Once upon a time, entrance to the Forbidden City would have cost you your head, today its a much more reasonable £4! The Forbidden City is located behind Tiananmen Square. The sheer scale of this place is phenomenal. Here come the numbers: - 1km long and 750m wide - Built in 1406 and expanded over the proceeding years by the 24 emperors who lived here. - 8,707 rooms - Over 1million rare and valuable objects I paid RMB40 for an audio guide, rather than risk using one of the many people touting as a guide. Its difficult to truly describe this place, which seems to unfold another vast area every time you walk through a gate. Unfortunately many of the buildings are closed to the public and you can only look through windows to see their ... read more

I'm in Beijing baby! I got here this morning after an overnight train journey from Shanghai. I got to the train station early as they are more like airports here and you need to clear security etc. I must say that the trains and meto I've seen so far have been nothing short of superb. Modern, punctual, fast, aircon, spacious and cheap. You can even get a mobile signal on the underground!! Just like the UK then!! I managed to find my hostel fairly easily as it was only a few stops from the train station and then a short walk from there. First impressions look pretty good, free wi-fi, friendly staff and clean decor. I'm paying £4 a night here compared to the £15 I was paying back in Shanghai. I dropped my main bag ... read more

I'm writing this from the hostel, whilst I pass some time until my train this evening. I've got my backpack with me, so don't really fancy trekking round the city. Yesterday I went back to "love spicy" for some more delicious Chinese food. This time I had half the restaurant staff waiting and talking to me. They recognised me from before and were keen to practice a little English. I practiced a few of my Chinese phrases and then pointed to the food, then to my stomach and said Nom Nom! They smiled. Seems the noise you make when you enjoy food translates well in any language. On the way back to the hostel I noticed this girl standing in the middle of the rush hour traffic. I set a long exposure on my camera and ... read more

Like a good boy, i've been getting up early each day, around 7am. Today my room mates were leaving for Korea. Conor and Lou were a lovely Irish couple who have been travelling for 6 months. They've been very helpful with tips for the next stages of my journey in China and have recommended a couple of hostels in Beijing and X'ian. We had breakfast together, along with teapot (not sure thats his real name) who is the hostel's cat, before we said goodbye. I then jumped on the metro to the French Concession (not to be confused with French connection!) Today was a gorgeous day and the sky was clear for the first time since i've been in China. To be fair its been fairly mild since I arrived, its just that you can't see ... read more

In case you hadn't guessed, my last few blogs have been titled after English signs I have seen in China. Chinglish as its affectionately known has whole books devoted to it. Anyway today was a bit of a fail. I went to the Expo site, which had closed just before I got here, to see if I could at least wander around it. Unfortunately the whole area is fenced off and there are workmen taking it down. Shame really as many of the countries had some stunning buildings there. Still I decided to look around the area and ended up in a local supermarket. I brought all kinds of exotic goodies, some of which I could guess at the contents, others were either to bizarre to contemplate (sweetcorn drink... What!!??) or only had Chinese writing on ... read more

I went to bed early last night as I was shattered. I hadn't slept for more than a 1 or 2 hours for the past few days, so as soon as i got back to the hostel last night I fell asleep. Awoke briefly when my room mates came in, chatted to them for a bit and then went straight back to sleep. I woke up about 6am. I've never been much of a sleeper and the 11 or so hours I had must have felt like a week to my body! I grabbed some breakfast, which is free at the hostel. I had some toast and a Chinese soya thing which was deep fried. Tasted very strange!! I then chatted to the receptionist for half an hour. Her English name is Amanda and she studied ... read more

I made it! After a 12hr flight, I'm finally in Shanghai!! The flight over was okay, a little cramped, but I was sat next to a nice Belgium man called Dirk and we managed to waste away most of the flight chatting. I cleared the airport at about 12pm local time (4am in the UK) and was then faced by a bewildering number of signs all of which made absolutely no sense to me. Luckily pictures saved the day and I managed to work out where the taxi rank was and the metro. I didn't want to bottle it on my first day here and just jump in a taxi, so went for the metro option. Luckily I found some nice Chinese people to help me who could speak a little English and managed to work ... read more

Two days to go... fifty thousand things to do!! Okay I'm exaggerating.... its only forty thousand!! I'm started to get exited now and every time I think of landing in China, the adrenaline starts to pump! I'm pretty much there with my packing and have everything I need. I've just been over to see a couple of friends and they've given me a few tips, which will make things a little easier. They're going to be in Thailand over Jan, so it will be great to have a beer or two with them. I've decided to take someone with me. I figure it might get a little lonely at certain points and some company will be welcome. Monkey and I go way back and being a small chap he's not going to cost any extra in ... read more

Well my date of departure is fast approaching. I've brought everything I need now and only have four more jab sessions to go O_o I think i've been fairly savvy about my purchases, but I'm sure when I get out there I will think: what the hell was I thinking :) I've brought a Karrimor 50-70 Global back-pack, which has an integrated day pack and a pac safe to go round it. I've also got myself a travel towel and sleeping bag liner to keep the bed bugs away! I've spent this evening practising a few photography techniques, which I hope to use when I get out there. Mainly HDRI stuff as it should allow for some amazing landscape shots. I also wanted to test out carrying my tripod and the security strap i brought for ... read more

Well its been a little while since my first entry. I don't think I realised how much I needed to just have some timeout and do my own thing. Don't get me wrong I've been busy seeing my brother in Bournemouth, spending some time in the Lake District and catching up with friends, but I've also really needed some time to just veg a little. I've never had more than two weeks off work since I started at Xerox ten years ago, so its been refreshing not having a time limit on when the freedom will end. Anyway a lots happened with my travel plans since my first post. I've booked my flights (hoorah!!) and i've had my first batches of jabs (Boo!). So the plan is as follows: I leave for Shanghai on the 31st ... read more
