The ESN Introduction ran for three days and did a great job of introducing us to the city. The first day started with an afternoon of meeting people followed by our pre-drink and then our first borrel. The participants included students studying at the HES (my school) and other HvA divisions as well (like social work and others). We were split up into groups and given two coaches. My group's coaches Michele and Linda came over for the pre-drink along with some of the people from our group. We played Yee-Ha and a couple of other little drinking games. Then once everyone was a little tipsy we left for the borrel. A borrel is sort of a Dutch way of networking. It’s when people gather, drink and talk. We got Dutch flags painted on our ... read more

First day at school, but don't worry class doesn't start until next week. We went to school, picked up our id's, had a couple of meetings and then went over to the arena. The arena is where the Ajax play. They are Amsterdam's football (soccer) team, the j is pronounced like a y so it sounds like Ayax. Spent the rest of the day hanging out and bumming around. I ate dinner at Julia and Tamara's where they made some delicious pasta with tons of vegetables. Before meeting everyone for the match, I went to Remi (from France) and Luc's (from Montreal) room to hang for a little before the match. After we all met downstairs and went to the football match. (25 of us or so). It was the coldest night thus far and most ... read more

The last couple of days have consisted of exploring and partying. I went out exploring with Ross and Allison. We made a couple of purchases, discovered our area and the famous Vondel Park. The biggest purchase was our grill! Ross and I would like to formally welcome it to our apartment. Cooking with a stovetop wouldn't have cut it for 6 months, so we went to Blokker and bought a 3 in 1 grill for 25 euro. We felt it was worth the investment. It had a sandwich maker (WOOHOO for grill cheese), a grill (YAY for chicken and saumon), and a waffle grill (we haven’t used yet). The biggest discovery was how awesome Vondel park is. Even in the middle of winter, it's a beautiful park with multiple canals flowing through it. Families are out ... read more

We all met downstairs and headed to MediaMarkt (a Dutch Future Shop) where we bought phones and then continued to Ikea to get some needed accessories for our apartments. Of course, since we don't have a car, getting from Ikea back to the metro and then from the metro home with all of our stuff was exhausting and hilarious. This activity took up much of the day but when the group got back, Ross and I headed to the grocery store to get some food for dinner, we opted for chicken stir fry. It was delicious. Julia, Tamara, Chelsea and Allison came over for a little pre-drink and then we headed out for a night on the town. We took the tram to Leidseplein and then started to walk toward Rembrantplein, another square with some of ... read more

I arrived in Amsterdam the day after a horrific wind storm was the cause of a few deaths and millions of dollars in damage. On the flight I knew nothing of this, however it would explain a lot about the landing. It was like a roller coaster, my stomach leaving the seat when my butt was perfectly stuck to it. In the end we landed safely and the adventure to my new place of residence began. I took the train from Schipol airport to Amsterdam's central station, with my two bags this became an adventure! After getting off at central station I lugged my two bags through the station and onto the number 2 tram. I stood with my bags nervously on the tram, not wanting to miss my stop and have to walk in the ... read more

At 12:30 pm, I arrived at Montreal, Trudeau airport to find out my flight was at 1:10 and not 1:45. This led to a stressful check-in process and a rush through security, luckily I made it with a couple of minutes to spare. The question then became if my bags could travel the distance at the speed I was going. The flight to Newark was uneventful and concluded with a very smooth landing but I was still nervous about my bags. As the plane taxied to the gate and reached its final destination, people rushed out of their seats to get off the plane. I stayed on board and peered through the double layered mirror, with my nose squashed against it as I watched the bags being unloaded. Finally my 2 red bags popped out and ... read more
