We woke to overcast skies. Maybe I shouldn't complain because we had sun in Cinque Terre and it isn't as cold as Venice, but it would be really nice to have some sun. Anyway, we met Alexandra, out guide at Piazza della Republican 9:30. She explained that the area that had once been filled with medieval buildings that had been erased and the area had been rebuilt in the 1890's after the unification of Italy. Florence was one of the two capitals of Italy and the leaders wanted it to look more like other European capitals. The large arch reminds me of Paris, a different scale but similar nonetheless. This renovation was in the tradition of Florence where the citizens and rulers had great self-confidence and embraced modernity. Especially after the start of the Renaissance they ... read more

When we got up this morning the forecast for Florence was 80 and sunny. Yeah! After schlepping our suitcases up two flights of stairs to catch the right train, about 10 minutes before the train was due, a clerk came rushing out of the station, yelling "to Pisa, track 2 not 3" with great waving of arms. So with the dozens of other folks, went carried the bags down and up again. We got on the first train and within an hour it got very overcast and the forecast had changed to 80% chance of rain by 3 o'clock. Is there a rain cloud following us? We'll get to Florence about noon, ditch our bags and head to the market and the photography museum and I'll change into sneakers and socks and bring my rain poncho. ... read more

We headed out for our hike about 9:30. The first leg of the hike between the 5 towns is from Monterosso and Vernazza. Some guide books say it takes 2 hours and some say 1.5 hours. With tons of stops for photos we made it in 2 hours which is pretty good for folks on Social Security. The trail wasn't that busy or that difficult. In some places the stairs were steep and it was a little tough for Jack's knees. He found it more difficult than Petra, but it probable had more to do with his overall fitness, than anything else. The view are spectacular which is why so many people come here. We arrived in Vernazza to find it was as crowded at Monterosso. ... read more

Today was basically a travel day. We left our hotel early and while waiting for the vaporetto watched the MSC Musica being towed out of the Grand Canal. The ship is 92,000 tons, carries 2,500 passengers and is 16 stories tall. Clearly it dwarfs anything in Venice. Our guide, Cristina, explained the environmental damage ships like this cause. I would agree that ships like this have no business in the Grand Canal and it won't be too far in the future until they have no Venice to destroys. Our first train was to Milan where we able to get a nice lunch to take with us. We arrived in Monterosso at about 3. The area around the train station was so congested that we had to fight ... read more

We woke this morning to a cold steady rain. The high was in the upper 50s and there was no way to avoid walking in puddles...lots of big puddles. We were cold and wet before we even met our guide. There was some miscommunication and we ended up waiting for one another in different places. While Cristina came to meet us we found an outside table under an awning with a heater, cappuccino and a croissant. Since we were at the foot of the Rialto bridge, everything was twice what we were used to paying, but the croissant was head and shoulders better than what we'd been eating. We decided that we wanted to focus on the Biennale. It turns out that in addition to two large central locations, there are exhibits scattered all over the ... read more

Today we were going to head over to Murano and Burano. Murano is famous for glass and Burano for lace. Drat...it's raining. I had booked an 11 AM tour of a glass factory that had some really nice pieces on its website. We left at 10:15 thinking we'd have time, but vaporettos don't travel very fast and we didn't get to Murano until 11:45. When we walked through the door, the salesman was more than happy to show us around. I have a glass piece I love in my house and I remember asking the craftswoman how long it had taken her to make it. She replied something like 4 hours and 20 years...4 hours to make the particular piece and 20 years of training to be able to make the piece. The factories have master ... read more

We hustled over for a 9:00 am tour of the Doges Palace. When we got to the vaporetto stop there was no way to buy a ticket. We'd noticed that trains and the vaporetto system run on the honor system. You buy and validate tickets or passes and then no one ever asks to see them and there are no gates that bar you from entry without inserting a ticket. In desperation, we hopped onboard and bought a day pass 3 hours later so we wouldn't be cheaters. Our guide in the ghetto had complained about "cheaters who don't pay their taxes or transport fares" and we didn't want to be in that category. Can you imagine if the subways and trains in the US ran on the honor system? The Doges were the titular heads ... read more

Today we are on a river cruise from Padua to Venice, where we will be staying for the next 4 days. I’ve learned that if I ever think about taking a Viking River Cruise someone should shoot me. Seen one tree, seen them all. The occasional citing of a palazzo isn’t enough to hold my interest. Plus, I feel lousy, but if I’m going to feel lousy, this is the day to feel lousy. The poor tour guides are compelled to talk incessantly to try to make the trip interesting. Since they have to say everything in Italian, French and English, they can never stop talking. I made if off the boat to the first palazzo that was pretty amazing. The Pisano family wanted a summerhouse suitable for the family’s patron who was elected the 114th ... read more

Finding the Avis office in the daylight was easy and after a short walk we were at the train station. It is ½ hour from Padua to Venice that is just enough time for a cappuccino and croissant. The croissants on the train are better than what you get at Starbucks for 3 times as much money. When I went to buy vaporetto tickets asking which line we should take for the Jewish Ghetto, the ticket seller let me know that it was a five-minute walk so we began our wandering. Even with a map we managed to take twice as long to get wherever we were trying to go than it would take if you knew where you were going. The tour in the Ghetto was through three of the five synagogues in the Ghetto. ... read more

We spend the morning at the market bumbling our way through purchases of fruit that actually smelled like fruit, gnocchi and fresh pasta, cheese, prepared salads. The prosciutto and a chicken stuffed with forcemeat of chicken and asparagus was lovingly sliced as thin as paper and gently wrapped. We had no trouble getting to the Avis office to pick up the car and find a “be back soon” sign in the window. We reminded ourselves that this is Italy, and prepared to wait. Fortunately, we only had to wait a few minutes and we were on our way in a Lancia that Jack hated. We headed for Citradella a walled city north of Padova with dreams of a picnic lunch and a stroll along the top of the walls. When we reached Citradella, we couldn’t figure ... read more
