The Travellin Willies

Scott, Paula, Chels & Brent

Well laptops and leg injuries can lead to internet adventures in themselves! Didn't know that such things as "Travel Blogs" even existed - I must have lived a sheltered life maybe.... Anyway, it's inspired me to keep a blog of our Thailand Adventure. Hopefully, we'll keep you posted of all the ups & downs & in's & outs & scam's & rip-off's we've been involved in along the way - which goes without saying really!! Anyway "Travellin Willies" will be heading to Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, & koh Jum Islands for plenty of R&R and fighting over whose turn it is in the hammock, tasty tidbits to sample (or we think so), and then onto Krabi town for a night before heading by cattle class plane and 2nd class train up North to Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai will see us visit a few temples, a few massages, Elephant Parks, the Chiang Mai Zoo, and a visit to the Dentist too! From there well plane it back to Bangkok - where no doubt "it's time to SHOP!! Then .... who know's ... its a mystery tour for the last 6 days of our adventure.

I hope you enjoy our blog - if not, let me know and I'll try to spice it up a bit for you. Cheers ... and till we meet again.....

Wednesday 6 July Okay…. Sae Daeng here we come.. Rode the back of the cab style ute with the new oven, about 4 large gas cylinders, 4 backpacks and 4 tired souls to our New Heaven Hut, on Sae Daeng Beach. BUT..... before navigating the rugged mountainous terrain along deeply concaved tracks, holding onto anything in the ute to stop us and our belongings from falling out backwards! No OH&S standards here!! After about 10 minutes he decides to to a 3 point turn and head down the treacherous steep hill in Reverse Gear that even Montgomery homes would struggle to build on!! That’s what I love about Asia – just never sure what type of experience you are going to get! You don’t need a theme park in Thailand to be a thrill seeker! Nevertheless, ... read more

Arrival time around 8.00 am and as it was Election Day it was free travel on the BTS train lines! Just what we wanted! Probably saved us about 350 bt which in actual fact was only about $11.00. But if you know me well.... you know I love a bargain! Hopped it straight from Hulalomphong to Sukhumvit and navigated the streets with turtle backs to Soi 15 Kingston Suites for a quick shower, breakie and hightail it via metro line to the Chuck u Chuck (sp how it sounds!) Sunday markets, for serious shoppers only, being biggest in Sth East Asia – probably only covered 10% of it if we were lucky, and even with a map seemed we went round & round in circles aimlessly. looking tirelessly for Blue or green vans for our lovely ... read more

Day 12 – 2nd July to 3 July 2011 Well all good things must come to end and we said bye to Pai, Panda, Run and Orn. This place was so truly amazing and I’m certain to return. Will have to make the next travelling expedition with a cross over from Lao or Cambodia just to come here again. Orn gave us a beautiful departing gift which had been beautifully wrapped in a banana leaf and topped with a purple flower – turned out it was a handmade bag which she had sewn – which has been claimed as Scott’s new library bag, and inside were some packets of her home made tea of different varieties. We took the AYA bus at 8.00 am back to Chiang Mai left our packs at the train station and ... read more

Day 11 – 1 July Once again, we are mesmerized by our hosts Run and Orn and our slice of heaven accommodation. Undoubtedly one of the most unique experiences we have ever had. So picturesque and the attention to detail is just so overwhelming. It’s so hard leaving this place to venture out and explore, but we do anyway. This time, we pushed on to the WWII bridge, before leaving our run too late again – our sleep in’s mean that we have to take on the monsoon mid day storm that seems to occur daily! We buttoned up the ponchos and rode onto the Pai Canyon where we took shelter for 45 minutes talking War stories whilst awaiting the rains to subside. We then headed into town for a lunch at Anido’s pizza parlour of ... read more

Day 10 – 30 June We woke up bow legged & bandy big time!! Though after a scrumptious breakie prepared by Orn of homemade muesli using 35 ingredients, homemade yoghurt and Fruit, and home grown tea, we headed for the hot springs for a soak to soothe the elephantitis. Our next stop was heading to the Pai Canyan and WWII bridge, but the monsoon rains came pelting down and we got soaked to the core riding home for reprieve! It was a case of first in best dressed for the hammocks and the loser scored the comfy lounge chair Thai style anyway. We later ventured back out heading to the Lisu village. ... read more

Day 9 – 29 June We got the hardcore bikie gang onto our 140cc scooters and tore off down the road at snail pace. Little did I know I was soon to contract elephantitis ouch! We landed at a place called Thom’s where they had four wonderful elephants. We scrambled, and heaved ourselves onto the bare backs of these monstrous creatures. Chelsea & Scott’s elephant was even larger than ours and called Tamtoo and Brent’s and mine was called Pempam. After 1 ½ hours ride through jungle we hit the river for some serious wrestles elephant style. They were rebellious, unruly, rowdy, & boisterous, soaking us, trunk style and tossing us into the festy flowing river which undoubtedly was full of elephant defecation! On the way back, we swapped elephants. Scott had been complaining of the ... read more

Day 8 - 28 JUNE We got into Pai last night. Run and Orn were our wonderful hosts at Bueng Pai Farm, a little slice of heaven. We had fishing from our front porch. The serenity and tranquility was a welcome relief. The food they made was soo fresh with homemade yogurt and lots of fresh fruit grown on the farm. Paula and the kids made a special four legged friend there called Panda. We hired a couple of motor scooters and terrorized the neighbourhood doing 40 kms tops. The roads were uncrowded so it was fun just cruising. We scootered past a little restaurant called Na’s Kitchen which had mouth watering aromas emanating from its woks. So we frequented here a few times. In the morning we rented two rods from Run and Brent and ... read more

Day 5, 6 & 7 Woke up late after getting in to our hotel at 11pm. Paula and Brent had a dentist appointment at 9am. Caught a seongtiaw (ute with seats in the back) to the train station to pick up our tickets for Bangkok and Chumpoon next week. Stopped at an electronics store on the way back and Paula bought me a new Samsung mobile phone for 488 baht. A man must be contactable at all times even on holiday. The rains came bucketing down – Scott & Brent took a tuk tuk home from Phantip plaza, but a minor problem with the throttle – (it came off!) meant a transfer to a songeteow. They stopped off for a quick purchase of an umbrella for 100 bt. We all reunited unexpectedly at the 7-11 near ... read more

Day 4 Slept in and slothed on down to breakfast at 9. Brent and I took the scooter down to do a surf a check. The wind and swell was up with 4’ to 5’ sets of slopfest happening. I couldn’t wait to get out there. I had a couple of big mushburgers and duckdived 3000 waves. The tiger in my tank was growling after the relentless duckdiving and had an 11oclock shopping spree appointment scheduled. Rubber time always applies in the tropics so at 11.15 thought I better head in and check in with the rest of the crew. Met Paula and Brent on the beach and walked the 10 minutes back to the room. We saddled up our trusty steads and headed over the hills into Patong for some more shopping. The Van's store ... read more

Day 3 We were up early again so we could get the jump on the brecky buffet. Fuel for the action packed day ahead or just morning gluttony? The Tiger I had wrestled with the night before had left me a little seedy but a dip in the briny would clear the head I was sure. So it was off to the beach for some more sloppy surf in the bath water. The swell was holding at 3ft with the odd bigger one coming through. The kids struggled getting out through the break as it was at times relentless. Brent borrowed a 7’2’’ mini mal off a local board rental guy named Dum. Paula had brokered a deal to leave our $30 garage sale 7’ board with Dum in exchange for him lending us a board. ... read more
