17th- 18th August 2007 Karthik and I have been in Nashville since 2004 (me from 2002) but this is the first time, my aunt and her family from CA visited us. We were very excited and looked forward to this trip a lot. My aunt and uncle, their kids and my maternal grandmother came on the 16th. Their trip is divided into three blogs- local Nashville stops and the Smoky Mountains, Rafting at Ocoee and a trip to the Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Nashville Stops As for any tourist visiting Nashville- we visited the usual spots- The parthenon and Opryland Hotel. These places impressed the Californians-which is something I'll say I'll let the pictures speak for themselves here. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park This is ... read more

July 22nd -28th 2007 For those of you who don’t know what I do in the USA, I am working on my PhD in Electrical Engineering at Vanderbilt University. I work as part of the Radiation Effects Group , the largest of its kind I think anywhere in the world. And when we found out about a year ago that our annual conference- The IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC) would be held at Honolulu, HI we became the envy of all that heard that news, not to mention the immense pressure to get a paper in! So long story short, I was one of the students who managed to get a paper in, and also one of the fortunate ones the department decided to fund. So this blog is about my official ... read more

May 26th 2007

May 5th to 12th 2007 Warning: This was a long one week road trip and will be quite a descriptive blog ... so don’t start it if you don’t have time or will be able to read it in parts, but hopefully you will all enjoy sharing our experiences. As with any long trip, the planning and anticipation was really fun for this one too. Our parents and in-laws were going to be in town and we wanted to go somewhere as a family that not only would be something we enjoy but would also be someplace they hadn’t been to before. Added to that we had Anitha- who wanted to go someplace exciting. So we picked Florida. And once that was done, we had to have an itinerary that would enable us to sight-see quite ... read more

May 26th 2007

April 21st 2007 Not much to say about this travel- as it was only within Nashville about 5 miles from our house. Nashville has a zoo and we have a monkey at home so we decided to go, Simple! This was on our list of things to see before we left Nashville so we decided to do it when my parents were there so they could have some fun too. And what a zoo it was without the king of the jungle, I am not kidding…there were no lions!! But there were cougars and we also saw their feeding, there were merkeet which were too cute, Bengal tigers, Giraffes, African Elephants, Monkeys and a petting area with sheep and a donkey, a bird house where you can feed these birds with nectar and if you are ... read more

March 31st 2007 I had heard a lot about the Cheekwood Gardens here in Nashville but never had the time to visit before. We all had planned to go this weekend but Karthik ended up having to stay behind due to school work. The weather forecast was really good (about 75 degrees fahrenheit) and he wanted us to carry on so we did, as there were only few more weekends left before our parents left back to India. Very important for this trip was the picnic lunch that we packed consisting of cucumber-mayo sandwiches, puli kachal (tamarind rice) and thalichi kotina thayyir satham (seasoned curd rice). yum yum yum We left at about 9:30 am reaching in 15 mins time. The entry fee was $5 with a student ID and $10 for adults. So once we ... read more

March 25th 2007

March 6th -11th 2007 So finally our bay area trip happened! We had multiple reasons to be excited about this trip- not only was it Prema chithi (aunt’s) son Upanaynam (Poonal) function that we were able to attend, my parents also were coming from India. Apart from that we had plans to meet some of our old friends, which I was really looking forward to. Anitha & I left for San Jose on March 6th and Karthik joined us on the 8th. I flew on United and Anitha on Southwest. After arriving at 1 pm, and a quick lunch…we went to the airport to pick up our parents who were arriving at 4 pm. It was great to see them after 1 and half years. They had a relatively uneventful flight and were glad to be ... read more

February 22nd 2007

February 4th-7th 2007 Okay…so after a busy two months, I got the chance to take a break. Though it was more of necessity , it turned out to be a beautiful trip…one where we sampled food in some awesome restaurants and also got to explore a little bit of British Columbia. The only sad part is that Karthik and Anitha could not accompany me Sriram and Saumitra, our neighbors and close friends in Nashville, TN came with me as they had to get their visas renewed too. Normally when you leave for a trip you end up doing research deciding where to go and what to sight see, in our case it was what documents to take and how to get to the Consulate and back. We really were not in a mind frame to ... read more

December 24th 2006

December 24th 2006 After staying in Nashville for 4 years we had still not seen the lights at Opryland during Christmas and New Year! So we decided to do it this year. This entry will not have anything for me to say except that the decorations were really beautiful and the hotel by itself is a breathtaking place. It is one of the most majestic hotels we have ever seen, with climate-controlled glass atriums, nine acres of lush indoor gardens, winding rivers and pathways, and sparkling waterfalls where one can unwind, explore, shop and dine. Highlights include a 44-foot waterfall, laser-light and fountain shows, and tours aboard Delta Flatboats - right inside the hotel. Other attractions around the hotel also include the The Mall... read more
