Wow, about twenty days since my last update and SO much has happened. Ok, so after Broome we continued driving north towards Darwin city, which is on the North coast, right in the middle. It was pretty straightforward driving (oh, I got to try driving manual for the first time. It was a little rocky but the Germans said I did well. They're a very polite people). Not many stops except one memorable one in the city of Wyndam, which is right on the Border between West Australia and the Northern Territory. There was a beautiful water hole, which is sort [View Full Entry]

Ok, so lots has happened - I'm really having the time of my life. uh, where did I leave off. Fabian picked us up, and we drove off. We've been living extremely cheaply, camping for free by pulling off the road and pitching tents or by leaving campsites before park rangers come around. Its been pretty fun. We went to Coral bay, which is famous for it's incredible coral formations (duh). This is one of those things that words can't explain, if you've never seen coral. It's like, these giant underwater flowers of exotic colours, sometimes several meters high, and absolutley [View Full Entry]

Ok! so I'll pick up where I left off. The next morning we met Fabian, and another German girl he had met the day before named Barbara. They are twenty three and twenty five respectively. We had a quick greeting, briefly discussed our intrests to make sure that we were all after the same thing, and when it became clear that we were, we threw our packs into the car and started off. Because Australia is such an enormous country, one of our largest expenses will be transport. Without a car, much of the famed "outback" is unreachable, and this is [View Full Entry]

So we're officially on the road now, away from the love and care of relatives. And so far so good. We were interested in Margaret river region, as I said, but decided to head further south when we read about the "tree top walk" - a fourty foot structure that you climb to gain a new perspective on Auz's famous tingle trees. The closest bus went to a town called Albany. When we arrived in the late afternoon, we discovered that the only way to get out to cette walk was by car - a problem for us minors. So, we [View Full Entry]

I am sunburned. Really sunburned. I just had one of the most exciting days I've had since I've arrived here. I've been having a great time, but it's been pretty comfortable and suburban - going to bars and clubs, getting driven to the beach, etc. But! yesterday Adam and I visited Rottnest Island, which I suppose is sort of Perth's equivalent of Toronto Island. We woke up at seven-thirty (a significant event to us at this point) and took the train out to Fremantle (origin of musician John Butler) where we caught the ferry for a wopping 50 dollars, and that's [View Full Entry]

Perth Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth » Perth City
Perth has some of the most fantastic beaches I've ever seen. It's a coastal city, which means that the beach stretches as far as they eye can see. Despite being so expansive, you can't get the sort of privacy you might expect on a beach in Perth - beach bumming is a very popular activity, and the beaches are well used, even on weekdays during less popular hours. I think I've gone only one day so far without going to the beach for at least one hour. These beatiful white sands and clear, turquoise waters are too alluring. Most of my [View Full Entry]

So right now it's like, ten thirty on a saturday night for you guys. But for ME it's twelve thirty on a sunday! which can only mean one thing in Perth, Australia: a sunday sess (pronounced sesh). Way back in the day, alchohol could only be served between the hours of twelve and four on sundays, and so people would congregate out here for a midday drinking session. This law has long been abolished, but it is still quite socially acceptable, and in fact quite common to head out to the beautiful beaches for a day of drinking as early as [View Full Entry]

other thoughts: has anyone ever seen welsh in print? its quite funny. they have everything here posted in both welsh and english, sort of like in Canada, though I think they take it a little more seriously, although maybe i notice it more because it looks so foreign to me. I'll give you an example (justsomething I see around me): CARDIFF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS UNION - UNDEB MYFYRWYR PRIFYSGOL CAERDYDD. funny eh? uh, what else, theres a big castle here, but we were three minutes after the last tour and they wouldn't let us on, but we'll do it another day. The Big Story Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Those of you who’ve been keeping in touch with me over the phone already know the story of my little adventure. But for those of you who’ve neglected to call me, never fear - through the wonders of the internet, the details of the story can be yours! I should just mention before I begin that some of the themes are a little adult (or maybe just childish) but if you’re feeling prudish, you may as well read this entry another day, or after a strong drink. I thought about not including this story at all, or censoring it, but I [View Full Entry]

First Entry Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
First Entry: We arrived in England four days ago. We've been staying in the small town of Goudhurst. When people talk about small town England, they're not just talking about the number of people in the town, they're also refering to the diminutive size of all of the towns structures. It's hilarious, ducking your head to enter someone's house, or walking past a shop whose eavestroph only reaches to your shoulder. We've just arrived in Cardiff, Wales - the South-West side of the UK. It's very beautiful, and a university town to boot, so we'll be sure to have some fun [View Full Entry]
