I’m in Japan and drinking absinthe. What more can I say. I have to say I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here in Sapporo. I can go out anytime I want and meet these beautiful Japanese girls who are presented perfectly. And I can approach them and that night will be fantastic on any level you can imagine. But they are not a serious type of girl. Some time I feel like a tourist attraction. The kind of thing you want to have fun with, but don’t want to bring home to your family or your friends. If I can reconcile myself to that fact. I will have a wonderful time here in the land of the rising sun. Recently, I have taken in to of Sapporo’s most important events, the annual snow festival and the opening ... read more

I can't believe I've been here in Japan for exactly four months now. I can't believe I haven't written anything about it! Perhaps because there are far too many stories to tell. Practically everyday something happens here. And the weekends? Oh my god. I can't even begin to describe them. Last Friday I was out until 6am. The next night I was out until 10am! I am constantly meeting new people. Here in Sapporo I know pretty much all the bartenders, gaijin, and many Japanese girls. This city is very small so you get to know everywhere and everyone pretty quick. I can go out by myself anytime and can be pretty much guarenteed to run into someone I know to hangout with. My keitai, cellphone, is bulging with phone numbers and memories of crazy nights ... read more

Last night I went to my first Japanese baseball game. This guy I knew got four tickets to the game provided by the manager of the home team. The home team around hear is the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. So all I knew was I was about to cheer for a team who loved there ham and wasn't afraid to fight for it. I hopped in a cab in order to meet them at the stadium. I said that I wanted to go to the Sapporo Dome and said baseball while I did the universal bat swinging gesture. We were off and away. Apparently the Sapporo Dome is close to my place. When I pulled up in the evening twilight I could see this futuristic marshmellow looming in the sky. I have always liked the Sapporo ... read more

I'm really digging it here in Sapporo. I've been very busy the past few days trying to figure this place out. I am hardly ever in my apartment because I am constantly going out in an effort to meet new people, both Japanese and foreign. When I am at home I'm usually studying Japanese. I have a TV, but I don't plan on getting it hooked up anytime soon. There is a VCR that plays VHS tapes. Hopefully I can get somebody to tape college basketball games and send them over to me. Saturday morning definitely was interesting. I woke up and walked over to the school. Everything was going great, but when I got into the building the door to the office was locked so I was able to deactivate the security system. You have ... read more

Today is my second full day in Sapporo and I am in love with the place already. I don't even mind how unbelievably hot and sticky it is here at the moment. I definitely haven't left summer behind yet. I'm all settled into my apartment, although my hard mattress has got to go. It hasn't mattered the past two nights because I have been too jet lagged and filled with Japanese beers to care. My apartment is in a great area with lots of stuff to do. There is an array of different entertainment and food options. Right next to my home is a place called Rocky's with a huge multi-story gorilla on the front of it. I am really close to the subway so I can just zip into the city center with no problem. ... read more

As I lie here at 2am in my welcoming room I am aware that from here on out everything changes. You see tomorrow morning at 9am I get in the family car and speed off to the airport. There I will catch a plane to Sapporo, Japan to begin my new life as an expatriate in a land I cannot comprehend at the moment. I haven't set off like this in six years!! I can't believe that everything that I have been working for the past five years has come to fruition. Ever since I got back from 2001 I have been looking to move to somewhere more exotic, somewhere different. I could have left immediately and become a teacher of the English language, but I wanted something more substantial. Something that would give me better ... read more

Dear TravelBlog forgive me for I have sinned. It has been two months since my last entry. I am now out on Long Island enjoying another summer vacation spent by the beach. It has been a little less relaxing then usual with my impending move to Japan getting ever closer, complete with Japanese lessons, and getting myself a clean bill of health before I go. However, once you get out here it is impossible not to get in a relaxed state of mind. The air here is just different. I smell the familiar scents, which is a combination of sea air and woodland sanctuary. It's like I tap into the relaxation from all the past summers. I had wanted to take some pictures at the beach when the sun was shining since I arrived here on ... read more

I couldn't resist adding one last note. On my last night I met this awesome Colombiana and wound up spending my entire last day with her. It could possibly have been my favorite day of the trip. Who am I again? After the two of us finally parted ways, around 5pm, I set out one last time down the main aveneida in Bocagrande to take it all in and grab some dinner. Once again, the colors and sounds rushed past me. But no more were they the senses of the unknown. I had become part of the scene. I felt at home and a rush of a traveler's sense of accomplishment poured over me. I lingered over my food while I savored the humid air. I watched all the people milling about, getting ready in anticipation ... read more

Time has flown on me. I can't believe that tomorrow night I fly back to Estados Unidos, home sweet home. For all you that have followed progress, sorry for not writing since Cali, but my life here in Colombia has fallen into a comfortable routine. I decided to go back to Cartagena. There was a point during my last night in Cali where three tantalizing choices lay out before me. I could go see the big city drama of Bogota, I could return to the Caribbean rhythms of Cartagena, or I could stay and learn to dance Salsa with some people I met and hot Colombiana instructors. This is what is so cool about traveling. Absolutely all possibilities are yours for the taking. You feel like anything is can and will happen. It's a rush. ... read more

I would have to say that this has been the lazy portion of my trip. I have spent all weekend here and done absolutely nothing. That it is because there really is nothing to do around here during the day. I lie around watching TV, listening to music, and taking naps. Luckily this is a great hostel for that. With cool tropical breezes and an open air lounge that makes you feel like you’re on a veranda in amongst the rainforest. My only activity during the day is going to the main area to find some food to eat. The food is delicious and cheap. I just had three empanadas, a pepsi, and a huge ball of meat, potato, and other stuff all fried up for only $1.50. It is funny how a place that ... read more
