Adam and Geena Fife

Tour de Fife

Since Adam and I first met we have talked about going travelling, now 10 years on and a marriage later, we have decided its now or never and we are finally off!
After a 2 week holiday in Thailand 2 years ago, we fell in love with South East Asia, and knew that we had to return one day to explore and immerse ourselves in as much as we can in this awesome part of the world. A growing fascination with India means we also want to use this trip to experience the challenges and diversity of this fascinating country too.
We have a rough idea of our travel route by country, but are pretty much winging it for between 6 to 8 months (as long as the money will last!).

Well, all good things must come to an end I guess - I just can't believe how fast the last 6 months seem to have gone! And then when I look back at all we have done over just half a year, it seems like we must have been gone way longer! So as Adam explained on the last blog update, we decided to skip India for a few reasons and instead spend a month unwinding in Thailand before heading back home to Sydney. When we arrived in Bangkok from Nepal we did not anticipate how we would feel towards it - it was like being back home already! I remember our first ever trip to Thailand 2 years ago, and how we experienced true 'culture shock' upon arriving in manic Bangkok; the smells, the colours, ... read more

Hi Everyone Sorry it's been a while since our last update but you know we've been busy...... Anyway in our last update we were just leaving Sri Lanka on our way to Nepal via a stopover in India. On paper a fairly straightforward exercise, in reality not so much! A few months ago Indian visa laws changed allowing NZer's and citizens of a few other countries the ability to get a visa on arrival for $50US each. That made things nice and easy for us as we were having to fly from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Chennai, India, then on to New Delhi, India before flying out to Kathmandu, Nepal. As we were flying into and out of India we needed the visa. On arriving in Chennai however we were told it wasn't as simple as ... read more

Hello from the 'teardrop' island of Sri Lanka, which I must say has made quite an impression on us! It takes the craziness of South East Asia to a whole new level and is certainly helping to prepare us for India! The people are really lovely and friendly (even when they are trying to scam us) and make the generally wonderfully hospitable S E Asian's look like they all are all joyless supermarket checkout chicks (no offence anyone). The weirdest thing is, even though Sri Lanka is becoming more frequented by western tourists we still feel like celebrities whenever we go anywhere! We are constantly being stared at and the service and hospitality we are offered is just ridiculously amazing! We have both started playing a little game where when we are stared at by yet ... read more

HELLO! So when Geena last wrote we were in the Sihanoukville in Cambodia. Since then we have made it all the way up Vietnam. The crossing from Cambodia into Vietnam was relatively easy. We got a local bus from Sihanoukville 4 hours north to the capital Phnom Penn, which was interesting! A lack of air con on the bus meant that when we arrived and stepped off the 35 degree temperature outside felt quite cool. Not enjoyable! We then got another bus that was super comfortable and had a guy onboard that handled everything at the border crossing for us. Nice and easy. The bus dropped us in the centre of Saigon and a Dutch guy on our bus showed us a good place to stay. Saigon is an absolutely mental place! There are hundreds and ... read more

Hey everyone, Since we were a bit slack on our last blog from Laos you are now getting another update from a whole new country only a couple of days later! Well, we flew into Siem Reap from Vientiene to meet our friends Dave and Komi. We were pleasantly surprised with the city. It had a great vibe to it, well in the 'Old market area' (i.e. tourist hub), where we were anyway. Lots of boutique shops & market stalls for shopping and an great choice of restaurants & bars. The taxi we got from the airport dropped us off at a decent looking place called 'Angkor River Star Guesthouse' for US$15 a night (all of Cambodia uses US dollars as main currency - the national currency of Riel is only used for small purchases or ... read more

Hi Everybody, Sorry we have been a bit slack - finding decent internet places to upload pics has been a bit of a challenge!!! So since our last update we have zoomed through Laos and got to Cambodia to meet up with Dave and Komi. Our time in Laos wasn't as long as we had hoped but we had a really great time. When we left Pai it turned out that there were 3 other Kiwis heading to Laos on the same van as us. We got chatting and ended up spending quite a lot of time with them. The van ride we met them on was a bit of a mission. We left at 8pm and got to the border town at 4 am where we got 3 hours sleep before being woken up to ... read more

Hello again - this time from the wonderful north of Thailand! Where we left of last time, we had just finished our openwater dive course and were planning our next destination within Thailand. Due to having spent longer in Southern Thailand than anticipated we realised that we needed to get up north to see what we wanted to see before our visa's run out on the 11th of May. Therefore we decided to skip Koh Phangan and the full moon party for now and maybe do this when we come back to Thailand through Bangkok after Vietnam. This will be in a few more weeks so hopefully the situation in Bangkok might be better too. So, decision made, we booked our tickets to take us all the way from Koh Tao to Chiang Mai, via continuous travelling ... read more

Hi Everybody Sorry it's been so long since our last update. Ahem we've had a very busy schedule..... Anywho in our last blog we were in the Perhentians in Malaysia. Quite a lot has happened since then so I'll try to keep it brief. We left the Perhentians and got an overnight bus to the other side of Malaysia to Penang. Unfortunately the "overnight" bus got us in at 3am and we didn't have anywhere to stay. Luckily we met some drunk Germans who were about to wake up their hostel owner to let them in so we sweet talked him into giving us a room for the night. It was a windowless box but it had a bed and aircon so we were happy! We stayed in Penang for 4 days and spent most of ... read more

Well, the last time we updated this blog we were leaving our 'Palace' in Kuala Lumpur and were heaving our backpacks back on (which seem to be getting heavier funnily enough), to venture up through Malaysia. A reasonably comfortable 4hr bus ride took us from the chaotic bus station 'Pudaraya' in KL to the peaceful town of Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands (centre of Malaysia). We had luckily prebooked accomodation as it was a suprisingly busy wee place. We rang Lonely Planets Our Pick place called 'Fathers Guesthouse' and booked ourselves into the more basic option - the Nissen huts'. These were old military huts built in 1956 for British, Australian and NewZealand soldiers. It was a very basic room with a shared bathroom (felt like we were camping), but it was clean with friendly ... read more

Hi guys, Well, we have had a lovely week here in KL, really don't want to leave this amazing hotel and re-enter the backpacking world but needs must! Adam mentioned in the last blog update that this hotel really is a palace, but you might be thinking "what a strange name for such a place?", well it is located right next to the Malaysian Race Course and they are mad about the sport, so the name 'Golden Horses' isnt quite as strange as it seems. They are really proud of this association too, as everywhere you look there are horses; big gold horse statues, pictures on the walls, graphics on menus, tile seahorses in the swimming pool area, frosted horses on the shower door, shampoo bottle shaped like horses, horseshoes in the carpet and tile designs, ... read more
