Being the beach bums we are, there was just a little bit of excitement when we rolled up into San Juan del Sur. After a pretty painless bus ride down from Granada, we were baking in the sun in no time trying to find a place to crash, which wasn’t too difficult. It’s kind of nice being in small towns like this where everything is pretty close together so you don’t have to carry all your crap too far to scope out a few places to stay. The place we ended up at had free coffee and breakfast in the morning with some fairly comfortable beds in the dorms. It didn’t take us long to throw our stuff in the lockers and make our way to the beach in town. Unfortunately, it was nothing to write ... read more

Our first taste of Nicaragua was sitting on a corner in the middle of nowhere waiting for the next chicken bus to Leon. Our Tica bus was headed to Managua and this drop off point would help save us some time. We tossed around hitchhiking but before we got a chance to stick our thumbs out the bus came around the corner, off we went to Leon. We arrived just as it was getting dark, something we try to avoid and had to catch a cab to get ourselves into the center. Especially so soon after our little mishap, we weren’t about to stand around in the dark and try to find the bus to take us to the center. The cab was a few dollars well spent! Luckily, the place we were hoping to crash ... read more

As you can imagine, we were really looking forward to leaving Guatemala after the last few days, and all we could think about was being at the beach and sweating all day long. With that in mind, we were on the first shuttle to El Tunco in El Salvador with a friend we had met in school who had decided it was time to move on as well. Crossing into El Salvador may have been one the easiest border crossing we’ve ever done to date! We hardly had to do a thing, seriously. We didn’t even have to bring our big packs up to them to look over, they just let us right in (with no stamp L) with no questions asked. It was a pretty painless ride all the way to El Tunco. As soon ... read more

After cramming in as much Spanish as we could in 3 weeks, we were ready to go check out a new place and most likely take one more week there. Xela has a great reputation for having excellent schools, so we figured it would be a good place to stop for a week or so. We asked around at just about every travel agent in the town to find a decent price to get to Xela by shuttle. With everything we’ve heard about the “chicken buses”, we weren’t too keen on taking one. However, from SP to Xela is one of the safer routes and the bus we were going to take was direct. Plus it was only a 3 hour trip. To our surprise, there were quite a few tourists on the bus along with ... read more

The day had finally arrived. We were about to start Spanish school, a very distant thought not long ago for us. In order to move to our new place, we got up nice and early so we could still make it to school on time. For breakfast, we bought a couple of chocolate muffins from the panderia (bakery) right around the corner. We probably shouldn’t have done that ‘cause they were so delicious you didn’t want to stop eating them. And we all know Nate has a serious weakness for chocolate! We made our way down the steep hill and over to our new home for 4 hours a day. When we got there, everyone was having coffee and tea while socializing with the rest of the students. When 8:00am rolled around, we were still asleep ... read more

As the old saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun,” and that it does! It’s hard to believe we have been away for a year already, it feels like just a few months ago we were packing, moving and tying up loose ends to embark on the trip of a lifetime. We both agree that when you are out there experiencing new sights, sounds, smells and tastes the days may seem longer but the time goes by faster. While back at home, we could never understand how people could be gone for years and not get sick of it, not to mention each other! After walking a few days, or a whole 365 of them, in a traveler’s shoes we can now understand how easy it is to fall into the groove. We have fallen ... read more

It’s so hard to believe we’re already getting ready to pick a Spanish school. It seems like just yesterday Nate was eating bugs and Jessie was hanging on for dear life on a motorbike trip. We’ve met many people who tell us, “Wow! Two years? That’s a really long time.” We used to be like that. We used to think to ourselves, “How can people spend three years traveling and sometimes more?” Believe it or not, it goes by incredibly fast and the more you see, the more you WANT to see. We truly feel like you could spend an entire lifetime traveling and still not see everything there is to see. Keeping that in mind, we said goodbye to our new friends and packed into the already full shuttle that was making its way to ... read more

So with this post, we’re going to switch things up a little bit and begin with a New Year’s Eve adventure story. It goes a little something like this… Imagine, if you will, having a great time out with some friends while celebrating with TONS of locals in Antigua. Once 4 am rolls around, you decide to head back, with a couple other people, to the hostel you’re staying at for the night. You’re staying in a small dorm room with 4 beds in it and your bed is the first one in sight when you walk in the door. But, when you open the door thinking you’re about to crash for the night, you freeze with a confused, shocked, and slightly disgusted look on your face. You think to yourself, “You’ve got to be shittin’ ... read more

After our Christmas present of the Packers winning, we were setting off to Lanquin where we were thinking we would check out Semuc Champey and possibly a cave tour. We decided we might not want to press our luck to much with the chicken buses since we had heard about so many people being robbed on the open road and opted for a shuttle instead. Would be have been OK in the bus? Maybe, sure. Is it worth the risk for a couple of extra dollars? Not to us it isn’t, especially after we have already had to buy THREE cameras. As it was, we were already going to be getting in a bit late and without a reservation made. When we saw that there were 2 full shuttles heading there that day, we were immediately ... read more

Although Belize is obviously part of Central America, we were ready to explore a country that would be a happy medium between straight up ghetto and Disney Land for Americans. Now we didn’t give Belize a fair chance, we know, but we were ready to move on no matter. In our opinions, Guatemala was going to be our first real stop into Central America. Flores was first up, but first we had to get across the border. We had a leisurely breakfast and hopped on the 11am chicken bus bound for the border. We got dropped off an annoying 2km from the border and shared a taxi with a few other travelers. Normally, yes, we would walk it but was HOT and mid day so the couple bucks we spent was well worth it. Of course ... read more
