My wife Faye and I explore as often as we can - we are lucky to have visited Hawaii, Europe and the Middle East recently. Now based at Ottawa, Canada we met on the Haida Gwaii - the Queen Charlotte Islands - off the British Columbia coast.

Several years ago some of my co-workers and I visited Gray Bay, a beautiful beach south of Sandspit on Moresby Island, Queen Charlotte Islands. This octopus was in a tidepool in some rocks, which was draining and soon would be dry as the water receded. We followed him? her? sliding from the tidepool to the each and into the sea - he or she moved almost at a walking pace over a uprising distance. One of the crew's dogs got a little too curious and almost recieved a snoutfull of ink and seawater. Grey Bay is an excellent campground choice for visitors to the Queen Charlotte Islands. In the summer it is comparable to Tofino's Long Beach, without a dangerous surf and no crowds. Services are available at Sandspit, including car rentals and fuel (check ... read more

While we were visiting Rome in 2005 Faye and I were asked by our hotel clerk if we were going to the "free concert". He told us that Elton John would be putting on a show the next afternoon, at the Colosseum. We walked towards the stage on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, arriving 4 hours before the start. It was a hot September afternoon, and even though we were early there was already 10-12 rows of people, with many more flowing in to the area every minute. When the concert started I turned to look behind us, the crowd was immense - we found out later that somewhere around 500,000 to 600,000 watched the show. We were 12 rows back from the stage or so, close enough to actually see what was going on. Elton ... read more

In September of 2005, I was lucky in realizing one of my "must do" travel goals - visiting the Venice Naval Museum. This museum is one of the better deals at Venice, for a small admission you'll gain entrance to centuries of naval and maritime history. Three exhibits caught my attention: The first was the explosive boat, or "Motoscafo da turismo modificato", which was a wooden speedboat carrying a large explosive charge - over 500 pounds - whose operator would have ejected immediately as the speedboat was within self-steering range of a target ship. The operator would hope that his only chance of survival - a small wood float ejected with him) - would be nearby. He would climb out of the water and onto the float to avoid the shockwave of the explosion. The second ... read more

Our adventure for the fall of 2006 was a trip to Petra and Wadi Rum in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. From Eilat we crossed the border to Aqaba and caught a taxi to Wadi Musa. We were hosted at the Petra Gate Hostel during our stay. This hostel is really a hotel, and for a very reasonable price we were treated more as family than as customers by the staff. Unlike the hostel of the same name at Jerusalem, this hostel is highly recommendable. Petra is absolutely fantastic, a must see. The Bedouin are very friendly and happy to share information that you won't find in the tourist guides. The manager of the Petra Gate Hostel, Naser, arranged our return to Aqaba, this trip including an afternoon exploring the desert around Wadi Rum and a ... read more
