Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Aswan March 23rd 2008

March 21, 22, 23, 2008 Aswan / Luxor, Egypt We arrived early Friday morning ( Good Friday - Not celebrated here in Egypt ) in Aswan from Cairo and went immediately to our ship, Ramadis I, that will take us to down the Nile River to Luxor via Edfu. This morning we took a small boat up the Nile River from Aswan to visit a local Nubian village and see the sights along the Nile near the old Aswan Dam Site. This was an interesting way to spent a few hours before checking into our room on the Ramadis I. The Nubian people of this part of Egypt were probably the most affected by the dams that were built as they lived on the river and had to be moved when the lakes were formed behind ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt March 21st 2008

March 20, 2008 Cairo, Egypt We took our 3 hour + flight from Dubai to Cairo via Amman, Jordan. Not much of a visit to Jordan as we only changed planes. Jordan is becoming a favorite place to fly to to take day trips to Israel and other Middle East locations. A one hour flight to Cairo and our first visit to Africa. Arrived in the evening in Cairo and took what turned out to be another 1 1/2 hour driving adventure through the city of Cairo and Giza to get to our hotel close to the Pyramids. This was comparable to the road adventures in India. We were happy with the driver and transportation but the driving habits here are a spectacle to behold with everyone being very aggressive. We arrived at the start of ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai March 19th 2008

March 18,2008 March 15 we had a travel day to Mumbai via Colombo and spent the night in Mumbai before flying today to Dubai, UAE. We arrived late evening to get a night view of this amazing “Construction Zone” . It is really unbelievable what is going on here in terms of new construction. March 16 - 18, 2008 We spent March 17 and 18 in Dubai and enjoyed a nice city tour and a relaxing afternoon at the pool one day and a visit to The Mall of The Emirates and a desert safari trip the next day. The city tour included a visit to one of the “palm tree” shaped man-made islands that are being developed for high end housing and marinas. There are three of these marina developments under construction along with several ... read more

Asia » Maldives » Male Atoll March 16th 2008

March 11 - 15, 2008 MALDIVES Arrived early in Male, The Maldives and were picked up at the airport by a motor launch from our Resort Hotel for the 20 minute ride out to the Full Moon Resort. WOW !! This is a nice place. Our room is on posts over the lagoon and we literally have snorkeling out the door as we have a short access pool ladder to the lagoon from our patio and from there it is a short swim to a small reef. This is a few days of recharging our personal batteries and we plan to do a lot of just hanging out. As Alice is happy to lounge and relax at the pool, I took the opportunity to do some scuba diving and upgraded my Padi diving certification. We had ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Sigiriya March 10th 2008

March 10, 2008 Mt. Lavinia, Sri Lanka Today was another day on the road back to Mt. Lavinia, on the ocean, south of Colombo, with a stop at a very important Buddhist Temple and a very large golden colored statue of Buddha. We continued to work our way back to Colombo with a nice drive through the county side and small towns and villages. One short stop was made at Sigiriya to check out a very large rock outcropping that was the home to a fortress, on top, that was built by a ruler of the time to house his palace. This looked like a very complicated and difficult climb so we elected to take some photos and pass on the climb to the top. ( Mostly because we were too lazy to try ) This ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Western Province » Colombo March 9th 2008

March 8, 2008 COLOMBO, SRI LANKA After a late night arrival in Colombo, Sri Lanka ( “Ceylon” for us old guys ), we started our day after lunch with a drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka. On the way we stopped at an elephant orphanage that was set up to rescue orphaned or injured elephants. Now the facility has about 80 elephants of various ages up to over 60 years old. Some are babies and some have been abandoned by the herd or injured by land mines in the north of Sri Lanka. The resident herd is also producing more offspring and adding to their numbers. The land mine issue is a result of the 24 year struggle with the Tamils ( originally from India ) who are living in the north of Sri Lanka and want ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » New Delhi March 6th 2008

March 6, 2008 NEW DELHI, India Arrived late last evening In New Delhi, the Capital of India, from Varanasi and checked into the wonderful Shangri-La Hotel. Very nice place. From initial appearances this is a very modern city. Didn’t see one cow on the way from the airport, but it was night and I think the cows go home for the night. ( really ! ) We began a city tour with a drive through New Delhi and a visit to the Jama Masjid, the largest Mosque in India ( could hold 25,000 worshippers ). This mosque was built in the mid 1600’s and was built by the Mogul Emperor Shaw Jahan. ( Yup ! The same Shaw Jahan that built the Taj Mahal to honor his wife ). Took about 5000 artisans about 12 years ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi March 4th 2008

March 3, 2008 VARANASI, India We arrived in Varanasi tonight for our visit. Varanasi is a very special place for Hindus and is a very important cultural centre. With its location on the Ganges River ( The Mother River for all Hindus ) Varanasi is a point of pilgrimage for all Hindus in the world to visit at least once and, for a lot, the place they want to be when they die. Many people move here for that reason . To die here! Apparently you get a direct pass to wherever you want to go if you die in Varanasi. After our check in to our hotel we took a “once in a lifetime” rickshaw ride, with our Varanasi guide, through a few kilometers of the city to witness the nightly Hindu prayer sessions on ... read more

Asia » India » Madhya Pradesh » Khajuraho March 3rd 2008

March 3, 2008 KHAJURAHO, India We went this morning, with our guide for the day, to visit 2 Temple complexes in Khajuraho. These are really spectacular examples of the kind of work that was done in building these temples. These took a couple of generations each to build. Originally in this town there were 85 known temples ( 22 have survived to some degree and the most important have been very nicely restored.) We have often wondered where the country would be if more time and effort was put into living instead of building temples to the thousands of different Hindu Gods, and forts and palaces for the Emperors and Maharajas. Yup !!! All the positions of the Kama Sutra are very evident in the carvings on most of the Hindu Temples. I have began my ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh March 2nd 2008

March 2, 2008 AGRA to JHANSI to KHAJURAHO, India We took an enjoyable train ride today through the countryside for about 2 hours from Agra to Jhansi. On our arrival in Jhansi we visited Orchha Fort ( Yup, another fort ) on our way to Khajuraho. This 16th century fort was another built for a Maharaja and he also built a palace for a Mogul Emperor to keep on the good side of a would be enemy. After a while the forts all look the same. There are very interesting differences in the type of detail ( carvings, finish ) and in the style depending on the time period and the tastes of the builders. Our adventure really took an interesting turn today with a, to quote Alice, "a very stressful 5 hour drive to Khajuraho". ... read more
