This is going to be a hard blog to write because words can´t really do it justice. People say that a lot, and you hear it from the advertising for Antarctica, but it really is true. We boarded our ship, the MS Expedition, on the 13th March, and ahead of us lay a two day voyage across the Drake Passage. The ´Drake´ is notorious for its storms and rough seas. Crossings are usually very unpleasent and its known as the ´Drake Shake´. We however were very lucky and on the way over had the opposite (the Drake Lake). The weather was so good that we arrived in our first port of call half a day early. The voyage over was spent listerning to lectures about the geography, history and biology of Antarctica, as well as bird, ... read more

The bus ride from Buenos Aires to our first stop in Patagonia took 18 hours. It was an overnight bus so when Trace and I went to sleep we were still surrounded by the lush green pastoral Pampas landscape of northern Argentina and southern Brazil. When we woke up we were on the dry, arid, Patagonian tablelands - it was a different world. Our first stop was Puerto Madryn. Patagonia Part 1 - Puerto Madryn, Penninsula Valdes, Punta Tomba and Gaiman Stopping at Puerto Madryn was a necessity as much as an opportunity to visit the World Heritage Site at Penninsula Valdes. Any longer on the bus south and we would have gone mad. We had two sightseeing days at this Patagonian mid point before heading further south. The first day was spent on Penninsula Valdes. ... read more

We arrived in B.A. last Monday and after 6 days of fun, steak, wine, and beer its time to head south. Buenos Aires is a great a city and Trace and I have had a fantastic time here. We arrived tired and exhausted after a 17 hour bus ride to our hostel in San Telmo last Monday and hit the town that night. We went to a percussion show in town called La Bomba. The venue was like something out of Shoreditch but on a grander scale. They packed the place out so the atmosphere was good if cosy! The night kicked on afterwards, when we met up with some friends from Brazil and then met a random Argentinian guy who took us for Pizza! It would be fair to say that he was more interested ... read more

Well we are now in Argentina. We arrived at the Brazilian side of the border in a place called Foz De Iguazu, tired after a night on a bus and needing somewhere to stay. We stayed in town at a cheap little hostel-hotel. After a quick sleep we went out on the town, only to return exhausted at 4pm. Tracy laid on the bed for about 2 minutes before her side of the mattress fell through the bed frame, with her on it. She was OK, but we then had to explain in our poor Spanish to the hotel manager how the bed had been broken. From the looks he, and the chap how fixed the bed, were giving us, they had come to their own conclusion! ***Tracÿ - And we were innocently just talking about ... read more

So after finishing up on Brazil´s sunny coastline, we took three buses (over a period of 31 hours) to a place in the south of the country called Bonito. The plan was to stay two days in Bonito and then spend four days in the Pantanal (a large wetland area on the border of Bolivia, the size of France). The first day in Bonito was all about recovery. The second involved heading out to the Rio da Prata to spend the day snorkling down the river, checking out the wildlife of the area. As you would expect we saw a lot of fish. The big fish (30cm to 1m), most of the time, kept their distance, however the small fish (5cm) were quite happy to come up to you and have a taste. Tracy found this ... read more

Week 2 and its all about Colonial towns and Beaches!! So after a crazy time in sunny Rio we headed off on our travels to a couple of smaller towns and beaches. First stop was a place called Ouo Preto, a small town north west of Rio. This colonial town built up around a number of gold mines in the 16th Century. Its a pretty hilly place, but that meant great photos- see below. We went down one of the mines and it was crampt to say the least! After two days we retured to Rio and went on to a place called Ilha Grande- a large island off the coast to the south of Rio. For the next three days it was all about beaches, sun and sea. Finally, we have now come further down ... read more

So, Finally we get a chance to update our blog - sorry its taken a while but the internet is slow and we have not been able to update photos until now! We flew out at 7am on Tuesday 26th (Australia day) to Rio and its taken a bit of temperature adjustment!!! Gone from -3 to +40 degrees!! We spent our first week in Rio doing all the sights - Cristo Redentor, Sugar Loaf mountain, Ipanema Beach and Samba clubs (we went to a place called Rio Scenarium and it was truly amazing - they had a band which included an 80 year old nana who was still singing!!!). We did a tour of one of the favellas in town, which was a eye opening experience. We are now in Ouro Pretro for a few days. ... read more
