Traveladdict - Sally Rice

Sally Rice "There is some perverse natural law which makes adversity lead to inspiration. I often wonder why I can't sit in a Paris cafe or a nice Caribbean hotel and feel the travel writing muse. Somehow the lack of running water, the fear of disease and the misery of a straw mat brings us closer to the brink and hence let us feel we are alive."

2 Princes, 9am, 5000m Asia » China » Tibet
Thats how I found myself one morning in Tibet, surrounded by mountains, prayer flags and 4WDs, dancing around to the 80s track '2 Princes' track in woolly hats and flip flops. Beats a 9am in the office. Having said goodbye to Sarah, I had a few more days to kill in Beijing, making the most of fast food little in the knowledge that the closest I was going to get to a big mac was a yak burger. No mean exchange. Remaining on the subject of food long enough to say I also had the most amazing peking duck in the [View Full Entry]

Well I truly know what its like to be famous, I've never had so many people stare (then giggle when you stare back - although you do feel like you've entered some kind of competition when they dont!), take photos of me, ( some more subtle than others), asked to be in photos. You totally realise how it makes the locals feel the other way round and gives me no inclination whatsoever to be famous! I flew into Hong Kong from Bangkok and it pretty much lived up to my expectations - a watered down western version of Asia. Before I [View Full Entry]

Well unforunately the one thing that has really stuck in my mind from Thailand is the bloody rain! Ok yes its the wet season, but I dont think there has been one day when it hasnt rained and my back pack is still smelling of fish from one particular boat trip where it got soaked! I flew from Bali on September 11th to Bangkok via KL, having forgotten quite how awful BKK traffic can be, but finally got the good old Khao SAn Road at about 11 and immediately went out for a well needed Singha with an English guy I [View Full Entry]

Next morning we drove to the port of Padang Bai to catch the ferry to Lombok. In the itinerary it said this took 4-7 hours. 4-7 hours? Thats quite broad! In the end it took about 6 but was a good chance to meet some locals, as I got introduced to some Indonesian music on a boys MP3 player (his favourite Western music was Westlife and Britney worryingly!) whilst I introduced him to the Kaiser Chiefs! But totally the most bizarre thing about the trip was the extremely loud house music they played on arrival into Lembar port. Bearing in mind [View Full Entry]

Welcome to my paradise Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud
...is what I was singing along with as I jumped around in the Indonesian equivalent of a mosh pit with scores of pre-pubsecent Indonesian boys (and a few westerners!) on Kuta Beach, Bali, and for just over 2 weeks I fell in love with the paradise that is Indonesia (cheesy but true!). Forget buckets on the beach and the tuk tuks of Thailand, its all about Indonesia. Ignore the bird flu and claims of militant extremism and just come!I flew into Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, from Sydney, glad to be finally off on my travels again. As soon as [View Full Entry]

In addition to the photos that I've uploaded onto here [View Full Entry]

Sorry it’s been a while since I have added to my blog, have been trying to keep my head down and trying to save money for my upcoming travels. “Trying” being operative word there. I have been working in a new job since the middle of March, for a company called Premiere Global Services, as a sales coordinator. Sounds impressive eh! Its ok (for an office job) people are nice and we all got given chocolate eggs for Easter and I don’t know many girls that would complain about that! I am lucky enough that they are letting me have [View Full Entry]

7th February 2007 Well have been very slack and not written for a while, so thought had better continue with my (slightly rubbing it in at times) story of living in Oz.... Got back to Sydney in time for New Year, stayed with my friends for while, 8 of us in a two bedroom flat sounds ever so rock n roll and wild whereas in was neither, am am fully aware that makes me sound both very English and old! Anyway enough of the moaning otherwise none of you will be reading on. New Year was great, none of that hassle [View Full Entry]

I flew back to Sydney a day before Mum and checked into Sydney Central YHA which was amazing, Mum and I had a double room which was a lot better than a lot of hotels I've stayed in! Anyway had one night out with my friend Sandra before picking Mum up from the airport the next day. That day as it was nice we went down to Bondi and did the lovely beach walk from Bondi too Tamarama beach (where a lot of my photos are from) before having a mammoth all you can eat BBQ and seafood dinner at a [View Full Entry]
