After ten years working for Xerox, I decided it was time to see the world.
I don't know what awaits me out there, this blog will be my story...

It seems an eternity ago now... some days I catch myself day dreaming of a foreign land. It feels familiar, a past life maybe? Days in the ocean, wandering through new faces, the scent of a new culture. I sense I've been there before... I've been meaning to write this piece for a while, maybe i've been putting it off because i haven't found the time, maybe its because I wanted to leave those memories where they were, maybe, maybe, maybe... Since coming back I've had a number of emails from a whole range of people. People who are about to start their adventure and want some advice about travelling (I'm not sure i'm an expert), some were seeking to understand what it was like readjusting to 'the real world' again. Some were just curious what ... read more

When I started planning my round the world trip, 6 months seem'd like an eternity, 3 months later, its seems like it was a blink of an eye. I don't know what I expected when i booked my trip. Honestly I don't know why I picked the countries I did. I don't know how I made it round in one piece, I don't know... And thats the conclusion I've come to. That there is no conclusion. That this trip raised as many questions as it answered. I don't think I expected to find any answers if I'm honest, but I certainly didn't expect any more questions, and yet I find myself back in the UK as I begun, much poorer, but all the richer for the experiences I had... will always have! And thats the answer, ... read more

I'd been back in the UK for about two weeks. It had been hard. I realised that my travels were over and worse still I was over 5,000 miles away from Melissa. I'd been speaking and emailing her every day and it was getting harder and harder to listen to her voice without missing her so much. By the end of the second week, I pulled a typical James manoeuvre and said sod it. I went onto skyscanner and looked at flights back to Arizona and within a few minutes had booked a return flight to see her for the month. It meant my poor Mum would see me briefly before I headed off again, but I knew it was something i had to do. The flight over was even more tortuous than I remember the ... read more

I'd not been back in the UK more than two days and it was time to head off to Phoenix, AZ. Melissa lives about 2.5 hours away in Flagstaff a laid back town in a unique micro climate. Surrounded by a desert but at 7,000 feet it has a wonderful feel to it. I arrived into Phoenix airport and was waiting for my baggage when I saw Melissa. We'd spent the last two month seeing each other as travellers and no matter what I always looked at her as if she was the most beautiful thing I'd ever laid my eyes on. When she walked over to me, her smile made me melt and she looked incredible. I'd had all these images of how I would greet her and they all fell appart in an instant. ... read more

Chiang Mai, where my travels changed course and my journey changed direction. As Winston Churchill once said: This is not the end, its not the beginning of the end, but it is perhaps the end of the beginning. We arrived in Chiang Mai after a long day. The journey from Kho Lanta to Chiang Mai had taken us over 10hrs, five of them in the form of a mini bus to Phuket. Still it was good to be back home, because thats exactly how Melissa and I felt about coming here again. Amongst a pattern of chaos, moving from one place to the next, Chiang Mai was the familiar unfamiliar. Somewhere we could relax and reminisce. We checked into MD house, which was just a stones throw away from where Melissa and I had both stayed ... read more

...So I got to Auckland airport. Jo had been a great host once again and driven me to the airport at 4:30am! I went to check in and was asked for my flight ticket out of Thailand as my ticket was one way. I explained I didn't have one and that I was currently trying to rearrange my flight from Auckland to originate from Bangkok. I had never been asked about this on my previous two trips to Thailand and know that you can get a 15 day visa even if you arrive via a land port. In the end they let me board and I flew into Brisbane. I had to get another boarding pass here and waited and waited for the desk to open. 1hr before the flight was due to leave they opened ... read more

When I first planned my trip, New Zealand was the first country on my list. I'd seen so many amazing pictures from its beautiful make-up and my good friend Jo lives there, what wasn't to like. So on the 31st Jan 2011 I flew from Singapore to Auckland to take my first breaths of this foreign land and view its beauty with my own eyes. I don't believe in God, but few can argue that such a beautiful sculpture could form in the South seas without some form of divine intervention. I arrived in Auckland and for the first time on my travels was greeted by a friendly face. Four friendly faces actually. Jo had brought three of her friends kids to meet me and it was a welcome change to arriving bewildered and lost on ... read more

I came to Singapore as the final stop in Asia before departing to NZ. I'd hoped that two days would be enough to explore the country a little and meet up with a work colleague. Little did I know that it was going to rain cats and dogs for two days solid. It was ridiculous. So I didn't get to explore much, but I did get to meet up with my colleague who I used to work with in the UK. Zohdy had moved to Singapore 7 months ago and had said to get in contact if I was going to be near by. So I met up with him and his family for an evening on Sentosa Island. They had just opened up a new boardwalk allowing you to walk to the Island. Apparently 10 ... read more

My next stop i'd been looking forward to for a while. I hadn't seen Ali for a few years and was excited we were going to be able to catch up at long last having talked about it for months. I arrived in KL only to find that Air Asia had lost my backpack. Luckily I always keep my valuables with me, so my camera, laptop etc. were safe, but my under crackers and weasel coffee were god knows where! Still I headed to KL Sentral to meet Ali. He hadn't changed a bit. Still the cheeky chappy he always has been. I got to his place, right in the centre of KL, and was promptly given a pint of JD and coke! Nice welcome! A few quick games of Halo (first time i've even seen ... read more

So from Phuket to Pattaya for 4 days to meet up with a couple of mates from the UK who are out here on holiday. Thailand has a reputation as a sex tourist destination, which is really unfair for the majority of it. Its a beautiful country with lots to offer, but it does have a darker underbelly, which makes Pattaya the nipple! :) I was struggling with how to title this blog, so I went with my friend 's suggestion:) I knew what to expect when I got here. My friends had seen to that with the loan of a book called Money still number one. Its a great read if you're thinking of coming here. As the title suggests Pattaya is very good at extracting cash from you. Its fairly expensive at almost UK ... read more
