I flew into Phuket on the 9th Jan. Its not somewhere I really had on my radar until about a week ago. I'm not sure what to make of it, even after nearly a week there. I wouldn't pick to go on holiday here unless I was single, though parts of it are very beautiful. I guess the closest I can come to describing it is Tenerife meets Pattaya as the beauty is changed by aspects of the latter. I came here to see Melissa for the last time before I head off on the rest of my travels. She was working in the northern part of the island at the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. A noble effort which is working to re-introduce gibbons to the island having previously seen them hunted to dangerous levels. The locals ... read more

Two and a half weeks, 18 days, 432 hrs, however you write it, these past few weeks have flown by. I came to Vietnam buoyed by tales of a country abound with friendliness and charm. I found nothing less. Melissa had left a few days ago and I had some time before I flew out to Phuket to meet her. I had two choices, either stay in Saigon and meet up with Mike who I'd met in Hanoi or head North again to see some of the country we had bypassed. I opted to stay put, and it proved the right choice. Mike arrived early the next morning and we wasted no time in exploring the city. We headed to Ben Thanh Market and spent some time buying some delicious weasel coffee and watching the market ... read more

After 5 hours we arrived in Mui Ne, a beach resort along the Southern coast with beautiful beaches, a surfer vibe and an unspoilt charm. We checked into the Sunny Beach Resort. The room was gorgeous, dark wooden floors, a sumptuous bed and 30secs walk to the private beach. It was late so we headed to a local restaurant for something to eat before heading to the pool for a late night swim. The next day we got up early to watch the sunrise. The sky reached out in all directions lit up in blues and oranges by the warming hand of its helper. We did some impromptu Mui Thai on the beach before heading into the sea for a swim in the warm waters followed by a welcome breakfast of pancakes and a fry up. ... read more

I've been writing my blog for two months now, through great walls to fallen armies. I've seen sights the eye cannot recall and experienced times which I still can't quite comprehend. This last week proved to be the start of a new chapter and I'm struggling to put it into words... So you remember Melissa, the girl I met in Chiang Mai, well on the 27th Dec she flew into Hanoi to spend a week with me travelling Vietnam. I'd met her a few days before following a chance meeting at a Thai BBQ. Sometimes luck smiles on you. We spent two days in Hanoi and we couldn't have picked a more magical place to start our journey. Its difficult to describe its charm or relay its energy. Motorbikes weave and buzz around you, streets become ... read more

I never thought I would wake up on a boat set in one of the worlds most beautiful backdrops on Christmas day... but on the 25th Dec 2010, I did just that. The trip had started on Christmas eve as we cruised out into Halong Bay, a UNESCO world heritage site. Its difficult to describe the majestic nature of this area. The core of the bay is 334km2 and has over 775 kasts and isles. Each the result of over 20million years of the tropical climate carving and shaping them into the spectacular scene we know today. The Vietnamese legend talks of the Gods sending dragons to protect them against the Chinese, spewing jade and jewels into the sea to form a barrier. Areas of the bay were formed as the dragons tails swailed about, carving ... read more

So I've done it. Three and half weeks of ball busting, neck twisting, shin crunching training at the Muay Thai Sangha school. There were times when I thought I should check myself into a clinic, not for wounds, but for sanity of mind! Hmmm decisions, decisions: A month of sandy white beaches, lazy hammocks and cool beers or getting my head kicked in... ... but you know what, I loved it! In the same way you feel about scratching a good itch. Its a pain in the backside, but the reward for doing so can be amazing. There were days when I just didn't think I could ache any more only to realise I could. Bruised shins and bloody knuckles were my friends, early nights and lots of food my code, new teachings and inner strength ... read more

8ft tall and built like a tank I realised that I should have taken the easy option and got him another drink. This wasn't a fight that my training or anything else could prepare me for. The circumference of his foot doubled was the same as his height. He was that big. I didn't want to point out that Balloi was a slightly camp name. It didn't matter that he couldn't speak English, these things have a way of transcending language barriers. As i contemplated my options a huge series of vibrations moved through the ground. He'd taken pitty on me and knelt down to make things easier... ...and so i climbed onto an elephant. An experience that really is too alien to describe. As a child i'd dreamt of flying planes, visiting space and sailing ... read more

So week two and my life has been distilled down to a few key principles: 1. Eat as much as you can as often as you can 2. Train hard, 6hrs/day are becoming 7-8hrs 3. Rest well 4. Repeat steps 1 - 3! I feel like a different person, stronger, faster, nimbler and sorer :). I'm ordering two, sometimes three main courses at each meal and then topping it off with desert and a large smoothie. I actually can't keep up with my need for food to the point where I have to really try to eat slowly. Whole plates of food are hoovered down in minutes. I've stopped eating at certain places because they simply can't cook the food fast enough or in sufficient quantities. My friends and family will know this simply isn't James ... read more

I've just finished my first weeks training and to be frank its been brutal, but by the end of week one i've felt like some of the punches and kicks are falling into place. A little about the school. There are currently around 18 students training. Most of them are regulars who have been coming for years. They return home, save up and then come here to train. Their dedication is almost monk like, living in quiet apartments nearby. Everyone I have met is friendly and wants to help. Not once have I been made to feel a stranger in the school. Those wishing to join will need to have an interview first, only then will the location be revealed. The first three days I felt useless. I was tired from the intensity of the training ... read more

Sunday and Buddha day are rest days at the Muay Thai Sangha. Buddah day happend to fall on Monday this week, so I managed to watch the Spurs v Liverpool game with a few of the hostel guests: Jo, Jonny, Claire, Arni and Agnes. Everyone of them supporting Liverpool! I seemed to be the only Spurs fan in the pub, but that wasn't going to stop me cheering my team on. Great result for us in the end! We stayed out till about 3am going to a few of the local clubs and trying some street food, which as usual was lovely. Sticky rice and bbq'd beef. With beer it cost us 80p (35Bht) each! Monday I went with Helie, Kevin and Jonny to the Tiger kingdom. For about £10 you can go and sit with ... read more
