In all likelihood my final blog entry. I may try and compile some facts and figures about my trip but the longer I wait to do this and especially once I get back to work the less likely that becomes. The final stop of my trip was Toronto, while not exactly counting as part of my "South American Adventure" it would be an incomplete blog of the trip if I didnt write about the 10 days I spent there. Before I write about all that I did I just want to take this opportunity to thank Katherine, Ryan, and Owen for allowing me to stay at their house and for being such amazing hosts and tour guides. I would also thank their friends for making me feel so welcome in Toronto. My arrival in Toronto was ... read more
Now we really are comming to the end of this trip, indeed the South American Adventure is officially over as I write this from Toronto, Canada, where I am staying with my friends Katherine and Ryan, and their son Owen. In this blog entry I pretty much will cover all my time in Brazil. The just over 3 weeks I had was nowhere near enough to cover what is the biggest country in South America but it gave me at least a taster, even if the amount of travelling I had to do was draining and not really what I needed at this stage of my trip. The last entry in this blog will cover Canada and will be written when I get back to Belfast. Probably when im still suffering from PTD (Post Travelling Depression). ... read more
Greetings from the final South American County I will visit on this trip, Brazil. I have now just over 3 weeks in South America and given that Brazil is the largest country on the continent its going to be a rushed highlights package for me as I hightail it down to Sao Paulo to fly to Canada. Yesterday I flew from Tabatinga on the Brazillian side of the Brazil - Colombian border to Manaus, deep in the Amazon rainforest and a major port city of nearly 2 million, despite the fact it is over 1500km from the sea. The flight over the Amazon was spectacular, a sea of green forest, with the huge river and its tributories cutting through it. Im in Manaus to catch the boat to Belem on the north coast of Brazil, its ... read more
This has been the longest time on the trip I have gone without updating my blog. This has been principally because I have been waiting for something to write about. After over 4 months of being on the move, making a headlong dash from Northern Peru to Bogota, and then having Sams friend on holiday with us I have been glad for a couple of weeks where I havent been moving and have had a chance to leave my bag in the one place, cook a few homecooked meals (the food in Colombia has generally been pretty appalling) and rest. Accordingly not that much has really happened, until the last 5 days where I have completed the trek to and from the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida). Now if you thought because I haven't been up to ... read more
It feels a long time since the last entry though its only slightly over 2 weeks. Its been a different 2 weeks in as much as we have been travelling with Sams friend Cher who came out for a 2 week holiday. This is the first time I have travelled with someone whos only in South America for such a short period of time and is definitely on holiday rather then travelling. What I learned was that it can be difficult to reconcile the demands of what someone wants when they are on holiday to what you want when your travelling most crucially in terms of budget. When your on holiday budget is no object unfortunately when your travelling this isn't the case. To fit as much in to 2 weeks we spent a few days ... read more
If I ever see another bus in my life again it will be way too soon! In the last week we have spent over 60 hours on busses, and none of them could be described as luxurious. We have been travelling at such a breakneck speed to meet Sams friend here in Bogota. Colombia is said to be the gem of South America so I plan to spend over a month here. Indeed I have no plans except that I want to be in Brazil for around the end of June to make my way through the Amazon and down the coast back to Buenos Aires. Despite the fact the majority of the last 10 days have been spent on busses there is still a fair amount to write about. Mancora Mancora is a beach resort ... read more
I´ve had an amazing time this last period since I left Cusco but after all the excitement of the Inca trek and Machu Pichu it does feel that there isnt so much to write about. But here it goes. Paracas I had stayed a few extra days in Cusco to wait for Sam, the girl I am travelling with, she had done the classic Inca Trek, which lasts 4 days and is around 44km. She had booked hers ahead and spent alot more money on it, but had an amazing time. As with so many of these trips, this was largely down to the group that she was with to do the trek. From Cusco we got an overnight bus to Pisco. Now in Peru there is problems with items being stolen from people on overnight ... read more
Well what to write. I have been away from the blog for 2 weeks, and have so much to write about. Obviously alot of it centred on Machu Pichu and the trek I completed to it, which ended up alot more eventful then even I had thought possible. But before I get onto that I will briefly write about my stops between La Paz and Cusco, which centred around Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca Lake Titicaca, stradles the border between Bolivia and Peru and is one of the highest lakes in South America, at an altitude of 3820m, it is 230km long and 97km, but more importantly then those figures it is an enchanting and beautiful waterway. The first stop was Copacabana on the Bolivian side. It is a touristy town but as that meant trout dinners ... read more
La Paz Bolivia as you may have realised from my previous blog entry is a land of strange tourist attractions. Its capital La Paz is no different. Its setting is spectacular at over 3500 meters, and framed by mountains. Arriving into the city is certainly an experience. Unfortunately for us arriving at 5.30 in the morning and being unable to check into our hostel until midday it wasnt a particularly pleasant experience. On arrival we discovered that one of the tourist attractions that is currently on the must see list for most travellers was closed. San Pedro Prison. Basically up until a fortnight ago you could pay a ¨guide¨ who would bribe the prison guards to allow you to enter the prison for a tour. Why visit a prison you may ask. Well, this prison is ... read more
A very busy week. At the moment it seems like im permanently moving from place to place. Since I have left Santiago I havent spent more then 2 nights in any one hostel. Tonight I head to La Paz and will spend 5 days there which will hopefully give me a chance to unpack my bags! I am writing this from Potosi in Bolivia. Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America and the contrast between there and Chile is best highlighted in a description of my last bus journey in Chile and my first bus journey in Bolivia. The final bus journey in Chile took us from La Serena to San Pedro. I travalled Premier Cama, which basically meant my chair, which was like an armchair went back 180 degrees. I was then ... read more
