Our last day was mostly spent traveling from Bariloche to Buenos Aires and then catching a red eye from BsAs to Dallas. We did have a few hours in BsAs between flights and airports, so we headed back to the old neighborhood, Palermo Viejo. We did a little last minute shopping and had dinner again at La Cabrerra. Our tenderloin was little over cooked but it was still a nice ending to a wonderful trip. If you are considering a trip that is affordable yet fabulous, then Argentina should be a top consideration. We had an indescribable 2 weeks in this great country. We were able to experience the hustle and bustle of the trendy city and the picturesque mountain escape. This little blog has been overly focused on food but there is so much fun ... read more
Our last full day in Bariloche was also our 3rd Anniversary. We had planned to take a lake cruise but when we got to the boat we found it was sold out. So, we just rode around to some of our favorite lookouts and enjoyed the views. We also visited a few more breweries. For dinner we went to Cassis. It was phenomenal. It was romantic and delicious. There were several courses involved. I had the rabbitt confit and Jo had the patagonian lamb for our main dishes. We had some great deserts and they even gave us a nice chocolate desert and champagne for an anniversary gift. ... read more
We got up and made a 2 hour drive south to the town of Bolson. The drive was through the mountains and we were wowed at every turn. Along the way we had a small scare. We were stopped at police checkpoint and had our car searched. It was really no big deal but a little stressful while it took place. When we reached Bolson we were a little disappointed. This was until we found the local flea market. Bolson is a total hippie town. These hippies support themselves by selling handmade goods. We found one booth run by a family of leather makers. They were very friendly people. We ended up buying several nice belts and bags from them. After shopping, we had lunch at little place on the main strip. We had a large veggie ... read more
We started the morning as usual with delicious locally made yogurt and berries. After getting a nice glimpse of the sunshine on the mountains from our cabin, we decided to go to Cerro Catedral, the big local ski resort. When we got there, we decided to grab some lunch at a parilla. We shared a patagonion lamb chop meal. It was very flavorful. At lunch, we learned that the cable car to the top of the mountain was not running. So, we decided to hike. We spent about 2 or 3 hours walking up the mountain. It was both breathtaking and breath catching!! It was good fun. After coming down from the mountain, we took another loop of the Circo Chico. We got home around 4:30 and had another nice snack of local beer, cheese, olives, ... read more
Sunday we drove the Circuto Chico. It was awe inspiring. We took several photos of mountains and lakes. For lunch, we stopped by Gilbert's brewery. We had the trout and trout raviolli. We also got the chance to drink some tasty microbrews. After lunch, we drove to downtown Bariloche and ate some chocolate and did some shopping. After an afternoon of shopping and mountain gazing, we returned home for a few nice snacks. For dinner, we went to Albert de Boliche, a parrilla. We started with a chorizo sausage and a salad. For our main dish we had the bife de lomo (beef tenderloin). It was the best piece of meat I have ever eaten. All for the outrageous price of $13. ... read more
Saturday was a lazy day laying around the cabin. We got up late and just laid around all day, reading, listening to jazz, watching fox news, drinking local microbrews, eating smoked meats, etc. I built a nice fire and we just enjoyed a nice restful day with the beautiful view from our living room. For dinner, we went to Butterfly. Butterfly is an intimate little restaurant run by a German, an Irishman, and a beautiful Argentine. The meal consisted of a 7 (really 9) course tasting menu. This was probably the most extravagant meal we had ever eaten. The host, Sebi, was incredible and so gracious. He explained every dish perfectly. We had leek soup, trout ceviche, duck confit salad, thai prawn soup, salmon, an encrusted beef, ice cream with cherry strudel, etc. ... read more
After an hour flight delay and a 2 hour flight, we arrived in Bariloche. We met Maxi, our car rental guy, at the airport. Maxi is one of the most laid back people I have ever met. After some trail and error with the stick shift VW, we set off for our cabin. Our first impressions of Bariloche were sort of unimpressed. We were very happy that we had a rented a place 20km south of the city. When we finally arrived at our cabin (www.barilochelakehouse.com), we were more than pleased. The living room has stunning views of the lake and surround mountains. After getting things settle with Jamie, the property manager, we did some grocery shopping, grabbed a quick bite to eat and then came back to get ready for dinner. Dinner was at Il ... read more
For our 6th day in Buenos Aires, we decided to just knock around our neighborhood. We spent the day shopping and eating. After being here a week and traveling around, we are convinced that we stayed in the best neighborhood in the city. We have commented to each other several times how much we would love to live in this neighborhood. It reminds me a lot of Soho/Greenwich Village in NYC. We snacked on pizza at Romario's. It was superb. Later in the afternoon, we had picada, which is a big plate of cheeses and olives. For dinner, we ended up at Bar Uriate, a very trendy Italian cafe. I had the steak and Jo had duck confit with parmesan rissotto. Both dishes were as usual excellent. I have not commented much on the great wines ... read more
For our last day in our beloved Buenos Aires, we again decided to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city and walk our neighborhood. We had the pleasure of showing our new friends, the Commodore's, around. They thought we were joking when we said we would give them the grand tour. They had no idea! :) There are about 75-100 great little boutiques in our neighborhood, Palermo Viejo. It is the up and coming designer district of Argentina. Most of the shops are the designers only store. It was also our day to make the purchases we had been deciding between. We took Reggie and Monchiere to our favorite empanada place for lunch and then we set out. Jo came away with a few new bags and I even bought myself a new leather messenger ... read more
Day 5 was a great birthday. We started out taking the subway down to the Plaza de Mayo. We walked around this area a bit. Then we headed over to San Telmo and had maybe the best meal of our life. A little place called El Baqueano. Diego, Friday night's chef, recommended it. We had the cold soup to start, amazing!... and the grilled fish...incredible....followed by chocolate mousse...exceptional...final price less than $20. After lunch, we taxied over to La Boca, the colorful working district. It was pretty cool but really touristy. We took a taxi back to the subway and then went over to Recoleta Cemetery. For a cemetery, it was a really cool experience. For dinner, we went to La Cabrerra. Incredible steaks! We had a great time at this place. While waiting to go ... read more
