TieDyeGuy

Ben

I'm a thespian who loves math. I read when I can (which is tragically rare) do logic puzzles besides sudoku, and climb trees. I probably do other stuff too. TieDyeGuy refers to the fact that on every single Friday since the eight grade I have worn, wear, and will wear tie-dye. It's a fun habit, you should try it. On my travels I will most likely be looking for accents and hand gestures. I like them for some reason.

oh yeah... Oh, and... another car trouble thing from yesterday... I... accidentally didn't close something right... and now the power cord for the electricity basically got destroyed because it was dragging on the road. I felt pretty bad, but my dad told me he almost did it too. Day 5: Faces and Badlands Well we woke up this morning, at around 5 AM, mostly because of this interesting storm. Unfortunately because we were in the pop up trailer we probably didn't have the best protection we could have had for a storm of such magnitude. Of course after mentioning it to a fellow camper he had said "it blew a bit." Yeah, it "blew a bit" enough for my parents to have to hold on to some of the walls to prevent it from bursting open, ... read more

Internet I finally have access to the internet again, so I'm slowly trying catch up. When I'm writing this I'm actually on day 13, but I've been documenting everything in a little journal so I'll get everybody up to speed, and hopefully I won't forget anything. Well day 4 was a rather interesting day so lets continue shall we? Day 4: Car trouble I can't even believe how much could have gone wrong with our car and didn't. First when we are packing up our pop up trailer we find out that the hitch attached to the car... was no longer really attached. The bolt holding it in place fell off, and the only thing holding the hitch in place was pure friction and a wimpy chain. Second We found out that the battery that the ... read more

Houses One thing that I didn't mention yesterday was that as we were walking around a suburb of Chicago (near where Ferris Buler's house was actually) I noticed that a bunch of the houses looked like monsters encroaching upon the street. It wasn't just that they were big, but they all looked like they were leaning toward the street, or sprawled out ready to strike someone on the street. Not as scary as every house being the same, but still striking. Day 3: DeSoto DeSoto was actually the destination for where we slept. We stayed in Chicago for most of the morning and got to see a Bahai temple out of seven in the world. Apparently the Bahai is this newish religion attempting to combine all of the previous religions into one. You know saying that ... read more

Last Oberlin Notes As we were leaving the "obies" I noticed one little phrase that I wouldn't have expected to strike me. I asked our hosts if I could look at a book and the owner of the book said that he wouldn't mind "a mite" where as I know that I would have said "I don't mind a bit." I understand both, and just found it interesting that only two states away, that something small like that would strike me as odd. Please note that I understand that I have my own accent. I will always try to include what I would say to point out my own colloquialisms, as well as those I meet on the way. Day 2: Chicago We passed throught Indiana today into Illinois. One thing that I noticed was the ... read more

Day 1: Oberlin aaaaaaaaand we're off! We had a great start to the trip in my opinion. The scenery was beautiful; there were a couple of barns we passed that said "Chew ___(brand name here)___ tobacco! You won't regret it!" Which I found kind of funny, then also the fact that a whole bunch of firework store advertisements popped up on the border of Pennsylvania was fairly entertaining. I will have pictures, but I don't have the time or resources to do that now. We are currently staying with friends of my parents when my dad used to teach at Oberlin College. Country Accent So far nothing striking, but I have noticed a couple more people with a country accent, but not too many. At a rest stop I realized that there is a slight resemblance ... read more

Before I begin So here's the deal, I realize these things are public. If you have a problem with something I say, I am ready to debate with you about it, but I have a feeling that an innocent travel blog is not the place to do it. I'd really like to be able to simply post this blog for those who are interested, my friends, and so that I can remember because goodness knows I'm probably going to forget stuff. Many of my posts will probably be transcribed from a physical journal I will be taking with me, and I'll put the stuff on the internet that I find interesting. So my focus for most of my trips will probably be hand gestures and accents/dialects, simply because having a focus will allow me to notice ... read more
