What fun to see the Costa Rica pictures. Based on Ellen's smile with the cup of coffee it was great. Fun to meet up with past friends and see how we do leave a foot print where ever we travel. Hope you all enjoy the rest of your time together. Anna is so very excited to be joining the trip. Linda

thanks - From: Inca Trail
It was wonderful to experience traveling with Tim, Ellen and Kate. Thanks Tim and Ellen for sharing with all of us. The natural beauty, pride of the people who have Inca heritage and amazement at history are well worth taking the time to do the hike. Our guide told us that the oldest person he every hiked with was a woman in her 80s... Thanks for the memories! Linda and Ron

40s all over the place, well almost - From: Waves
The way they sell beer here is not in the usual cans or small 12 ounce (125ml) bottles, but instead in lieter bottles. Yes, that is aproximatly 1 quart of beer for about 1 USD. This one is raised for you Patrick!

Where are you guys ? - From: The Lake District
Hi !! The hippy towns of Argentina look fabulous ! We have added them to our list of places we must visit. Where are you guys we wonder ! We miss you, L ! The weather in Madison is finally nice (nice now means 30F and sunny). Hypatia convinced me (she is quite a good negotiator) to buy her a pink pair of Chuck Taylor's that she won't take off.... and she and Chance have been riding a small roller coaster (so called, but not really) in the living room. Happy chaos as usual ! Love from your Madison family, MCH&C

Hey El & Tim. We got your postcard-thanks! I'm glad you were thinking of us. We're going sledding tomorrow so I'll make sure to think of you, too! I love the pics and can't wait to see you both and find out about your adventures! We have so much snow right now that I can't even see over the banks at intersections, I'm really ready for Spring. Speaking of springs, I hope that water you were drinking is clean.....all I can think about is the parasites you could be picking up-sorry, it's the biologist in me! Miss you, have fun, Glowski

Hi from Madison ! - From: The End of the World
Hi Ellen and Tim, Thanks for the pics and the postcard ! Ushuaia looks amazing. How cool it must be to be there !! Are you feeling OK ? It's been the snowiest winter ever on record in Madison (fact) and perhaps the coldest (not sure). It's beautiful...but we've been home-bound for too long. The kids are great ! Hypatia really loves going to pre-school (she calls these her meetings on campus) two mornings a week and Chance is into EVERYTHING !! We thought the house was baby proofed but he is teaching us otherwise. Tonight is the last lunar eclipse until 2010 so that's been cool to watch. We might get a glimpse of Saturn. Safe and Happy Travels ! Love from here !! MCH&C

Donīt worry we arenīt eating that much meat, much much more than we do at home. There really arenīt many options for fruit and veggies. We have started cooking most of our own food, it seems to sit in my stomach better, plus its way cheaper, and it tends to not be meat. Minus the coupld of asadas we had. We have been told that as soon as we head North into Bolivia chicken will be our only option and the fruits will start coming our way. I hope the cruise is wonderful!! L

I see that Ellen always knows what time it is. :~) You guys are eating way too much meat! Don't they have frutas y verduras in the markets? What about pollo? Although, you don't look like you are gaining weight, but with all the walking you do, you may need all that meat to the energy and endurance to keep going. Thanks for keeping us posted as you move about the continent.

Happy BD & Pictures - From: Photos
TimEllen: One day late, but Happy Birthday to Tim. What a way to celebrate. You guys will remember it the rest of your lives. Did you do anything special (cake, candles, toasts. etc.)? The pictures were emmensely enjoyable. Iguazu Falls really is fabulous. What a stitch to find the NYC casino in San Luis -- the replicas of the Statue of Liberty, Emprire State and Wriggly (right?) bldgs are a neat touch. We know you're not much into football, but our Packers are doing very well in the play offs to date. After being down by 14 ponts in the first 2-3 minutes of the game with Seattle, they came back and whopped them decisively. Next weekend they will play the NY Giants and, then (we hope), on to the Superbowl. Keep up the blogs. Papa/Nana

We did get Tim's email of the 7th. And what's "asada carne"? Carne must refer to meat, but asada? But we can't seem to find recent blogs today. Sure hope all is well. Do you get into Costa Rica? We were talking today about the hundreds (perhaps a thousand or so) of so-called leaf ants we saw there while walking thru a rain foreest birding. Amazing things; going single file -- in an almost perfect strait line formatiion -- across our path with each ant carrying a piece of leaf that was anywhere from 5 - 10 times as big as the ant itself. Their strength is unbelievable. But all ants are a wonder from that standpoint. Think if they were as large as humans. Wow! We had quite a January thaw last week. Still have about 5 inches of snow. The previous snow was beautiful. We had some ideal winter days for snow shoeing. The woods are so beautifully silent in the wintertime, particularly if it is also snowing. Looking forward to the Packer-Seattle play off game this afternoon. Of course the Pack will win. Time for lunch (Saturday). Nana & Papa

curaditos chilenos - From: We've Arrived
(comment titles translates to "chilean drunks") first of all, thanks for choosing chile as a destination. chileans are in some ways the irishmen of latin america. they love their drink and seeing a few drunk men in public is almost normal. the thing is that these drunks are actually very very harmless. chileans just ignore them and you should too. americans especially have a very hard time just "ignoring" people b/c they think it's rude, but that's simply the best advise and what chileans themselves do. second, the kiss you dodged is simply the way chileans meet and then say bye to women (men kiss women on the cheek, women kiss women on the cheek, men shake hands or hug each other unless they're family in which case kisses are common too). if you watch a chilean interview show and there are already 10 guests there when a new person arrives to be interviewed, this person will kiss each and every one of the people present plus the host. same when attending a chilean function. kissing is the norm, on the cheek, and often actually you just touch cheeks and kiss the air with a smooching sound. santiago is THE safest capital city in the western hemisphere next to ottawa canada. the murder rate in chile is 1.7 per 100k population (compared to about 12/100k in the US, 40/100k in colombia, or 1.5/100k for canada or 42/100k in detroit, my city). however, petty crime like pick pockets and opportunistic theft (not watching your belongings in an outdoor cafe for example) is common. you don't need to be paranoid (save that for peru or brazil) and you shouldn't let that get in the way of your vacation. this is mostly a big city issue common to cities anywhere in the world. just be aware of your surrounding and you'll be fine. that said, have a great time. drink pisco and ask your american hotel host where to get pitchers if wine with fruit in it (delicious, especially with chirimoya [custard apple] or peaches). happy trails....

So cool! - From: We've Arrived
Hey guys! This blog is so great! I can't wait to keep reading of your adventures. Tim, don't worry, the longer you travel, the openess will come. You have to de-program your American brain and you'll start to absorb the culture around you. The first night I went out in Greece, I refused to put my coat down in the bar because I was scared it would get stolen. In a couple of months, I was walking home by myself at 3 in the morning because it was perfectly safe, but its something I never would have done in America. Give yourself an adjustment period. But do cary your documents in a safe place! Please. Good luck and best wishes! -Maggie
