On the Road........In October of 2010 I invited a lady i met at water aerobics to join me at a local fundraiser for the Sorpotomist International of Greater North Kitsap (SIGNK)....there at the live auction was a chance for a 6 night -6 day photo safari to South Africa. Of course we decided it would be great to start the bidding and BAM! we won...... and so began the trip of a lifetime. Special thanks to Michelle- who not only joined me on this adventure, but made it even more incredible with her camera, wit and unquenchable thirst!

Yesterday one of the locals we met said...' in Cape-town just wait and you will get all 4 seasons in a day' .....and today (Saturday) we experienced just that. We awoke to a rain storm that by the time we had breakfast turned into a warm sunny morning...by lunch time it was getting windy and by four o'clock it was cold .... The weather has been pleasant but not warm enough for me..or sunny enough. Of course we leave Cape town Monday when another week of sunny skies starts. Michelle on the other hand is in heaven...she thinks anything above 55 degrees F is evil.... needless to say she is in shorts while I am bundled up in my coat and long pants. We started our first full day in Cape Town with a yummy breakfast ... read more

Soon we were barreling back down the tube to Heathrow and collecting our bags for the last leg of the trip. We checked into South African Airlines and boarded a very packed plane where we would spend the next 10 hours in close confines. Needless to say sleep was not easy, nor comfort. We did get fed but we were so tired we passed up most of the offerings. I wonder if anyone else finds it extremely difficult to use a plane restroom when you are required to have your knees behind your ears....? Morning and arrival into Johannesburg did finally come and once again we were herded like cows into a stockade and led through customs. I think the sour disposition and displeased looks are a trait all countries use to hire their custom officials. ... read more

At the appointed hour we popped up in front of the London Exchange and met our delightful tour guide Corinne. She is actually not a born and bred Londoner but from Australia, and hence why she is in a bright red jacket. Corinne is the founder and owner of "Hairy Goat Tour Company"http://hairygoat.net/ ...her specialty is she teaches you how to use your camera as you explore London's unique sites. We had so much fun and saw so many interesting places around the Exchange, that we barely noticed the cold, ....well barely. We walked up and down many side streets and got to hear about the history of the various unique spots she took us to. The exchange area has many little parks and old churches. Some that survived the bombings of WW2 and some that ... read more

Thursday February 9, 2012.....We landed at 8 am (U.K Time) the next day in London and after what seemed like an hour of wandering through miles of empty terminal, we made our way through customs. NOTE: Either they spend many hours training their agents to look bored and disinterested or they must only hire those who can already maintain a totally disaffected look. In fact we saw one agent who performed a remarkable eye roll and glare when a traveler ahead of us was directed to her desk. Quite amazing really...she was able to make all the passengers in line cringe and shudder. I do believe I saw one or two older passengers cross themselves and mumble a quick prayer to the saint of air travel not to get sent to her. Once allowed ... read more

February 8, 2012.....after 16 months of planning the day finally dawned…well actually the sun was many hours from rising when I left home on Wednesday to meet up with my travel companion. Michelle and I hopped on the Bainbridge Island Ferry to Seattle, towing our luggage and backpacks, and then sped easily to SeaTac in a taxi van. 3.5 hours later we finally left Seattle and started on our way.... Of course the flight delay gave us time for one...or maybe that was two ?? Bloody Mary's.... so the gate changes and boarding may be a bit fuzzy. With the late start, we got to Chicago just in time to traverse the terminal and get right onto our next flight from ORD to London Heathrow. Hungry now (those green bean garnishes don't stay with you for ... read more
