Having left Hole in the Wall around 11am we headed for Maclear via Mthatha, and without any hassles along the way (despite concern on the airwaves due to increased traffic and people in the area due to Mandela’s precarious health condition), we were at Tsitsa Falls backpackers by late afternoon. We arrived to find an old, kind-of-out-of-the-way, farmhouse on a hillside with no-one there apart from a guy saying he was the manager. There were no other guests and the owners (and regular managers) were away on holiday for the week. All good, but it felt a bit spooky as it looked a bit run-down and rustic, there was no electricity and they had pet caracals and mix-bag of dogs who’d had a fresh litter of puppies (the previous night). Needless to say we made a ... read more

We left Port Alfred early to get through to East London for some shopping before heading on to Cintsa in the Ciskei (Cis meaning “this side of”, Trans meaning “across”, the Kei river). We got our supplies and got to Buccaneers Backpackers late afternoon where we checked into a Safari tent for the night. The next day we walked along the beach and almost went for a kayak. Almost, because by the time we got down to the beach with the paddles it was a bit too windy & chilly to head out on the water. The following night we switched to camping and had a braai, which we actually preferred to the safari tent. We were on the road again the next day fairly early and it wasn’t long before we crossed the Kei River ... read more

Having left Camdeboo NP & the Valley of Desolation mid-morning we made our way to the Addo Elephant Park via Cradock to see the place my Great Grandfather lived in when he moved out from Ireland. We found the house in Cradock and took a photo and then went to get some coffee in town. It doesn’t appear to have much appeal as a town these days, but with some imagination we could visualise the kind of place it must have been 100 years ago. It seemed the kind of place that once was a bustling little colonial town set in the Karoo with architecture typical of the Victorian era, where horses would have pulled carts down wide streets, past their shady tree lined sides. Where the big church was central to the day to day ... read more

We left Montagu aiming for the lesser used road between there and Sutherland, which went via Ladysmith and Maitjiesfontein. The road was beautiful and we could see snow on some of the peaks as we came into Ladysmith where we stopped briefly to buy some cheese. From Ladysmith we drove via a dirt road alongside a river stream through some red-brown and tightly folded mountains. On the other side of the pass we were faced with a loooong straight dirt road running back along the mountains and some wonderful scenery as well. The road between Maitjiesfontein and Sutherland is a beautiful strip of Klein Karoo climbing up a pass onto a plateau. As we were winding up the pass we were surrounded by lots of baaaaah’ing as we passed through about 500 sheep coming down the ... read more

After arriving back in Cape Town from Sydney on a Sunday evening with hopes of leaving by the Wednesday, we snapped to it with planning and acquiring the necessary gear before setting off on our adventure. We eventually left on the Saturday (8thJune) having spent a week going from here to there, buying some boxes and gear, getting some curtains made for the van and stocking up on some long life foods and tins for the camping road. Destination numero uno fell into our laps when some spare tickets surfaced for camping at the Wacky Wine weekend in Robertson. We decided it grand to spend the first night at a wine festival so we jumped onboard. Also my brother was going to be there selling his beer from Devils Peak Brewery so that made it a ... read more
