Traveling Jules

After getting the bug to travel in 2005, I just can't seem to sit still for too long. My last big adventure took me on a 6 month trip around the world, beginning in Germany for a fun weekend and then moving on to Africa for some volunteer work in Moshi and continuing on to visit friends and family along my journey home. It was a great trip. I won't be updating my blog for all my future travels, but that doesn't mean I won't be exploring. Since the 6 month RTW trip I have settled in Boulder, Colorado and am looking forward to a whole new set of adventures exploring the west of the United States. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog and I hope you enjoy reading about my experiences.

I am extremely delinquent in writing this final blog entry but decided the year-end would be a perfect time to sum up my travels and update you on where I am and what my plans are. My last entry was just upon my return to the United States in March. As most of you know, I had put all of my belongings in storage prior to my 6-month RTW trip. Upon returning, I had to make a decision as to where I wanted to live and that wasn't an obvious decision for me. Many of my friends in Stamford had moved on, or just moved. Fortunately for me, many of them moved to great locations that allowed me to visit them during my travels (Singapore, Melbourne, Cincinnati (ok..not exciting, but nice :)). I spent almost 2 ... read more

My time in New Zealand is sadly over, but having heard so many great things about the Coromandel Pennisula, I made sure to fit in a visit before I left the country. With only 4 days remaining I took a ferry from Auckland to Coromandel Town and organized a day to hike the Cormandel Walkway, which is at the tip of the pennisula and goes from Fletcher Bay to Stony Bay. I wish I could post all of my photos here, it was absolutely beautiful. I was fortunate to have nice weather and a lovely English couple to walk with. Along the walk we stopped at a little bay for lunch and decided to search for some shells. I found a beautiful cat's eye shell and then became obsessed with finding more just like it. I'm ... read more

With the end of my RTW coming up, I headed out with a friend to explore the North Island of New Zealand, namely the Northland region. My friend Kat (who I met in Western Australia) is also a scuba diver, so we rented a car and headed up to Poor Knights Island (off Tutukaka) to dive one of the areas Jacques Cousteau named as one of the worlds top 10 diving sites. We dived a site called Tye Die Arch, which was awesome. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of fish and the variety. We saw a huge sting ray and tons of stone fish as well as lots of other fish I won't bore you with the names of. It was one of those times I really wished I had an underwater camera. I ... read more

After traveling around for almost 3 1/2 months, it has been really nice to stay in one place for more than a week. As I mentioned in my last entry, I arrived in New Zealand on New Year's Eve and had a chance to chill on my own before heading south to travel with my friend Paul. We had a great time exploring the north end of the South Island. We visited lots of wineries and tasted some great wines in the Marlborough region. Outside of Nelson we went on an awesome hike along the Abel Tasman Track. It was a 20km (about 12.5 mile) hike that we planned to do in 6 hours. We started at a pretty leisurely pace (taking lots of pictures, relaxing for lunch, etc.) which put us a bit behind schedule, ... read more

Wow, it's already been a month since my last entry (excluding the Newlands update). The time seems to be flying by. A quick warning, this will be a long entry as I have quite a bit of catching up to do. Being this is my third time to Australia in 3 years, I decided to explore some of the areas I haven't been to before, which include Western Australia and a bit of South Australia. I landed in Perth on December 1st with a few weeks to explore before heading to Melbourne to spend the Christmas holidays with my friend (and former Stamford neighbor) Liz Warrell. For those of you unfamiliar with where Perth is located, it is probably one of the most isolated large cities in the world. I think it's actually closer to Singapore ... read more

It's been over two months since I left Moshi, so I thought some of you might like an update on the progress at the Newlands Orphanage. Given that it's a new year, I thought this would be a good time to once again thank all of you who donated, or offered to donate in support of the work I (and many others) did at the orphanage last year. I was pleasantly surprised to receive donations from perfect strangers in addition to my friends and business associates. The power of the internet continues to surprise me! Thanks to the generosity of many donors, not just my friends but the generosity of the other volunteers friends and families as well, the children were able to receive new dorms, new mattresses, new beds for the boys rooms, a new ... read more

Contrasting countries and cities

I have to say that looking back on the past few weeks I can't imagine finding a more drastic contrast between the places I've visited. From crime ridden Johannesburg and chaotic Delhi to a clean, orderly and safe Singapore. It's like going from 125th street in Harlem to Disneyworld. I was only in Delhi for 3 days since I decided to extend my stay in South Africa. I had intended to visit the Taj Mahal but since I didn't organize anything prior to arriving, I didn't have time to make the journey to Agra. The high speed train was sold out and I couldn't imagine traveling 8 hours round-trip just to see a building by myself, even if it is one of the Wonders of the World. In all honestly, I was quite lazy and spent ... read more

Well, as you probably guessed by now...I did make it out of Dar es Salaam. In fact, as soon as I posted my last entry I booked a flight to Cape Town and was at the airport within a few hours. I can not begin to tell you how excited I was when I got to the Johannesburg airport on my way to Cape Town and it was clear I was back in a developed country. For one, my Blackberry worked again and they have a huge airport that has something other than curio shops in it. I got into Cape Town around 10:00 at night and had booked a room at the Cape Town Backpackers at the last minute so that I'd have somewhere to go when I arrived. I was fortunate enough to be ... read more

After seeing the Discovery Channel/BBC "Planet Earth" series I was very excited to see Africa's amazing wildlife in person. I even made my parents watch the entire DVD series when they were visiting me in hopes they found it as incredible as I did. While I didn't have the time and patience of the camera men who filmed that show, I did get to see some pretty cool sights, even though our safari got off to a rocky start. Laurence and I were all set to depart for our safari on a Wednesday morning as planned. Being that this is Africa, things don't always go as planned. As I came out of my hotel room to meet Laurence for breakfast there was an African man waiting for me to inform me there was "a problem". Apparently ... read more

Jambo! ("hello" in swahili) I am quite behind on updating this blog and have so much to say, but will limit this entry to my last week in Moshi. I'm currently in Arusha and flying to Zanzibar later this afternoon after returning from a 4-day safari yesterday. I can't wait to share my safari photos with you, but will have to wait till I get to a place where I can upload my photos. I mentioned in my last entry that I was going on a hike on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. With 20 people on a bus (all from our hostel), we headed to the Materuni village and hiked up to the Kuringe waterfall. It was a great day for hiking and the waterfall was beautiful...and cold! The tour company provided a cook to ... read more
