Accomodation in Banda Aceh - From: Five-dollar Paradise Found {Darrell}
Hi, What a shame you did not know about Uncle's Homestay in Banda Aceh. Address Uncle has set up a new homestay in Banda Aceh, located only 100m from his old place. It's a 5 minute becak ride north of the city centre... ask the driver to take you to "Jalan Syiah Kuala, di simpang Lambaro Skep" (Syiah Kuala St, at the Lambaro Skep junction". When you get to the simpang (junction), you willl see a side road running off Jalan Syiah Kuala. This side road is Uncle's street... his house is the first one on the right... it is new with a blue roof. Just ask the locals for Uncle and they will point you to his house. Rooms at Uncle's are Rp70,000/with fan, Rp100,000/with AC, Rp200,000/large with AC. Pamela

Travelling in Bali - From: Ubud, the heart of Bali {Cath}
Hi :) We absolutely loved Bali :) When we were there we found it really really easy to travel in. There're a lot of international food restaurants as well as local restaurants, so in my opinion, food availability is one of the best in SE Asia. Also, because Bali is such a big tourist destination, all the transport is really easily accessible (tourist shuttles and the Blue Bird taxis), so it's easy to get around. While we were in Bali, we went to Ubud, Kuta and a famous surf spot called Ulu Watu and loved them all. I think you would like Ubud best, it's the most laid back and is the cultural center of Bali. It was absolutely wonderful! Kuta was fun but a bit more chaotic, Ulu Watu is also really interesting and lots of fun if you're interested in surfing, otherwise, I'd highly highly recommend Ubud. I'm sure you'd be absolutely fine :) When are you planning your trip for? I'm sorry we couldn't get back to you sooner, we've been travelling away from internet for a while, but we're home again now :) All the best with your travels, let us know how they go! Kind regard, Cath

Hey, I'm a senior lady planning to travel to Bali alone for a couple of months in Bali. Do you view it as a safe place for an able body type to adventure on my own? great Manila blog - From: Manila's Hidden Charm {Darrell}
I'm gonna have my Japanese wife read this. The two times we went to Manila, I always have to reassure her that verything is ok, coz she had this frightened look the whole time. Also the ferry-jeep-bus-trycicle routine we Filipinos thought was part of the adventure didn't exactly go well with her, heheheheh. But nonetheless, she loved the warmth of the people and going to the beaches. We've planned a week holiday next March in Boracay, and your blog reaasured me that our family we'll have a great time! Great blog!

Peak season in Boracay starts in late November thru May. Then, the wind shifts to the other side of the island. That's when the main beach becomes a party place. I'm not sure how you'd prefer it, either way, Boracay is definitely one of the bests, if not the best beach in the world!

Aah... Really don't know - From: In search of Bibimbap {Darrell and Cath}
I'm afraid I can't tell you where exactly we went. It's been over a year, and we live in Gyeonggi-do, so we're hardly locals around there. I do remember being surprised at the cost (compared to what we usually pay) but since the taxi driver had told us it was definitely the best in town, we thought we'd cough up. We've tried to make it ourselves a few times, but you're right, it really makes you appreciate how tricky it is to get it right.

Where did you go? - From: In search of Bibimbap {Darrell and Cath}
Was it the place next to the pet store, near CBNU's new gate (shin jeong mun), in Keumamdong? My sense is that that place is considered to be the very best pibimbap. Dolsotpibimbap there is 10,000 won, and they have a 9,000 won pibimbap. Both are fantastic, but I prefer the dolsot. You can get 3000 won pibimbap in Jeonju (elsewhere!), but the quality is inferior. If I don't want to spend that much, I make my own, but it takes a good deal of effort to separately prepare everything to be ready at the right time. It really gives you an appreciation for what it takes to prepare all those side dishes, etc.

Underwater camera - From: Finding Another Paradise {Darrell}
We're using the same Cannon 800IS IXUS digital that we've used for most of our photos. We bought it mainly because it turns on & takes photos really quickly and it has a 28mm wide angle lens. For the dive photos we've been using a Canon dive housing (underwater case) that's good to 40m. Bought it separately a few months ago. The price is pretty steep, but it really has added a new element to our dives. It's also great for taking photos in the rain, snow, beach etc, without worrying about the camera.

- From: I Know... Let's go to Thailand! {Cath}
Dear homematrix Thank you so much for your coment, I meant no offence by the blog entry at all. I have re-read the article and have seen where the mis-interpretation came and have edited the text. Unfortunately we were only in Thailand for about a week and as we feel that that is certainly not enough time to get to know the culture, we spent almost a month in Vietnam and still have barely scraped the surface of understanding the culture, we decided to dedicate the vacation to completing our Scuba course. This being the case, however, meant that we spent very little time in Bangkok. I agree that it's far better to escape the rest of the tourists and backpacker areas and try to discover for yourself what the country is like, and not simply zoot around all the hot spots. We were hoping to achieve this by walking outside Khao San Road, which is where we saw all the homeless people. I was certainly not commenting on the people as a nation, but simply what we saw on the surrounding streets at 2am. Thanks again for your input, we had a stunning time in Thailand, and decided even before we left that we will return again to see and learn from Thailand properly.

- From: I Know... Let's go to Thailand! {Cath}
I find Bangkok's old neighborhoods surrounding Khao San Road much more pleasant than the backpackers' area itself. I see modest or traditional living in general that certainly is not poverty. Almost all of the easy-going locals in Bangkok's old sections have plenty of food, lodging, and proper clothing. They own varying levels of assets and are covered by free government health care programs. Thailand has been an open economy for over a century. Its people are familiar with the sights of westerners and feel no inferior to farang backpackers. If you wish to understand Thais, you have to first stop being obsessed with your material wealth. It cons you into feeling too important despite the fact that there actually are millions of Thais who are richer than average young tourists from the West.

When I drove to work today there was snow on the mountains...helderberg and Simonsberg...absolutely gorgeous...so as you guys move into summer,getting new greens and things...we also have the greens,but with a bit of snow here and there AND of coarse that lovely CT wind with drizzeling raindrops everywhere,getting into every dry spot you might have had this morning..hehehe But beautyfulll like always! The WAAF are doing the Breederivier MTB challenge near Cerest in two weeks and o, I almost forgot...we won the koshuis trofy for last weekends 'trapkar' race and we got 4th over all. Jealousy makes you nasty and am I so jealous. It seems that you are having a fantastic trip so far. It doesn't seem as if much teaching has taken place so far unless I missed some previous posts. Since I am not in South Korea and am ancient I do not have such an advanced brain as you have. You seem to be having a ball and already spending your Wong Millions. If the Harley has saddle bags to fit all the new electronics in then maybe it might not be a bad option. I enjoyed the Hong Kong blog as it reminded me of my stay in between planes. Hi guys sorry for being a stranger for so long I've been wanting to write sooner. I have followed your website closely and am real jealous of your trip. Temted to drop out and join you.... Remeber in the cold war korea was a comunist state and that village you're staying in was probably a training ground for terrorists and spies go exploring for state secrets and torture rooms etc. I'm pretty excited about this year I will finally graduate and will hopefully be able to travel again Keen to meat up with you too especially to introduce my lovely girlfriend eriko yes she has managed to put up with till now. Darrell will be proud of me I'm doing a bio-engineering honours research project on dynamic breathing control for ICU patients. Basically if you are in a comma and you stop breathing my system will be given you air or so is the plan try to avoid ICU at least until i got it semi working. I'm glad to see you guys survived your flights odds were about 50/50. Anymay I plan to stay intouch with these really conveniant comments. Lots of love to both of you. David. so glad to hear that you are safely there!!! It all sounds like sensory overlaod (esp the food). Try not to eat anything that is still alive? Don't get tired, that makes you not enjoy it. We would love to see more about your amazing village, LOVED the Stonehenge (easiest thing to copy that the Brits have done?? or does it have a use?? Do you do teh midsummer dance around it in June?) You will have to keep your sense of humour strictly to the fore if you have to teach investment strategies & key tourist sites to small Korean children!! Remember to mention that you are related to the Queen ... We finished the Argus so much better than I expected! It was lovely day, not too hot or windy. Suikerbossie was the pits but we didn't walk once (except at the Coke stands.) Sometimes riding up those hills seemed slower than walking, but I would set my sights on a large fat man ahead (there always was one or two) & promise myself to try & pass him before I collapsed. I think our final time was an average of what John & I would have done if we had each cycled on our own! We did 5hrs10mins33sec ... and came in the first 24,000!! (which is not so bad in a field of 40,000). I am very proud of us?! And no aches the next day, but ooooooooh my butt was sore at the end. Miss you lots, love your blog!!
