SIEM REAP - ANGKOR WAT DAY 1

Published: December 12th 2008Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap

28.11.08 Km travelled 19497 Cambodia has its own timing as well. The bus that was supposed to pick us up at 8.00 arrives at 8.45. The bus is a bit crappy but I like the driver and the roads in Cambodia are not very busy. With all the stops, the journey to Siem Reap takes six hours. I'm quite glad we got some food at the supermarket, because the place where we stop for lunch doesn't exactly look inviting. The road is pretty empty, apart from some fully packed vans decorated with people on top, and school kids on bicycles around the villages. Wherever we stop there are, instead, always a number of beggars and mutilated people hanging around the bus. As promised a guy from the Prince Mekong Villa is waiting for us at the ... read more

“Even in this 20th century, on Kampuchean soil the clique of Pol Pot criminals had committed a heinous genocidal act. They massacred the population with atrocity in a large scale, it was more cruel than the genocidal act committed by Hitler fascists. With the commemorative stupa in front of us, we imagine that we are hearing the grievous voice of the victims who were beaten by Pol Pot men with canes, bamboo stumps or heads of hoes, and of the ones who were stabbed with knives or swords. Imagining the horrifying scenes and the panic. Stricken faces of the people who were dying of starvation, forced labour or torture without mercy upon their skinny bodies. They died without giving the last words to their kith and kin. How much pain those victims were in when they ... read more

PHNOM PENH

25.11.08 Km travelled 19182 Time to go. Our visit to Vietnam for this time is at the end. It's not yet the time for me to express my thoughts on this experience, I'm still meditating. We leave quite early and the journey to Phnom Penh will take us seven hours. We meet other travellers, we get bored together waiting at the border, we set foot together for the first time in the Kingdom of Cambodia. They are a couple of Scottish, a kiwi ex pat girl, and a Swedish girl. It's always good to have some mates for a trip like this. I never put my mind into imagining how Cambodia would look like. My first impression of Cambodia doesn't differ in anything with the idea I've always had of India. Incredibly poor, terribly dirty, white ... read more

SAI GON - CU CHI TUNNELS

Published: December 5th 2008Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City

22.11.08 Km travelled 18822 It's raining so hard that I'm really glad we decided to leave this morning. As usual we have to wait a while for the bus to come. For us has been an incredibly long and boring day on the slowest bus ever in the world. We spent ridiculous money for a lunch we didn't order and didn't even finish, plus the bus wasted a lot of time in unjustified stops every hour. We'd been told it was going to take eight hours and it took twelve. But fortunately the landscape was very beautiful along the way and despite the rain, our arrival in Sai Gon has been the warmest we ever had. At Madam Cuc's hotel we're offered a seat, juice and fruit. We have a rest and then we check in. ... read more

NHA TRANG

19.11.08 Km travelled 18462 This morning we can finally take it easy. The train is at 10.45 so we have plenty of time. We wake up slowly, and relax, we we can lay in bed as long as we want. It rained heavily all night. When we are ready we go downstairs for breakfast and then we check out. It's not raining now so we can walk to the station. We ended up taking a bit of a long way around and when we reach the station it's raining again. Michael gives me a bit of a laugh slipping down the steps with his backpack on and many other bags in his hands, ending up twisting his arm. Should laugh really. Poor boy is in a lot of pain. We sit in the waiting room with ... read more

17.11.08 Km travelled 17982 We've been sleeping almost all night. It means it wasn't that bad at the end. When I open my eyes we're still one hour from Hué. We're all still half asleep. When the bus parks, in a place that looked like anything apart from a bus station, we grab our bags and get off. A young guy wearing an helmet is holding a sign with my name and the one of the hotel. I wave at him and he helps us picking up our stuff and put it on a van. We jump on and in few minutes we're at the hotel. We are shown a spacious room with two double beds for 15$. It's perfect. We settle in. we can have a shower and get ready. It would be nice to ... read more

NINH BINH - TAM COC

Published: November 23rd 2008Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Ninh Binh

16.11.08 Km travelled 17402 We look outside the window from the height of our room but there's not much to see. A curtain of fog is hanging outside. Still is our only day here so we will try to make the most out of it. We have breakfast at the hotel to make it easy. We also have to leave all our stuff at the hotel as tonight we're leaving. As soon as we're ready we meet our drivers, Dai and Go. This hotel is apparently famous for its safe drivers, so we're keen to try. We jump on the scooters and start our way through the streets of Ninh Binh. Not that Ninh Binh has many roads; it is actually unfolding mainly on the sides of one street. So we're soon in the countryside. Our ... read more

HA LONG BAY CRUISE

Published: November 21st 2008Asia » Vietnam » Northeast » Quang Ninh » Halong Bay

14.11.08 Km travelled 17252 The start of the day hasn't been very fortunate. But you can't always tell the day from its start. We woke up very early to have some breakfast and make to sure to be ready to leave by 8.00. The breakfast room was very busy and we had to wait to be served. Obviously we wouldn't have rushed if we knew that then we would have had to wait more than half an hour for the bus to come and pick us up. I was already getting quite nervous, as we knew that to get to Ha Long it was going to take us at least three and half hours. When we found ourselves on the edge of desperation the guy that had to pick us up stepped into the hotel. We ... read more

HA NOI - PERFUME PAGODA

Published: November 20th 2008Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi

13.11.08 Km travelled 17082 Ha Noi is a very nice place, but having decided to spend one more day here we thought it was worth getting out and see something else. The choice has been then a trip to the Perfume Pagoda. We've been picked up in the morning at our hotel and joined a group of people already packed in the van. Half of the group was a family, I think from France/Martinique, parents, two kids, and two grandparents. As for the rest of us, it was a big mix. A French girl on a short trip between Ha Noi and Bangkok, an American lady on the same route, a Danish girl living in Ha Noi for ten months, a German guy travelling for four weeks in Vietnam. It's been a beautiful journey. After a ... read more

2.11.08 We woke up early this morning, with the only purpose of going to see Ho Chi Minh. The ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex closes at 11.00, so if you plan a visit you' ll need to be there early. We weren't actually planning to visit the whole complex, but still, we wanted to walk there, which took us some time. The third (or fourth including Stalin, even if you can't actually see him) embalmed communist hero on our way, we really couldn't miss it. Considering the fact that, with all respect that Vietnamese people have for him, he as well didn't want to be embalmed. We walked around the complex area fenced by guards to keep people at a distance. We got to a point south where it seemed like you could pass, but there ... read more
