We all slept in this morning, to rest after the past 3 busy days of touring and our late night in the Vortex. We rendezvoused at the Solarium Bar and enjoyed the bottles of champagne that Tom had. He received one from a stewardess on board our American Airlines flight from JFK to London, and the other he won at the murder mystery dinner theater a couple of nights ago. Carlos put them on ice for us and we sat around drinking mimosas. From there, we decided to try our hand at miniature golf up on Deck 13. Unfortunately, we didn’t get past the first hole when it started to drizzle. Our waiters entertained us tonight with a rousing rendition of “O Sole Mio”. A good time was had by all. We finished up in the ... read more

We had an early 07:00 AM start today. We met in the ship’s theater, for our assigned bus number for the Beaches of Normandy excursion. We usually do not use the ship’s shore excursions, but I had difficulty in finding an available private guide who could meet us in LeHavre and supply us transportation to the D-Day Beaches area. Most companies wanted us to make our own way to Bayreuth, located about 2 hours from LeHavre by car, or 3 ½ hours by train. Things were quite organized, and the groups on each bus were kept to a maximum of 40 passengers. This actually allowed us to spread out and have 2 seats per person in the back of the bus. Tom even had the entire last row to himself, which afforded him the opportunity to ... read more

We woke up to another rainy day with temperatures in the mid 60s. We rendezvoused at the Seattle’s Best Coffee Bar in the ship’s centrum and headed towards the shuttle bus that would take us from Zeebrugge pier, where the ship docked, to the train station for the 15 min train ride to Brugges. The port would not allow the shuttle bus to leave prior to 9:00 AM, which meant we would miss the train at 9:05 AM. We joined forces with Teri and Larry, another couple traveling on the ship, and caught two vans to Brugges for about $7.00 USD each. This was actually cheaper and quicker than the shuttle bus and train option, and left us off in the Brugges old town center. The train would have left us a 20 minute walk away. ... read more

We woke up to our first rainy day on the cruise. Captain Thor reported the day would bring cloudy skies with periods of rain. So, we put on our rain gear and headed into the brand new cruise ship terminal. I went to the information desk and signed us up for the free tour at Gassan Diamonds in the center of Amsterdam. We had to wait a few minutes, but they sent us two passenger vans to transport our group to their factory. There was quite a bit of traffic at 9:00 AM due to Amsterdam’s narrow streets and the rainy weather at rush hour. We were ushered into the reception area and buzzed through a couple of thick glass security doors, before being met by a sales representative. He took us into the work area, ... read more

Everyone slept in this morning after our full day and late night the day before. We spent the afternoon taking it easy by the pool or Solarium bar, with one team trivia session added in. We also tried out a game of pool on the specially designed gyroscope pool tables, that keep the tabletop straight, in spite of any ship movement. It was also a good day to catch up on email. While the computers in the ship’s internet café were quite slow, the wireless access area in the Safari Club was better, if you brought your own laptop. Tonight was one of the formal nights, and we got dressed up in our duds. Tom tried to impress Susanna with his pepper grinder technique. She later surprised him with a birthday cake as the wait staff ... read more

We were already docked at the Hamburg cruise ship terminal when we woke up. It was another beautiful, sunny day, but cooler in the upper 50’s. Billy and I stopped up at the Windjammer Café for breakfast, where Susanna trapped his thumbs under a full glass of orange juice, so she could feed him. We hopped on the $5.00 USD cruise ship shuttle that dropped us off in front of the main town square. Our intent was to catch the double-decker bus tour in English, to tour the city. However, we found out that out of the bus tours that run every minutes, only one out of four were in English. By the time the English speaking tour bus reached us, it was too full to take on any other passengers. Luckily, there was a food, ... read more

A nice, relaxing day at sea today which is welcome after our two busy port days in Oslo and Copenhagen. I enjoyed a lovely massage and wrap at the spa followed by some pool and Jacuzzi time. We attended a fun and informative wine tasting seminar conducted by the sommelier on the Jewel of the Seas. It was in the sunlit dining room, which made a nice place to while away a couple of hours. After resting all day, we headed up to the Vortex to dance and party the night away. Our head waitress from the dining room, Susanna of South Africa, even joined us for a while. ... read more

We woke up to a cool, clear morning and enjoyed the view from our balcony as we cruised past a windmill farm at the entrance to Copenhagen harbor. We docked at Langelinie Pier, which is located a 20 minute walk from the city center. We gathered up as a group and were some of the first passengers to disembark, so we could meet our walking tour guide, Brett, from Copenhagen Walking Tours. We found him waiting for us at the gangway exit. He thanked us for bringing the beautiful weather. He said the past few weeks had been very cool and rainy. We considered ourselves blessed to have such a warm, sunny day. We walked along the scenic harbor front and made our first stop at the polar bear statue. It was here that we ... read more

We began the day with a sunrise arrival in Oslo. We enjoyed room service breakfast on our balcony, and set off for a hike up the trail to Aker Fortress Gardens, for a terrific view of the harbour. The ship docked a short walk from the fortress, making this a great place to start. From here, we went in search of a 7-11 store to purchase a Dagskort Tourist Card for 60 kr for the public transport system (good for 24 hrs). The people of Oslo were very helpful in directing us in how to find one. While at 7-11, we were ahast at the price of a bottle of water. A 1 liter bottle cost $6.00 USD. We hopped on the local tram for the 10 minute ride to Frogmer Park. It is a beautiful ... read more

A wonderful, relaxing day at sea was welcomed by all the passengers today. It gave us some time to re-charge our batteries after the long travel day yesterday. It was a bit bumpy at times, as the North Sea winds kicked up 12 foot ocean swells. Chatty Captain Thor Thorvoldsen did a wonderful job of keeping us updated on sea and weather conditions throughout the trip. We met with a group of about 75 members from Cruise-Critics at the Hollywood Odyssey Lounge in the Royal Viking Crown. During previous cruise critic postings, it was decided that all members should wear crowns and tiaras, since we would call ourselves the “Royal Jewels”. Most of the attendees complied and it was a fun event hosted by the Cruise Director Clo from Cork, and the shipboard group coordinator, Tracy. ... read more
