Luang Prabang is an interesting place. Some love it here; while others may find it a bit boring. I think it’s a beautiful place with many nooks and crannies all over! For instance, a few of us girls went to lunch at a restaurant called Utopia. After a walk around local people’s homes to get there (which of course is a tad devastating)… there is a vision of peace and beauty. There are lounge cushions all over an old built bamboo deck (no jumping as you might plummet down into the Mekong). I am surrounded by backpackers of all ages simply reading, writing and having some good eats (YES – some good westerner style food…. Who knew Mango and tomatoes were so good together!). The views were extraordinary from this spot. The area offers accommodations for ... read more

The day was overcast and chilly on the boat along the Mekong River. I utilized 2 blankets and snuggled up in a ball and pretty much napped the morning away. We stopped at a cave temple (Pak Ou Caves). Honestly, this was super creepy as there were 1,000’s of Buddha statues starring at you, but I did light some candles and make a wish with incents. Shortly after, our boat arrives at Luang Prabang. We have time to pee before our bike tour starts of the town. As we know, I have no idea how to ride a bike… wait… I determined I have a fear of bikes! I wasn’t the only one! Our tour guide arranged a tuktuk for 4 of us to do the tour of the town. We stopped at Wat Xieng Thong ... read more

It was an early start as we were heading to cross the Thai/Laos border by boat. As some of our group was hung over and Dean has started to get lazy and doesn’t want to become the bad guy, I definitely started to take it upon myself to start pushing people in the right direction. One person forgot to get stamped out of Thailand upon arrival on the Laos side. We still don’t know what he was doing for 30 minutes while everyone was waiting on line. He smiled and thought it was funny to go back to the other side of the river – I told everyone he had the shits. Anyhow, this was a pretty smooth process considering we have a few Forrest Gump types on our trip who like to drink a ton ... read more

We drove from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. We checked into our hotel before heading to unique hill tribe villages. These were fascinating as I had never seen anything like it my entire life. Most of the people live off little money in these areas. The women mainly make scarves. It takes over 6 hours to weave a single scarf. The other interesting thing was the puppies. There were so many adorable ones running all over the place (and some lying around in the sun). The only problem was they were filthy so it was suggested we don’t try to hold them or play with them. We saw the Long Neck Karen tribe. This tribe includes the women (‘giraffe women’) who have their necks protected by bronze rings. These protect the women against tiger bites as ... read more

After a lovely sleep on the overnight train, we arrived in Chiang Mai. The good news is that we actually arrived on time! I guess this is the same story in all 3rd world countries – you get a 4 hour window of when you may arrive at your stop. The bus was there waiting for our group to bring us to a really nice hotel. This is probably the nicest hotel I have stayed at on any tour. Anyhow, we had about 2 hours to eat breakfast and shower. We headed to Wat Phrathat temple up in the mountains. This is a 300 stair walk up to some very cool looking statues and buildings and of course the monks! What we learned about the monks is they are the closest thing to g-d in the ... read more

I am on my overnight train heading up North to Chiang Mai. The day was spent in ‘touristville’ in Bangkok. This included the Royal Palace and boat rides along the canal. It was hot… very hot. The entire group was sweating, especially that we had to cover our knees and shoulders at the temples. OYE. Most of the boys were wearing jeans and it was tough to look at. After leaving the area, we went on a private boat where we stopped to feed catfish. It was weird, but neat I guess. Following our morning, we had a few hours free time before we had to head to our overnight train. I had lunch with the other 3 Americans on my tour and a Swiss guy. I left once I was done to go to the ... read more

Ahhhh, sidewalks and streetlights finally! What a relief from Vietnam. The last few days flew by. As I was fighting getting sick, I took it easy for the most part. I enjoyed my beautiful hotel and took advantage of the rooftop pool and room service (all reasonably priced). Upon arrival, I took a short walk for some lunch and decided it was time for a manicure/pedicure. I found the cutest place in a shopping center. I felt like I was back at home for a minute as Cyndi Lauper was playing in the background. The next morning, I had a 6:30am pickup. The floating markets were recommended to me by numerous people, so I figured I should check them out. What I didn’t realize is how much traffic there is in Bangkok. We literally had 3 ... read more

Vietnam is a phenomenal country. The landscapes and cities vary drastically. Starting in Ho Chi Minh City was a good look at an overcrowded city that was a bit overwhelming. Heading directly to the Mekong Delta was isolated, peaceful and the complete opposite of Old Saigon. As the rain was super intense in some parts of Vietnam, we completely skipped over our beach/boating part of our trip in the middle of the country. I didn’t even flinch that I would be missing the part of the trip I was most looking forward to – the Cham islands. This was Mother Nature talking here… nothing anyone can do! I was definitely moved by Hoi An. This was a tiny town with lots of personality. I didn’t expect a moment of solidarity at any point in this town, ... read more

My last day in Hue was wet and rainy. I slept straight through the morning activities which including a cyclo ride (where you get pushed by a bicycle in a little cart – like a stroller). Marley came back with a soaked and dirty ass. I am sure it was fun, but being warm and cozy in a soft bed was more my thing. Before our afternoon flight to Hanoi, we stopped at Tu Duc Mausoleum. I have few words to describe this place as I was simply in awe. It was one of the most peaceful and beautiful places I have ever visited. I ignored the rain and took many pictures. I believe the rain actually made the place even more magical and mystical. I tuned our local guide out and wondered around… I knew ... read more

Its official, my sneakers are so soaked they haven’t dried in almost 2 days. My feet have turned to prunes and I recycle the same exact outfit as I only have a few waterproof type things to wear. I almost had a nervous breakdown as I have never seen this much rain my entire life! Thanks to Marley (my roommie); she has talked me off a ledge. My dress fittings didn’t go as well as I hoped, my numerous mosquito bites swelled up so much that I look diseased, Marley (from Africa) informed me one of my bites is a flea bite as it is all vainly and bloody looking – good times! I hate the rain! I hate walking around in it. I hate having wet feet, legs and hair. I hate that if I ... read more
