The worst time in Hoa’s life was not when she caught polio at the age of two, or when she recently thought her husband might die because they could not afford a scan at the hospital. The worst experience she can remember, was receiving a letter many years ago - a letter that shattered her dreams. All her life, Hoa longed to become a teacher. For twelve years, she worked hard at school, striving to be top of her class. She passed her exams, graduated from high school, and finally applied. Hoa had to travel 45 kilometers from Hoi An to [View Full Entry]

I can't believe we've been in Hoi An for a over a week now. It's been fantastic - but frantic - and the weather is a sweltering 40 degrees! I'm sorry we've not yet had time to send you any emails or blog updates, but we've been trying to visit a group of 16 disabled people whom LifeStart is aiming to help with training etc. in order to make them self sufficient. Visiting them in their homes has been a tremendous, but humbling and at times emotional experience for us all. I hope to tell you more of their amazing [View Full Entry]

Thanks again to everyone who kindly ordered a scarf (or more!) from Hanh who was paralysed when a lorry drove into her as she was pushing her father's brick cart, 18 years ago. Hanh has been knitting away ever since we left and has completed all but 4 of the scarves! We will bring them all back with us on our return. I say "knitting" because that's what the Vietnamese call it - in fact we would know it as "crochet" but they have don't seem to have heard of that! Anyway the scarves look wonderful! Each one has taken [View Full Entry]

We left Melbourne at 8pm on the overnight boat to Davenport in North Tasmania, arriving at 7.00am the next morning. We hardly knew we were afloat - it was a smooth sailing on a modern ship, with comfy bunk beds. We all slept really well. Sam recommends it; “It was really good, the bunk beds were great fun - especially all the boys together in our own cabin.” Tasmania is just like a “Little Britian” - including the landscape, roads and weather, except for it is very sparsely populated (482,000).We didn’t see many vehicles at all on our 600km drive [View Full Entry]

Hi, my name is Michelle and, together with my partner Kevin, I’m spending a few days with our friends the Everson-Crane family. The family stayed with us while they were in Sydney and now we have the pleasure of exploring some of Marvelous Melbourne with them. This afternoon’s visit to the M/V Robert Hunter, which is moored at Docklands in Melbourne, has excited all of us - so much so that I insisted in adding my thoughts before Jake, Helena and Samuel to tell you something of the impact which our visit had on all of us. The M/V Robert [View Full Entry]

This blog is about Melbourne’s Moomba Festival. In this festival, there is a fair with exciting, wonderful and scary rides and also a marvelous parade with so many colourful costumes and lots of bright objects being carried! In this wonderful and bright parade, there were dancing girls in sparkly dresses, men dressed up in suits on stilts, a bright red dragon over 300 foot long and more amazing people in sparkling costumes!!! In the Moomba Fair there were rollercoasters and all the rides there would be in a Fair! This fair was on for one whole week and we went [View Full Entry]

On this trip around the world, we decided to stop in Whistler (Canada), where we’ve been snowboarding, skiing and climbing in just over a week! We have made some great new friends including the young adults who were teaching us. We were lucky because it snowed a lot on the mountains and was -9 degrees at the top, but was reasonably sunny at the bottom. We were also lucky because there was a free Telus Festival where they were giving away free stuff like Coke, Yop the yoghurt, McDonald Muffins, badges and more! In Whistler, I was learning snowboarding for [View Full Entry]

No photo can prepare you for the wonder of Machu Picchu! Machu Picchu is the mysterious lost city of the Incas…… Perched high amongst cloud forests in the Andean mountains, it was completely lost to the world for hundreds of years…... Nobody really knows why the Incas built Machu Picchu - or why they left! We do know that it was one of the few Inca citadels never to be discovered or destroyed by the Spanish Conquistadors. Whatsmore the quality of the Inca architecture and sophistiated craftsmanship, means that these Inca buildings have withstood earthquakes that [View Full Entry]

The first sight literally takes your breath away...
Imagine yourself back in the mysterious world of the Incas...
The Mystery of Machu Picchu!

"Wayna Picchu" is the name given to this mountain by the Incas. It means "Young Mountain". Well it may be young - but it's very steep! And it is high - I think it is twice as high as Snowdon! See the cool photos below! The path is a steep old inca trail and considered a hard climb even for grown ups! (SEE WARNING SIGN!) All this made us want to climb it even more! We all got up at 5.00 am! We caught the bus and zig zagged up to Machu Picchu. I didn't sit near the window as [View Full Entry]
