Travelling Dan - Daniel Sheehan

Daniel Sheehan Hey hey!

I finally managed to get my ass in gear and book the RTW flights.....and over the coming months (fingers crossed) I'm going to use this journal to make you all insanely jealous!!

My itinerary is roughly as follows:

Nov 10th - Fly out to Cape Town - spend a few days with family - join the Baz Bus and travel up the Garden Route and West Coast, up to Durban then head inland through the Drakensburg Mountains to Johannesburg.

Dec 17th - Fly from Jo'burg to Sydney....where I will likely find myself homeless through Xmas and New Years because I wasnt organised enough to book my accommodation 6 months ago, as it turns out, everyone else did!! Ooops! Anyone know anyone in Sydney who will take in a loveable rogue for Xmas?? After New Years I plan to rope some people into being my friends and then spend three months travellng up the East coast of Oz doing a lot of lazing on beaches and all the other usual backpacker stuff...

15th March 2008 - Fly from Cairns (via Brisbane) to Auckland New Zealand. Joining the Kiwi experience for about 7 weeks to explore both North and South Islands...and doing every adrenaline sport known to man along the way!!

8 May 2008 - Fly from New Zealand to Fiji where I will join the Feejee Experience bus for 2 weeks of "Fiji time".

23 May 2008 - Fly from Fiji (via Oz) to Singapore. Just over a month to travel from Singapore at the bottom of the penisular up through Malaysia, through Thailand (via all the usual Island parties etc) to Bangkok. If I have any time left I plan to spend a few days travelling North to the R. Kwai and Chang Mai and hopefully ride an elephant if I can find one willing....

25 June - Fly direct from Bangkok to Heathrow where my journey ends......see you all then.xxx

Spent most of the day travelling from Hermanus by Baz Bus to a town called George where a shuttle picked me to take me up inland for an hour to place which is practically impossible to pronounce correctly...Oudtshoorn. I had heard this place was all about Ostrich farms and therefore for some reason had in my head some kind of small hick town with dusty ranches with ostrich running around instead of horses...but its actually a really beautiful and very green lively little town with nice shops and restaurants...quite a suprise. The hostel - Backpackers Paradise - was equally suprising..the na [View Full Entry]

Knysna Bay....
Knysna Bay....
Gloomy isn't it??
Caught the Baz Bus from Wilderness and travelled on up the Garden Route to Knysna. Not an awful lot to say about Knysna as a place...had it been sunny it might have been a pleasant enough stop over but it rained pretty much as soon as I got there and just didnt stop....and Knysna does not have all that much to do...especially when it rains!! The hostel I stayed in (Island Vibe Knysna) was the sister hostel to the infamous Island Vibe Hostel in Jefferys Bay which, as everyone I met told me, was an awesome non stop party hostel right [View Full Entry]

Wilderness

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape
Pulled in to a beautiful little place called Wilderness, which, as the name suggests is a very natural and "outdoorsy" kind of place. The hostel itself - an extremely well run family owned hostel - Fairy Knowe Backpackers - is set around a big old wooden farmhouse and number of newer thatched huts, all nestled in amongst trees and bushes, right on the border of a huge National Park and overlooking a beautiful lake. Even better news was that I finally got my camera charger and battery back from the Baz Bus driver...so the quality of photos should be significantly better [View Full Entry]

Contemplating jumping....

Left Cape Town early morning (Friday 16 November) for my first trip with the Baz Bus....it didnt go so smoothly!! After battling through the rush hour traffic to get out of Cape Town I suddenly realised I had left my Camera battery and charger plugged in back in my dorm room in Cape Town....after begging the driver to go back...making a prat of myself infront of everyone on the bus in the process I was eventually forced to resign myself to the fact that returning to collect it was just not on the cards!!! I later used all my 'travelling wisdom [View Full Entry]

Me before the flight
...Still looking calm
On Wednesday (14 November) - my last day with Judy and family - I put my name down for a Huey Combat flight over Table Bay. For those who don't know....a Huey is a helicopter that was used in Vietnam etc...that has turned into a bit of an icon (see pics) This thing has no doors....you are just strapped into the seats inside! It's so incredibly loud when it takes off or changes direction because it only has two blades so they really cut the air....apparently it also makes it more exciting to fly....! You get taken up and out over [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Cape Town Sunday morning (11 November) and spent my first day with my great Uncle Les who I've only met a couple of times before. He drove me around the centre of Cape Town and showed me where all the tourists head to down at the Waterfront. Cape Town is a busy but beautiful city, sunny but quite windy too. The sight of Table Top mountain looming so large over the city is so much more incredible than you would believe from the photos. Les dropped me off at his daughter Judy's house where I would be staying for [View Full Entry]

Its just gone midnight on the night before I fly so I thought I'd take the opportunity to write my first blog. Im pretty much packed and only now starting to get excited....still can't help thinking I've forgotten something though?? I've been able to contact my family out in South Africa. They are going to meet me at the airport in Cape Town, put me up for a few days and show me the sights. Thats made me more relaxed as at least I'm not diving in head first dealing with hostels etc straight away. Haven't done anything interesting yet....so I [View Full Entry]
