Jack had meetings all day, so I headed back to Tel Aviv by train to go the the Art Museum and the Port. Traveling by train in Israel is easy and cheap. A round trip ticket from Haifa to Tel Aviv is 53 schekels or $15 and only takes an hour. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is wonderful. There was a huge exhibit (159 photos) of Yossi Breger - "And there was evening And there was morning, One Day". It was terrific and I was sorry that Jack wasn't with me. They also have a small, but very high quality collection of paintings from the Impressionist period through today. There were some wonderful paintings by artists I had never heard of, Alexander Archipenko, Max Pechstien and Keevan Dongen. There was a pen and ink collection ... read more

Jack took the day off and we went to Jerusalem. The drive took longer than we expected because of traffic and more importantly because they don’t believe in street signs in Israel. When you get to an intersection you will see signs that point to the neighborhoods that a road may lead to and conveniently not give you the name of the street. Since the maps have street names, the signs are very little help. Also, Jerusalem is built on hills so there are no streets that are straight, parallel of take you directly from one major point of interest to another. We had planned to go to Yad Vashem first, but before we know it we were heading to the Old City. We parked at the Damascus Gate which is between the Christian and Muslim ... read more

This morning after sleeping in a comfortable bed, I had a long shower and then a beautiful breakfast with cappuccino. I had gotten used to Turkish coffee and while I'll continue to drink it at home, it can't compete with cappuccino. Jack had meetings, so I went for a walk. The only activity available in walking distance was the Educational Zoo, so I visited the monkeys, tigers, lions and ring-tailed lemurs. The "educational" signs were all in Hebrew, Arabic and English. Haifa is the city with the best relationship between Jews and Arabs. I met Jack and Si, the head of Jewish Family and Children Services of Greater Boston, for a tour of the Bahai Gardens at noon. The gardens were built to honor the first prophet of the religion. There are about 6 million members ... read more

Our day started out uneventfully. As I had been warned breakfast was pretty sketchy. Since so many soldiers leave the base for Shabbat, the food in the main dining room becomes scarce by Thursday. We had a short work morning and them went back to change into civilian clothes and pack. At 11:30 we regrouped in the warehouse for a departure ceremony. All the veterans commented that this was the first time they had ever participated in a departure ceremony of any type. The solders set up tables in the warehouse with tablecloths, fruit, cookies and small glasses of what I think was wine. The officer responsible for administration at the base came and gave a very touching speech thanking us for coming. He stressed that the soldiers on the base value our visits because ... read more

We switched work assignments today. Instead of cleaning gas masks which is you do sitting in a circle, we checked kits that soldiers pick up from the warehouse in the event of an emergency or for an exercise. The bags each way about 40 pounds and contain 2 blankets, a kit with a vest to hold ammunition and 2 water bottles, a helmet, a jacket (it gets really cold in the desert at night), 2 pairs of pants, 2 shirts, a cap, a belt and a pressure bandage. Most of the equipment looks like surplus from WW II. The uniforms are Israeli, but the vests and many of the jackets are US surplus with dates going back to 1953. The helmets are straight out of Saving Private Ryan. We unpack each bag and make sure that ... read more

Israel Day 4 Today was a mixed bag. I’ll start with the high point which is the evening entertainment. Our two junior Madrichot were again in charge of the evening. We started with number games translating numbers in to Hebrew. We then moved on to a game in which each team had to put post-its on the various body parts. The teams tied (not thanks to me) since each team missed the word for eyebrows. Moving on we had to play act skits with little cue cards with English phrases and the Hebrew transliteration. The first skit was the contentious father-daughter combination cast in the roles of a buyer and seller in the market. I was picked for the second skit and I was a customer trying to negotiate with a taxi cab driver for a ... read more

Today we got down to work and made great progress. We have 2,500 gas masks that need to be inspected to make sure they are functional and then cleaned and packaged. What makes it feel worthwhile is that there are actually a number of defective gas masks so weeding them out could be important, if they are actually used. I’m working with 4 other people one woman from Las Vegas and three from Manchester. What is really shocking is their description of the Antisemitism in the UK. There are community patrols that escort observant Jews to synagogue because people shout and them, threaten them with violence and occasionally beat people up. It is a different world for Jews as compared to the US. We worked from 8 until 11:30 then broke for lunch and returned to ... read more

It was a hectic morning, but by paying an outrageous amount of money to return the car with the tank half empty and my making a couple of illegal left turns, I made to Ben Gurion only 10 minutes late. There was already a crowd of 50 or 60 people waiting. I was assigned one of the first groups to leave. It turns out I was made a part of the small group being sent to an air force base in the Negev. It is the first time that this base has hosted Sar El volunteers. In my group of 13, only 2 people and me are first timers. The rest of the people have been participants as many as 15 times. There are 8 men and 5 women, one man from Poland, one from France, ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Tel Aviv District » Tel Aviv February 26th 2011

Israel is fantastic. I’ve been having a great time with only one minor problem. I can’t seem to drive from Point A to Point B without getting lost. I’ve seen a lot more of Tel Aviv and the outskirts of Jerusalem that I ever intended to see. On the way from the airport last night I got to less than 1 block from the “hotel” where I’m staying and then spent over ½ driving in circles trying to find the actual building. There was construction in the street in front of the building so it was impossible to find until I found my phone and the women who answered talked me in. The “hotel” is Spartan to say the least. There are linoleum floors in the “lobby” and the room is tiny. I think it is ... read more

Last Day Jack left last night. This morning I took the SkyTrain to Chatachuk Market. I know I had vowed that I wasn’t going to go to anymore markets, but I made an exception since this is the largest market in Thailand and the only food it sells is prepared food. There are approximately 15,000 vendors who are there only on Saturdays and Sundays. The market is enormous and I was extremely pleased that after wandering aimlessly for 2 hours I ended up at the entrance where I came in. Most of the vendors sell specialized products. For example, one vendor sells puppies, one sells kittens, one sells baby rabbits and one sell hamster or one sells sneakers, one sells sandals, one sells women’s shoes (not sneakers or sandals) and one sells men’s shoes. Actually, dozens ... read more
