We landed in Chegdu, capital of the Sichuan province, just in time for lunch. The climate in Chengdu is humid and damp 75% of the time apparently, with mainly cloudy, hazy days. As a result, the local cuisine has been adapted over the years in line with chinese medicinal beliefs to help combat the type of ailments associated with such weather. At least, that is the official line, the unoffical line is that the locals just love spicy food! Whatever the reasons, i was happy! The local speciality, that we had for lunch, is Sichuan Hot Pot. A large steel pot is placed in a hole in the table, a gas flame turned on....and you wait. Half the bowl is filled with a mix of stock and vegetables (for non spicy food) the other half with ... read more

The train journey from Shanghai was infinitely more enjoyable than my first night train experience. There are a number of reasons for this. 1) the train left at 4pm and arrived at 7am, which meant more time to relax before trying to sleep. The Beijing train left at 10.15 with lights out at 10.30. 2) The Air conditioning worked. 3) the berths had more head room, so much that we were able to sit on the lower bunk and talk to each other. 4) I didnt have a cold (i did on the last one). 5) We had a few drinks. Quite a few in fact, and the time just passed so quickly....! So, having arrived early we were given the morning off to sleep of the train journey, before meeting to try the local speciality ... read more

So, we left Beijing at 10.15 pm for our 14 hour night train to Shanghai. I tried to explain to our guide that to travel on a train for so long in England would involve travelling the length of the country and back at least once, but i'm not sure he grasped my point! The night train was a new experience to me, 6 to a berth on three high bunk beds, room enough to lie down and not much more. The train was hot, no air con, loud, and try as i might i couldnt get to sleep quickly. Normally, im out in 5 mins flat, but not on this train. I tried music, i tried reading, i tried counting chinese sheep....nothing, until about 3 am when finally i fell asleep. Only to be awake ... read more

So, here goes.... We arrived early on the 7th, after a loooooong trip, and spent the first day and a half wandering around the city, overcoming jet lag, working out the metro...all the boring stuff you do on the first day anywhere i guess. Then on the saturday, the 9th, we headed to The Summer Palace in the north west of Beijing. I'll spare you the history lesson, but as far as huge, sprawling, former imperial summer residences go, it is an impressive sight! it is set in a huge park, overlooking a lake, and in total comprises around 100 different buildings; halls, bedrooms, courtyards, temples, galeries etc. it served as the summer home for a dozen emperors or so, or the Ming and Qing persuasion until we (the British) with the help of our then ... read more

Hello! We have made it to Hong Kong, and the first leg of our trip - a 21 day tour through China - is now officially at an end. We have travelled from Beijing to Hong Kong, via Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Emei Shan, Chongqing, Wuhan, Guilin and Yangshuo (see attached Map if it works!). We are in HOng Kong till the 4th of May, and we will try our best to fill in all the gaps of the last month or so since we left Europe on th 6th April. We have both time and the means to update our blog a bit more regularly now. The trip was a bit hectic at times, with all our free time taken up with additional sight seeing, washing clothes, meeting up with the group members etc. Also, we ... read more

Hello Everybody (well, HI Mum!) We are now in Xian, home of the terracotta warriors, with very limited internet access again so still no photos im afraid. We have already seen the warriors, and we today we did a bike ride around the city walls of Xian, about 9 miles or so. Tomorrow we fly to Chengdu to go to the panda sanctuary, then its on to the Buddist Monastry of Emei Shan, then a 3 day boat cruise down the Yangtze. Anyway, i promise to do a proper blog once we get to Hong Kong, but i just wanted to let you know where we were, as we have almost no email access, Facebook is blocked in China, and SMS arent working either! So, till then. T... read more

Good afternoon! Just a quick update from surpringly sunny Beijing! we arrived safe and sound on thursday morning after about 20 hours of train, two planes, a bus and lots of walking. Next time someone tells you that the world is a small place, ask them to meet you here! so far we have done lots of wandering around, and we will write something more detailed when we have more time, but so far so good. our first truly chinese experience happened almost as soon as we got off the bus, when we saw a man walking home with his lunch in a plastic bag, lunch in this case being a rather large, and thankfully dead, snake! We also seem to be rather popular with the locals, yesterday at the Summer Palace we were the star ... read more

Hello everybody! After threatening a travel blog for weeks we finally got round to doing something about it! As I write Anja is busy loading her iPod (I'll check there is no Hoff!) and we are generally just ticking of the hours until we leave. We still have a few things left to do - last minute haircut, check all our documentation, double check the train time to the airport, oh and erm, pack our bags of course! Trial packing went well, after a dodgy start where nothing seemed to fit, but fingers crossed by 6pm tonight we will be ready to go! We leave Cologne at 7am tomorrow, heading to Frankfurt Airport, then onwards and upwards to Beijing, via Abu Dhabi! Not sure when we will next be able to update this blog, maybe from ... read more
