At 6am sharp we were already in the city centre of Vientiane and tried to find a hostel for the night. It was almost impossible at this time of the day, as all guesthouses seemed to be full since people usually don’t check out at 6am in the morning. But after breakfast we were lucky and found a nice place which we all liked. In the afternoon, we went with a tuk tuk to the Buddha park outside of the city. The collector Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat brought over 200 Hinduistic and Buddhistic statues to this park so visitors could come and see the human, god, animal and daemon statues. One of them was a giant pumkin which consisted of 3 levels - hell, earth and heaven. We could even climb into it by entering through ... read more

27.07.09 Early in the morning I got on a ridicously crowded minibus from Ban Lung to Stung Treng to get on the next minibus there which brought us to the Laos border. The border itself was not more than 2 tiny wooden houses where we had to pay one dollar in order to exit Cambodia and 2 dollars to enter Laos. We just walked to the Laos side and got on the next minibus which brought us to Si Phan Don (4000 islands) in the South of the country. A little boat brought us with all our luggage to the small island Don Kon. I actually had a ticket until an island called Don Det, but since the rest of the group got out on the first island, the boat driver didn’t feel like bringing me ... read more

23.07.09 During my last days in Cambodia I had to learn that not everything can be perfect all the time. After a great time in Phnom Penh I enthusiastically went to Kratie which is famous for it’s fresh water dolphins and of course I didn’t want to miss them out. As soon as I had arrived to this little place on the Mekong river, I looked for a guesthouse which already seemed quite abandoned when I arrived. The room was big, but already when I checked in I realized that it was not the cleanest place. But the hot water shower convinced me to stay (you can’t imagine how good it feels to take a hot shower after weeks of cold showers… my feet actually got clean again!!) After the shower I was full of energy ... read more

The days are passing by and Cambodia just seems to be full of surprises all the time. Since my last entry I have spent some days in Phnom Penh and was just amazed by the city. I learned so much about the cruel history and I am still shocked about how the years under the Khmer Rouge regime must have been for the people here. To be honest, I didn’t know too much about the country’s history before I came here, but thanks to the visit at the prison S21 (a former school which was turned into a prison by the Khmer Rouge and used as the biggest concentration camp and torture centre in the country) and the Killing Fields (the graves of thousands of people who died) I understand it a lot better now. Already ... read more

Even though I have been in Cambodia for only a few days, I am already fascinated by the country and its people. It is almost impossible to describe the emotional moments I have already had in this country, but from the minute I arrived at the airport in Siem Reap, something special started to happen to me. Even though some things here are similar to Vietnam, nothing feels the same though. I am really struggling to find the right words in order to explain what I have experienced during my last days. 07.07.09: I arrived at Siem Reap’s airport in the early afternoon and the calm and laidback atmosphere just surprised me. Everything seemed so well organized and clean, that even the way from the airport to the guesthouse was already a pleasure. I had enough ... read more

And here is the missing English version: It feels like it has only been yesterday that I arrived in Hanoi, and tomorrow morning I already have to say “good bye Vietnam” again. That means my first month of traveling is already over though it seems like I have only started it. My last days in Vietnam were just brilliant. Together with Cecilia I went to Dalat on the 1st July to spend two great days in the central highlands. Dalat is just as Sapa located in the mountains and therefore we escaped from the heat for those days. But the journey there was quite a challenge! The trip itself did not take 4 hours as we had been told… we actually spent 8 hours to get there. The long drive would not have been that bad, ... read more

Wow, I really need to speed it up a little if I still want to discover most of the places in the South of Vietnam. I have only 7 days left and then I will be already heading on to Cambodia. Where did the last weeks go?? From Hue I took the Bus to Hoi An and the way there was quite okay, even though the roads were bumpy as everywhere in this country. When I arrived, I met right away some people I already knew. And since there were no hotel rooms available in their hotel, they let me crash into one of their rooms. I found it very, very cool and was so happy I had a place to stay so I accepted the friendly offer and put my backpack into a little room ... read more

I know it took me way too long. Sorry for this! Here is finally the English update from my last entry: Time is flying by and I feel finally so happy. I feel really part of the traveller community ;) and everywhere I go, I meet people I already met before. So everything is falling into its place after all. After I came back from Sapa, I wanted to take the bus straight to Halong Bay, but because there are millions of different agencies that offer those trips, we just could not decide. And by the time we found the suitable agencies for us, it was too late and all places on the boat were gone. So I ended up staying an extra night in Hanoi. Good thing I had enough time in Vietnam, so it ... read more

A few days have passed since my last entry. That means I have quite some news since then, so I better start right from the beginning: My last day in Hanoi was rather strange, to be honest. I didn't really feel like much more sight seeing since I had already seen most of the things, it was veeeeeeeery warm and I also knew I would take the night train in the evening where I didn't expect to get much sleep. So I decided to take it very easy. I went from one Cafe to the next one, read in the Lonely Planet to plan the next steps of my trip and slowly wandered through the city. Actually I just started to feel more comfortable about the hectic city and its people when someone tried to open ... read more

Another day has passed and here comes already the next message from me. Yesterday I had quite some problems getting out of bed. First because I had huge mosquito bites, my legs were hurting me and I was not as motived as I was the day before. And second, I didn't sleep too well, because a heavy thunderstorm kept me awake for half of the night. It was pouring like crazy and because of the continuing light flashes I was a bit freaking out. But at some stage, I decided to put my clothes back on and go down to the reception desk to ask whether this was normal. And it was! :) Luckily, the day turned out better than I had expected it. The city tour I did was very interesting and I got to ... read more
