We slept in until around 9:30am, then headed out by 10:15 to go to the internet place. We needed to change our hostel in Rome and spent about an hour trying to find the perfect one...we eventually did and quickly booked it before there was no availability (more on that when we get to Rome). Once we took care of business, we could finally head off to see the sites. We started out with the duomo (duomo just means dome, and pretty much every city has one) but decided not to pay the extra fee for climbing to the top. We were starting to run low on cash at this point, and we were also sick of stairs. Next to the duomo was the baptistry, which we kind of got duped into paying for but it ... read more

We woke up around 8:00am, finished packing up, got breakfast at the hotel, and then said a sad goodbye to Venice. We boarded the water taxi to get back to the train station, and then headed to Florence. We got lucky and were able to board the train without waiting, and arrived into Florence around 1:20pm. From there it was a little bit of a hike down unpaved roads with our luggage, and I ended up leaving my luggage with Gajal and Ly to run ahead and check into the hostel. We ended up getting placed at the Giulia guesthouse right across from the Galleria de Academia, which is where David is! It was a cute little room with bright colors and paintings. I guess welcome to Florence, city where the arts fluorished during the Renaissance. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 5th 2008

After a fairly restless night (which I won't go into), Ly and I (and Gajal) finally got ourselves together and headed to breakfast around 8:45am. It was a pretty nice breakfast, we had 3 choices for bread this time (crunchy, croissant, or roll), our own coffee/capuccino machine, juice, and milk/cereal...not too bad. We loaded up for the exciting day ahead and went off to explore some more of Venice. It was about a 5 minute walk to San Marco square, where we checked out the basilica and doge palace there. I had gondola ride on the brain and kept looking yearningly to the waterfront. After some negotiation, we decided to ditch the line for doge palace and just get on the gondola instead. 20 euros per person is almost $40 for a 30 minute gondola ride!! ... read more

On Friday morning we woke up pretty early, checked out of Hotel Demo, and made our way to the train station to head to Venice. We ended up waiting about 2 hours for the next train, and then had about a 2 hour train ride on top of that. We still made it into Venice around 1:30pm. Once we got there, we were greeted by a beautiful beautiful city...Venice is built entirely on water, there are no cars, and everyone gets around on water taxis. I wasn't fully prepared for how awesome Venice would be over the next few days. Our hotel was in a very convenient location not far for the famous Rialto Bridge. The Disney store was actually our landmark for Hotel Caneva which was pretty funny. We checked into our hotel, quickly unpacked, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan April 3rd 2008

We woke up around 7:30am to say a very sad farewell to Claire bear as she headed back to the States. We actually ended up going back to sleep and didn't wake up until around 11:30am. Ly provided a very nice breakfast of jelly-filled croissants and fresh strawberries. For the rest of the day, there were a few more sights to check out and some more shops to check out. We took the metro over to the Sfore Castle, hung out in the courtyard there for a while, and then enjoyed some delicious gelato in the sun. After this, we walked around the city center, passed by some more shops, and at this point, I made a very wonderful discovery: SPIZZICO. A wonderful wonderful wonderful fast food pizza place that had a pretty decent meal deal. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan April 2nd 2008

Since we got into Milan late the night before, this was our first real day in Italy! We ended up sleeping into until really late (around noon) but it didn't really matter because we didnt have too much planned for the day. After we got ready and left the hotel, we chanced upon a really cute pastry shop with delicious looking croissants. We cashed in on some pastries and then got onto the metro to get to the city center. When we exited the metro station, we found ourselves right in the middle of the Centrale Duomo square. There were people everywhere and it was quite overwhelming. Before I knew it, there was some guy shoving corn seeds into my hand and then all of these disgusting pigeons attacking me. There was no real way to ... read more

Another morning, another breakfast of baguettes, jam, and coffee...I am so ready to be done with baguettes, paninis, and anything bread related at this point. At least this was our last day in France and we had better food to look forward to in Italy. After breakfast, we boarded the train to Cannes which was a quick trip from Nice. The weather in Canne was absolutely beautiful, and I could picture the stars here for the film festival. We walked along the waterfront and then sat outside to enjoy some relaxation and sun. After we were thoroughly roasted, we decided to cool off by playing the slots in a casino. And then we remembered that gelato is so refreshing and can also having cooling effects...so two scoops of gelato for me please. When we had had ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice March 31st 2008

We woke up around 9am to catch free breakfast at the hostel. It was a breakfast consisting of toasted baguettes, jam/marmalade, and coffee. But the coffee was sooo delicious because it was actually real American brewed coffee...with cream, sugar cubes, and all the fixings! I had to two cups just because I could. After our nice carb breakfast, we caught the bus to MonteCarlo, which is also Monaco. It ended up being a nightmare of a bus ride, complete with nausea and clasutrophobia. It took us almost an hour to get there, which seemed like forever, and we decided that we were definitely taking the train on the way back. After we had recovered from the bus ride, it was time to check out Monaco! We walked around and window shopped in some of the more ... read more

I was sound asleep when my dreams were interrupted by a loud banging on our door. Crazy Asian man on the rampage again I thought to myself...except he was actually a lifesaver. So unbeknownst to us, there was a time change one hour ahead overnight, which meant that we were now getting up a whole hour later than we had planned. Ahhhh we have a train to catch and luggage to haul! I was so impressed that all four of us were ready and out the door within 15 minutes. We then had to trek our luggage to the metro stop, get on the metro, take it 3 stops, transfer to another metro line, take that a few more stops, and finally exit to the main train station. It was quite a sight, and I really ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris March 29th 2008

We slept in again on Sat morning (I know, we keep sleeping in, but hey, we're on vacation and we're tired) and repeated our breakfast routine of coffee, crepes, and jam. Since it was still Shabbas and we're all good Jewish girls by default, today would be a day of walking until sundown at 8pm. So I put on my nice walking shoes and we headed out for the day. We made the 30 minute trek to Notre Dame from our hostel. And keeping in fashion with how we've been able to find all of our major sights so far, we did a 360 turn before realizing that we had made it. "Excuse me, can you please tell me where the Eiffel tower is?" Go us. Anyways, Notre Dame was absolutely amazing. Im beginning to realize ... read more
