Well, this is it! I arrived last night, after a blowout night in Toronto, somehow managed to survive the last night of rumba with Lex and Zee, we went out to some vaguely hip-turning-yuppie establishment, me with my puto tshirt (why don't people appreciate the punkness of the idea?) and freezing cause I locked myself out of my hostel room (by moving, by tired mistake, into a room with a broken door, finally noticing it, and then fixing the door --- too well!), so no coat, no money (found that later), and most importantly, no energy left after carneval for partying. In the next few days, in dribs and drabs, I'll be posting up all the photos of the trip, by the date, so it will be necessary to scroll down to see all the photos ... read more

Just a taste of the most beautiful colonial town in the WORLD! Don't let anybody try to get you out of the city to visit the volcano, or the botanical garden, or any other silly nonsense...the best is just walking around and looking at all the cute funky cobbled streets and the well kept houses.... read more

Got off the boat in the winedark earlymorning, sleepy backpackers lounging around on the ground in front of the ship, waiting for their ship to come in, no doubt, since they were going upriver, my boat, another 8 hours downriver to iquitos.....we all jumped ship in this town called Nauta, which has this nifty invention called a 'paved highway', and so the eight hours of hammocky boat were reduced to 90 minutes.....well worth it, save for all the attendant destruction that an asphalt brings to the jungle.... Well, Iquitos was everything I thought it should be, I can understand now why Werner Herzog was so wowed by this as a location for Fitzcarraldo (which actually apparently happened in Puerto Maldonados, but probably not as scenic as here).... What we were probably looking at were scenes like ... read more

from Yurimaguas, on the Rio Marañon : Sorry there´s no photo this time, I forgot to bring along my connection cable. Lets begin with a description of today: A FANTASTIC sunrise as we rounded the very sharp foothills of the Andes, 1000 m knife edge karst formations at the very edge of the Amazon Basin. The Locals had all told me about the fantastic sunrises and sunsets, but I hadn´t quite believed them. The further 'out here' I get, the less reliable the information becomes. Yesterday in Tarapoto, I watched bands of young people beginning Carnaval a little early with ambushes of Water bomb balloons. Some people passing really got wet, but I timed it perfect and ran like a leopard and escaped all the bombs. Most people were trying to hurl them with such force ... read more
