Six Month Update... Ok, so we’ve been on the road for 6 months and thought we’d fill everyone in on some of the highlights and low points, because those happen too. Our adventure to date has been absolutely amazing and there isn’t a minute of it we would take back. We are loving our freedom and are so glad that we made the decision that we did…quit life and TRAVEL!!! If you have the same opportunity and are able to save some money, there isn’t anything better than being on the road. The people we have met, both locals and travelers, have been so incredible, the food delicious, the sights, smells and sounds unforgettable and the experiences are something we will take with us for a lifetime. Things we’ve learned: *Everything is relative. Relative in the ... read more

Kota Kinabalu Although there’s an option for you to get where you want to go in KK by taking a couple of different buses, it was pretty easy for us to decide on taking a taxi when we had another couple (who we had hung out with in Mulu) to split it with. At first, we were a little nervous that we were about to get screwed on accommodation since almost everything was booked up. However, Nate and Vega found a pretty good deal on an AC room at Summer Lodge in a main part of the city, close to many of the restaurants as well. It was nothing short of incredible to have AC for a few nights, and we were looking forward to getting a good, comfortable night sleep…unfortunately, that didn’t quite happen. Now, ... read more

After much deliberation over the past couple weeks, we finally decided that we would go to Gunung Mulu National Park since Jessie found a killer deal on a flight to get there. We were definitely on the smallest plane Nate has ever been on, but pleasantly surprising at the same time. Considering how insanely cheap our tickets were, we were shocked to be fed AND served something to drink on an hour and a half flight. As soon as you land, it’s pretty easy to tell that you’re in the middle of nowhere and there isn’t much going on outside of the park. Actually, the airport is just for the park, there is no other civilization for miles. The airport itself is also pretty basic, as well as the…um…taxis. If you don’t feel like walking to ... read more

We had to make it back to KL early in the morning to catch our flight to Kuching. The problem was, we left ourselves about 2 hours before our flight, which normally would have been plenty of time. But our bus didn’t show up to pick us up at the station until over an hour after it was scheduled to! There wasn’t anything we could do. We were stuck. It was one of the rare times we’ve been pretty stressed out while on our trip. Not to mention we had to figure out how we were getting to the airport once we got back to Kuala Lumpur…let’s just say our hearts weren’t the only thing that was racing when we made it to gate with 20 minutes to spare, whew! You won’t see us actually run ... read more

Back to the beach we go again! We woke up nice and early (surprise surprise), made our way to the LRT, and eventually to the bus station. There was definitely a little part of us that was going to miss KL. After all, as much as we love to be in the rural parts of the world, deep down…we are city people at home. It’s been an unfamiliar feeling to be so spoiled with the high quality of buses we’ve been on in Malaysia! Yet again, we were on a clean, comfy bus for our 5 hour ride to Mersing. Once we got there, we went to the main building in front to buy our ferry tickets to Tiomon. Of course, the man selling the tickets was trying to push us into staying at his guesthouse ... read more

We couldn’t help but feel a little sad leaving the Perhentians, even knowing it was time to move on with the rest of the trip. When we arrived back in Kuala Besut in the speedboat and were greeted by plenty of people asking where we were going. We asked one guy where the bus station was so we could quickly get our tickets for the 9am bus to Kuala Lumpur, and he told us to follow him. Now we’ve been burned plenty of times in the past so we were really hesitant to even follow him, and even when we did, we half expected him to try to charge us a commission fee for taking us to the station. Instead, he asked around every ticket counter for us until he found a bus that wasn’t sold ... read more

We hadn’t even been away from the water for 2 weeks, and we already couldn’t WAIT to get to the Perhentian Islands. We ended up booking our transportation through Banana since the other travel agencies used the same vans and they were already booked up. It cost us a little bit more, but we actually had the entire van to ourselves! We’ve never HAD so much leg room! After a couple of hours, we stopped at a gas station for a little bathroom break. Half asleep, we got out to stretch our legs and grab something to drink. Jessie was on the way to the bathroom when a man approached her. “Whaugooeee?” Jessie: “Huh?” “Whaaugoooee?” Jessie with an utterly confused look on her face. “Huh? Where am I going?” “No! Do you speak English? Whaaugooeee?” Nate ... read more

If you would have asked us where our first stop would be in Malaysia, for about 2 weeks would have told you we were going to Pulau Langkawi. It’s funny how the night before we left Koh Lanta, 8pm at night over dinner in fact, we randomly decided that we would go to Penang instead. How did we come to that decision? We flipped a coin and then played paper, rock, scissors. Haha, just kidding. Talk about making a last minute decision. We were planning on grabbing all local transportation to get to Penang, but things didn’t work out quite that way. Let’s back up just a bit though. We had ran into a couple while we were having dinner a couple times on Koh Lanta and said “hi”, but never too much more than that. ... read more

We had gone back and forth about stopping at Phi Phi due to everything we had heard and read about the prices of accommodation, food, well…everything really. But then again, when would we be in Thailand again? Who knows. So, after some deliberating, we decided to check it out for a couple of nights. With low season starting, we were able to get ferry tickets to Phi Phi for 300 baht each, which left at 8 am. It was a bit strange wading out into the water to get to the long tail that would take us out about 200 feet to the deeper water and unload everyone onto the ferry. No matter, it all worked out. The ferry ride to Phi Phi was just as straight forward as all the others. After all of our ... read more

Ko Pha Ngan So after a great time diving on Koh Tao, we were headed to Koh Pha Ngan a few days before the full moon party to make sure we could still get a decent deal on a room. Because it isn’t high season anymore in Thailand, we decided to take our chances with not pre-booking a room. When we arrived on the island after our ferry ride, we grabbed a taxi and made our way to an area we thought we would start at. One thing we DIDN’T count on was how incredibly hilly the roads were here. When we got dropped off, we quickly realized that there was no way in hell we would be walking too far to find a place to stay at unless we felt like passing out from walking ... read more
