some breakfast and then headed to the tourist buses that are always parked at the end of Qianmen Street. We decided that would be the easiest way to get to The Great Wall. We bought our tickets (about 160RMB each I think) at the booth and hopped on the bus. Our tour included the Ming Tombs, lunch, and the Badaling section of the Wall which is the most visited section since it is closest to Beijing and has been completely restored. What we didn't know is that the guide would talk in the fastest, most irritating Chinese possible for all 70 km! I wanted to shoot myself in the head. Or maybe I just wanted to shoot her. She was helpful and since Enis and I were the only non-Chinese ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Olympic Park February 15th 2010

After another lovely breakfast at Sakura Cafe (I think this is where we spent most of our money while in Beijing) we got on the metro and headed to Olympic Park, which required us to change lines about four times I think. It's easy though. The Beijing metro is 2RMB per trip, no matter how far you go, and the maps are excellent. Olympic Park has three stops of its own and its own metro line! I went there with my sister last May, but for some reason we didn't know you could get all the way there on the metro. We ended up taking a taxi part of the way. The metro is easier. It doesn't try to rip you off. When we arrived, we tried to get tickets to see the inside of the ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Forbidden City February 14th 2010

On our third day in Beijing, we finally got up early enough to visit the Forbidden City without being rushed. You could easily spend all day here, but I frankly don't have the patience for that. It is a stunning place to visit, but after a while it just all looks the same. It is huge. And impressive. And extremely well-preserved. Renovations are always ongoing and they are very well executed. The central corridor of the Forbidden City is where government meetings took and place and important people were met. That's not where the emperor's actually lived and spent time smoking opium and having sex with their concubines. Those buildings are on either side of the central corridor, and there are a lot of them! Probably at least 25 on each side. Each room has its ... read more

Well, we tried to get an early start today, but we are not so great at getting up early. Finally we did, and we headed to Costa on Qianmen Street to get something to eat. We ended up staying there longer than planned because we met some Turkish people there! I couldn't believe it! The entire time I've lived in China I haven't met anyone from Turkey, and not only did we meet three Turkish people, there were others in Costa as well! They were really friendly and tried to help Enis with his visa woes. The travel agent in Istanbul who failed to explain the visa procedure to Enis (she was Chinese) was actually in Beijing getting married to her Turkish fiance and she was friends with these three people! So he called her and, ... read more

Enis and I flew to Beijing for Chinese New Year. I checked the weather and I knew it would be cold, but I had my hat, gloves, long underwear, wool tights, thick wool pashmina, heavy wool sweaters, and a bright orange North Face coat, so I felt prepared. And I was. Sort of. Good gravy it was so cold!!!!!!!! And windy! I hadn't been in cold like that in a long time. Our first night there, it was -10C. It got warmer after that though and held steady around -5C at night, and even got above 0C one day. When we arrived, it was already dark and we found our hostel - 365 Inn - with no trouble. They had emailed good directions and we took the airport shuttle bus to the train station, then took ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City January 2nd 2010

I arrived in Ho Chi Minh around 1:30 after my last bus ride in Vietnam. I had had enough of buses at this point. Toilets in Vietnam were actually pretty good - mostly western, mostly clean and stocked with toilet paper and soap - nothing like China where the smell alone will make your pee retreat until you reach the safety of your own bathroom at home. The toilets at these bus stops were pretty bad though. When I arrived, I got a motorbike ride to an area near the Ben Thanh Market and walked around a bit until I stumbled upon the Boss Hotel. I had stayed at one in Bangkok, and this one was even nicer and only 20USD a night! When I checked in, the gal at the desk said that for 25USD ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Binh Thuan » Mui Ne December 30th 2009

After a long five hour bus ride with people sitting in the floor and on top of luggage and between the driver and the front seat, we arrived in Mui Ne, a 10km stretch of beach that was little used and undeveloped until the last 5 years when resort after resort after hotel have blocked the beach so that there is literally no public access. The main road running parallel to the beach is dotted with restaurants and the backs of resorts and hotels that are overpriced, even in low season, and they have left little room for the small guesthouse or bungalow in between. There is still cheap accommodation to be found though, and I got a private bungalow on the water for 20USD a night. I was near the end of the 10km stretch ... read more

After I got in touch with the tour company about my paintings, and dropped my laundry off with the hotel (20,000 VND per kilo. So cheap.) I went for a walk in Dalat. I had high expectations. I was staying two nights here. I walked around the lake and around the town a bit, but the motorbikes made it so busy and so loud I couldn't enjoy it. I was so disappointed! I had a great dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant and went to bed. I hadn't slept much on the bus. The next day I went via motorbike with my 20 year old guide, Pho, who was cute as he could be. For the day long tour, I think I paid 317,000VND or about 17USD. At 8:30 we took off to visit one of the ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An December 23rd 2009

I took my first ride on a sleeping bus to Hoi An. I had never seen a bus like this. All of the seats lie almost flat and your feet rest under the back of the seat in front of you. It was great! I think it costs about $6 for the three hour ride from Hue to Hoi An. We got dropped off in front of a Phuong Hanh Hotel, who also owns the bus. Rooms here were $10 a night and Denis and Linka got a room here, and so did I, but I don't recommend it. I checked in and arranged a 4:30 wake up call so I could take their 5:00 AM bus to My Son Temple and watch the sunrise and miss the crowds. The knock on the door came at ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué December 23rd 2009

I had a pretty sleepless night at the hotel. Actually, I slept like a log until about 3:00 AM. Then my eyes shot open and I was wide awake. There was someone in my room! Eating an apple! It sounded just like someone was eating an apple! Wait a minute. I looked around and no one was there. Then who the hell was eating the apple on the desk? AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH! It was a freakin' rat!!!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! Oh my God! I was physically paralyzed. I turned on the light behind the bed and he scampered off before I got a look at him, then I turned on the TV thinking that would keep him away because of the noise. Honestly, if I had seen a snake or a mouse, okay. I would just call the desk and ... read more
