FUNNY
Hola Tommy, I am a Colombiana in New York looking forward to visiting my home town of Cali after 18 years. I am researching my city as I know that in my absence the city has changed dramatically. I came across your blog and enjoyed your stories. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your experiences. I am counting down the days until my trip to Cali

Great post! I was just really getting into it and then it cut off. What about the rest of the 5 weeks in China? Id like to know!! Id also like to know, how tall are you? Ive heard so much about shoes and towering over Japanese I need to know... Also, I must say that your insights into the female aspect of many countries is great. Maybe its because we are in the same demographic? Either way, I find I shy away from commenting on this aspect because I know when I write things my friends(female) and family will be reading it- even though the girls make up a fair amount of my time while in other countries. Im promising myself to write more about the girls because of you!

You brought me back to Rio!
Hey, Tommy - thank you for writing about your vacation in Rio. I love to hear of someone's first time in there. I was there for Carnaval, 1992, and I am dying to get back there. My husband is from the south of Brazil (3 hours from Florianopolis, Santa Catarina); so, every time we return to Brasil, we, of course, go back to be with his family. Maybe Rio in 2007. I know what you mean about the Brazilian, girls/women. I felt so insecure at first, but then I realized that it's just impossible to compete with that Brazilian look/attitude/joy of life. That picture of Christo Redentor IS mystical - very cool. I'm glad that the 'shorts' incident is the only brush with danger that you guys experienced. Copacabana Beach seems to be more dangerous that Ipanema. Anyway, you wrote a great synopsis; truly excellent writing skills. Mari Anne

Tom, you should take Boo with you as your personal assistant. On second thought, that's not a good idea. He'll steal the ladies. BA

Life is strange.
I was reading your Vanuatu journal as we are going there in September. I clicked on next journal and found your account of the World Basketball Tournament. I realized that my husband and I were also at these games. It was an amazing tournament and I, too, was struck by the enthusisasm of the supporters. I would get as much fun out of watching them as the game. But, the Olympics are also great to see! Not only Basketball but the Volleyball fans were great. It is a small world when we can connect like this.

right on
i just spent a week in prague and enjozed it very much. didn`t get to sleep before 3am any night, this city never sleeps. the stag parties are only on weekends, during the week it is just locals and lots of cool backpackers if you go to the right places which is easy since there are plenty to choose from. the main tourist district is expensive but it is a short walk in any direction to find something more authentic and cheaper. as for the absinthe i tried it in a creepy atmospheric cellar bar which ws quite an appropriate setting, tho for the price of four shots i could have got a bottle in the supermarket. but the drinking ritual is all important so it was probably the best way to go. drinks are cheap in bars in prague, but it is even cheaper and often just as nice to grab a bottle of beer or wine cheaply from the supermarket or store and sit in the square or a park.

Thankyou.
I've just read your piece and thought it was really good. I'm taking my first backpacking trip to S E Asia in about two months time, and have been really enthused by your write-up. It's great to see other people are open to the interaction with other cultures. I live in the UK, and all the people I have spoken to, friends and family don't seem to understand why I'm doing it, they just think it's a holiday! So, thanks again. Jon (jonrodd76@hotmail.com)
